Man, 67, critically hurt after Falls home invasion
By Linda Spice of the Journal Sentinel

Posted: July 14, 2009 8:44 a.m.

A 67-year-old man beaten before burglars ransacked his Menomonee Falls home remained in critical condition Tuesday morning with multiple injuries, according to police.

The initial investigation into the case showed a home invasion and armed robbery occurred some time after 11 p.m. at the home on Evergreen Lane. Menomonee Falls police believe the victims were targeted and said the case was not a random act of violence, according to information released Tuesday morning.

At least one suspect was armed with a handgun when the 67-year-old victim woke up and confronted the burglars. He was attacked and beaten before all of the occupants inside the home were tied up, according to police. No other family members were injured.

The burglars then stole several items from the home and then left in an unknown vehicle, according to police.

Once the burglars were gone, one resident was able to free herself and call police.

Residents are asked to report any suspicious vehicles or people they might see in their neighborhoods.

The investigation into the case is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call police at (262) 532-8700.
But Menomonee Falls is such a nice suburban area? You don't need a gun in the suburbs do you????????

Need a gun for protection? Come on!!! That's what we have 911 and the police for. It was their mistake for not making the call much earlier, like before any of this started.

After all, 911 works so well in Madison...

WOW...... I had no idea Racine was such a dangerous place. My wife and I were there last Oct. We were visiting Kenosha like we do every year or two. Also there for my sisters funeral in another town close by. We stayed at the Merriott and in the evening went to The SteakHouse for dinner. Got there about 6:30 PM. There was a cop on duty in the parking lot in back. I parked right next the cop and jokingly thanked him for saving me a parking place. He seemed to be a pretty good guy. What he didnt know was my Taurus 38 Spec. was on the front drivers side floor of my SUV. We went in to the Bar and each had three drinks before and during dinner. Im a Martini man and have been drinking that crap for years so I can really handle them.;) When we left I got lost trying to go back west on Washington because of the oneway streets and I think some construction. Now that I think about it we might have been in a lot of danger! Its too bad but I just cant see going back again until Wisc. honors my CC permit. When and if that happens I wont be drinking my three and carrying into the bar but willCC when driving away.

Well, I can't get any links to work but google Akron hate crime or the video on You Tube and while it's Ohio, I could see this happening in Milwaukee or Racine. Surprised this wasn't posted in the Ohio group.

geoff
I think if we are gona make a new law, we should demand that "punks" call 911 just before any given crime. This way, if they hurt anyone, the ambulance will be on the way...

How about this, twice in the lasttwo or so week’s police were unable to apprehend armed suspects.

1[suP]st[/suP] in Mequon @ two weeks ago, a bank robbery suspect disappeared into the “woods” behind the bank, police reversed 911 everyone in the area and told them to lock there houses!

2[suP]nd[/suP] yesterday, police failed to catch a armed robber after a high speed chase that started in Fox Point and ended in Whitefish Bay. The robber ditched his car, after the police spiked the tires, andvanished into the neighborhood.

I moved from a nice up-scale suburban town not far enough from I-95. One early AM, about 0330, I woke to the sound of big engines idling at high speed. On investigating, armed, I found my cul-de-sac full of fire rigs and the adjacent one full of hazmat step-off areas and blowers - and my Chief of Police, Roddy Perry, RIP.

He explained that they were cleaning a meth cooker's house. Not a dozen paces from my door and just out of sight around the corner of a neighbor's house. He admonished me for not being "a good and nosy neighbor".

I became a good neighbor and got to know every one near by. I became HOA president. I made sure that I was always obviously armed. The owner of the cookery was not jailed and harassed the little old lady neighbors. I harassed him back.

Doug, Your story brings up a valid point that applies to the northwoods, and almost any ruralarea of WI.
Several locallaw enforcement departments are warning about meth labs in the woods, and what to look for and how to react if you suspect finding one. (propane tanks with green discolored valves, Lye containers & such laying around and a strong chemical smell)
Apparentlyseveral Meth-cooks have been setting up shop out in the forest lands up here ( Lincoln County has earned the title of "meth capitol of the state" ) But at the same time we have the WIDNR wanting to cite people for hunting out of season or hunting with no license for carrying a firearm in the woods.

And then we have McNaughton Correctional facility (very low security) just down the road, and they have a work release program where several local business's hire inmates to do grunt work for very little pay. Only a few inmates have escaped in the past years while on work release, but I still feel it is a big enough threat if a desperate convict wants to part ways with the system for me to carry in this sleepy little town.
But we still have several peoplewhoask "why do you think youneed a gun up here to protect yourself?"

Edited for spelling corrections, I have a sticky "F" key on my keyboard.

I agree, the small town governments in this state all seem to think that there are no serious threats to the general occupation. The truth is they really do not want you to know just how many threats there are because then you might feel you need to exercise your rights and protect yourself.

As far as those minimum institutions go the state seems to think there is no need for concern with these guys yet they still keep them in prison. If they are not a danger to society then let them go so we can worry about those who are.

It isn't just the "small town governments." It's the general public, and their "it can't happen here" attitude. That is why people/employees complain at some places we carry, and why we have all these FUBAR gun laws in Wisconsin, because in their FEARFUL mind, "there is no need for us to carry." If we really need to carry, then they must admit their little piece of the earth isn't the dreamland utopia they think it is. I would love to have to NEVER CARRY a firearm, but that is NOT the world we live in.

I think the risk in small towns isn't street thugs and gangs, its drug producers (meth, pot), to some extent wild animals, and may I also mention a few Barney Fifes. then there are the crazy people who live anywhere, and they can be in a large town or a small town.

So yes, you should carry when in a large town or a small town. You are simply trading risks for another.

Picking 2 fights at the same time may not be the best way to get a point across. Educating the public by carrying open is tainted when you butt heads with the local LEOs. Don't forget that we need to educate them also....;)

Refusing to show ID on the grounds that "you don't have to" is not the wayto remain on the good side of the police whos job it is to respondwhen someone calls about a man with a gun. Cooperate with them and they will be more likely to cooperate with us. EVERYTHING is political. We need to work smart not hard....

Shopkeeper, 77, shot dead in northwest side robbery attempt
By Jesse Garza of the Journal Sentinel

Jeffrey Phelps
Milwaukee police investigate the death of a 77-year-old shopkeeper Wednesday in the 8300 block of W. Silver Spring Drive. Witnesses reported seeing a man running south from the store after the shooting.

A 77-year-old shopkeeper who sold candy and other snacks at a store on Milwaukee's northwest side and was known to neighborhood children as "Grandpa" was shot to death during a robbery attempt Wednesday evening.

The shooting was reported at 5:25 p.m. at the Silver Spring Variety Store, 8305 W. Silver Spring Drive, Milwaukee police Deputy Inspector Gregory Thompson said at the scene.

According to Thompson, paramedics found the man with a gunshot wound to the chest. Their attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing a man running south from the store after the shooting. Police were searching for the man Wednesday evening, Thompson said.

Marcia Goins, 49, said her mother operates a small business that shares space with the victim's store. Goins' mother, 79, sells Avon products and T-shirts, and the victim sold candy, soda and other items, Goins said.

According to Goins, her mother called her to report that the store owner had been shot.

Goins said her mother saw that the door to the victim's store was ajar and heard a man demanding money. The mother then heard the victim order someone out of his store before she heard gunfire.

A yellow tarp covering the victim's body could be seen on the parking lot in front of the business Wednesday evening.

Goins said that on good days, the victim might sell only about $40 worth of merchandise.

"He was just the kindest old man in the whole world," Goins said. "All he wanted to do was sell candy."

Goins said the victim was retired and operated the store for more than 10 years. He and Goins' mother also sold items at area flea markets, Goins said.

"It's a sad day for the city of Milwaukee for something like this to happen to one of the kindest old men you could know," Goins said.

Farrah Walker, 32, found the store blocked off with yellow police tape when she arrived to buy candy with her two young children less than an hour after the shooting.

"I thought, 'I hope it's not him,' " Walker said.

She said the store was a popular spot for neighborhood children, who often dumped change on the counter before pointing out the items they wanted, and receiving free popcorn, too.

"If you didn't have enough money for what you needed, he'd tell you to catch him the next time," Walker said.

He was patient with young children and respectful toward neighborhood teenagers, who got along with him, Walker said.

"He was, like, the nicest person you could ever know," Walker said. "For him to stay here as long as he did, he was really dedicated to the neighborhood."

While Walker spoke, her 5-year-old daughter hopped up and down, telling her mother she wanted candy.

"We can't get candy anymore, sweetheart," Walker told her daughter. "Grandpa's in heaven now."

Ryan Haggerty of the Journal Sentinel staff contributed to this report.
My gf and her brothers were good friends with one of his sons. He barely made much money at the store and got along with people in the neighborhood, even the teenagers. I'll never get my head wrapped around why people do these kinds of things :banghead:.

June 30. two men shot in Betroit. One dead, one injured. July 18. 17 year old girl shot in "the hood" in critical condition. Betroit population about 35,000. Our district Senator is an ex nurse, our state Rep is a physician. Both are extremely anti gun.
