Sounds like an unnecessary discharge of a fire arm IMHO. They definitely had other options.

Clear the park.

A fire hose.

An animal taser.

Leave it alone and let it go home.

How about this one:

The stupid people in the area should stop feeding the bears.

I am NOT ripping in you for posting this Hugh, but the La Crosse bear situation was a complete cluster F#$K in the way it was handled by the police and DNR.
If I shot 3 rounds for every bear, wolf or coyoteI saw, my ammuntion costs would be higher than my business insurance costs annually!

Now this would be a different situation if a bear was charging me (which has never happened to me yet) and I felt threatened by the bear. Most of the time they will turn and run when our paths cross.

Oh sure it was. But I just think the hypocrisy is evident. The same law enforcement that claims we don't need a gun turns around and says they "had" to shoot the bear for the safety of others. Can't have it both ways.

MOUNT PLEASANT

Three robbed at gunpoint

Three men told Mount Pleasant police they were robbed by a man with a gun June 17 just after 1 a.m. in the 2100 block of Racine Street.

Reports said the men were coming home from dropping a relative off at another house. After getting out of the car, they began walking up the porch steps to their residence.

Police said an armed suspect approached them and demanded money. Two of the men handed over their wallets, which contained a combined total of $210.

The suspect then fled with a second suspect, who had waiting on the sidewalk, according to reports.

Both suspects were described as black men, about 19-20 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall, with thin builds and shaved heads. Both were wearing black hoodies at the time of the robbery.

POLICE REPORTS: June 26 Friday, June 26, 2009 9:45 PM CDT

RACINE

Man assaulted during robbery attempt

A 38-year-old man told Racine police he was attacked by two suspects attempting to rob him in the 1100 block of Villa Street Monday.

According to reports, the man said he had been watching a baseball game at a friend’s house and began walking home when he was confronted by the suspects. He told police the suspects demanded his wallet, punched him in the stomach and then repeatedly struck him in the head with his own cane, while they went through his pockets.

The victim said he lost consciousness, woke up and went home. On Tuesday, police said the victim went to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Officers were called to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints, 3801 Spring St. just before 6 p.m. They took the report from the victim, but noted that there had been no Brewers baseball game on TV Monday and that the man seemed disoriented.

RACINE

Woman loses teeth in assault

A 31-year-old woman was the victim of an aggravated assault Saturday night around 11:35 p.m., according to police reports.

The woman was walking home in the 1400 block of 12th Street when an unknown man attacked her from behind and hit her in the face with an unknown object, police reports said.

The victim suffered a cut to her lower lip, lost four teeth and damaged an additional tooth, the report said.

RACINE

Five charged with North Beach assault

Five men were charged Tuesday with battery and disorderly conduct for allegedly beating, kicking and hitting a man with beer bottles at North Beach on Sunday.

Gabino Mondragon Trinidad, 28, of 4217 Durand Ave.; Jose Trinidad, 26, Miguel Trinidad-Delacruz, 20, Modesto Trinidad, 22, all of 6001 Joanne Drive; and Nicolas Trinidad, 35, of 2225 Layard Ave., have all been charged with using a dangerous weapon to cause bodily harm in a public place. Mondragon Trinidad has also been charged with obstructing a police officer by giving false information.

An officer patrolling North Beach on Sunday was alerted to a group of males beating a man within the park. When the officer arrived, the 26-year-old victim was covered in blood, according to the police report.

The suspects threw beer bottles at the victim until he fell to the ground, and then began kicking him viciously, in front of at least 75 people at the park, according to a witness in the police report.

Nicolas Trinidad reportedly threatened to kill the victim if he told the police what happened, the victim said.

Once at the jail, the patrol officer noticed that Jose Trinidad had fresh blood on his pants. “I kicked his (butt), so what?” Jose Trinidad said, according to the police report. “We all kicked his (butt). We don’t care.”

Vilas County July 1,2009

Yep, no need for a gun in Wisconsin (read - sarcasm). Some idiot from Rockford, IL killed his wife. Don't know where it happened but he seemed to feel the northwoods was a good place to escape. His car was found this afternoon up in the Boulder Junction area and later he was apprehended.

This is vacationland up here where many leave doors unlocked and keys in cars. Sure it's much better and safer than other areas BUT the point is bad things happen and as many others have said, we are the ones responsible for our own safety. I think of the many scenarios that could have played out if he hadn't been caught. I like to think I'd be prepared should some nutcase decided to elude police at my expense.

Man shot after leaving nightclub dies
By Sharif Durhams of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: July 2, 2009 11:50 a.m.

A 22-year-old Milwaukee driver died Wednesday night after being shot in the head while leaving a club early Wednesday.

The man was driving with two passengers just after 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 2500 block of N. Teutonia Ave. when someone shot at least twice into the vehicle, according to the Milwaukee Police Department. Police department spokeswoman Anne E. Schwartz didn't name the club, but said those in the vehicle apparently had some kind of altercation when they were there.

The vehicle's passengers weren't injured, Schwartz said. One of the passengers steered the vehicle until it stalled out several blocks away, police said.

Police said they don't know the identity of the shooter.
Hmm, and in a school-zone. I thought that would be impossible, considering there are laws in place that prevent people from carrying firearms in or within 1,000 feet of a school. :banghead:

A rash of close calls with bears has some on edge heading into this busy outdoor weekend.

if (self['plpm'] && plpm['Mid-Story Ad']) document.write('');if (self['plpm'] && plpm['Mid-Story Ad']){ document.write(plpm['Mid-Story Ad']);} else { if(self['plurp'] && plurp['97']){} else {document.write(''); } }if (self['plpm'] && plpm['Mid-Story Ad']) document.write('');

For both a pregnant woman and 15-year-old boy in our area the encounters were too close for comfort.

Kelly Wiltrout still wears the evidence of her attack. A simple trip to the trash can outside her Siren, Wisconsin home quickly turned into a fight for survival for her and her unborn child when she came face to face with a bear.

Wiltrout says, "I took one hit to the face, one more to the face and shoulder and then it kept it's paw on me."

Clearly these bears haven't gotten Jim Doyles memo. He "can't think of a reason why you'd want to carry a gun in Wisconsin" Well Jim...

The news does not cover how many times animals run through a city or town. Look how many times there are Deer inside the city limits. Deer are timid animals, so if they are willing to come into town so will the Bear, Coyote, Wolf and yes even Cougar.

Find it hard to believe? Do a search on it and you will be amazed and maybe even terrified.

Even stranger, the fact that so many people carry a Knife on their belt. Now, While I support their right to self defense and their right to carry that knife; I just can not help but think of that old adage don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

In this day and age, you do not hear of many people getting robbed at knife point, and I sure don't see anyone stabbing a bear, wolf, coyote, or cougar with a knife and coming away unharmed if not dead.

Now what I find extremely funny is the fact that so many people will carry a cigarette lighter holder, a cigarette pack holder, a dip can holder or even a cell phone on their belt; all of which are either proven or thought to cause you harm, but they don't see the need to carry a gun for protection.

Maybe when we are out OCing and we see one of these people we should go up and say to them, " Excuse me sir, I was wondering why you carry that cigarette lighter on your belt. You don't intend to use that here do you? Because I am here shopping with my family and it really makes me nervous that you may start a fire in the store." Time to initiate the MWAL call.

Just wait til the state wide smoking ban come into effect. The cops won't be getting MWAG calls they will be getting MWAC calls.

The man with the dip can on his belt..." Excuse me sir, You aren't planning to spit on the sidewalk here are you? Because I walk through here sometimes carrying my son and I could slip on that and fall causing harm to myself or even worse my child."
Initiate MWAD call...ha ha couldn't resist, sorry!

But seriously, if you would carry all of that then tell me this, Why not carry a gun? At least the gun is for safety and protection, the others really won't help you much in this day and age.

And finally, If fire arms cannot be lawfully carried in a vehicle the cell phones shouldn't either. After all most people talk on them while they are driving and this can cause an accident and maybe even death. Hence the MWACP call

Any criminal knows that any law abiding person has been disarmed inside Miller Park. It is easy prey, in the rush of people leaving the park...a cop is not likely to witness anything.

Gang member gets life sentence in Good Samaritan killing By John Diedrich of the Journal Sentinel July 10, 2009 | Like the Good Samaritan, Kevin Hirschfield stopped to help a stranger. But unlike the biblical character, Hirschfield died for his good deed.
The 26-year-old Oak Creek man was gunned down outside a Cudahy gas station in 2003 after he stopped to help a man being beaten by what turned out to be members of the Latin Kings. The gang's leader ordered Hirschfield killed. Three subordinates obliged, pumping 12 bullets into Hirschfield.
One of the shooters, Emmanuel "TuTu" Martinez, was sentenced Friday to life in federal prison. Besides killing Hirschfield, Martinez shot a rival gang member in the head. That man survived. Martinez admitted to shooting Hirschfield and the rival gang member.
More than 30 members of Hirschfield's family and Martinez's family filled the courtroom Friday.
"You took my brother without hesitation and without sorrow," said Hirschfield's sister, Stephanie Mackey. "There is no reason why you do what you do and no excuse. You disgust me." »Read Full Article
