Open Carry Meet up Hampton Roads

Would there be any interest in meeting up at the Longhorn Steakhouse that just opened up in Newport News (on Jefferson Ave). I get home next week and was hoping to do a dinner on Saturday or Sunday (11 or 12 May).

Throw out some times that would work and we go with majority rules. Weekends are pretty much good for me until I get back on flight.

Looking forward to meeting up!

I would be interested but only Sunday would partially work for me. I work until 6 but could come up and meet folks as they finish up their meal (it would take me until 7 to get there.)

The Va-Alerts are a great way to keep current on what is happening through the Commonwealth.

I have searched but to no avail (so far) - what is VA-Alerts?

Va-Alerts are the free (generally weekly) VCDL (Virginia Citizens Defense League) email alerts with news from around the Commonwealth on incidents, events, changes in the law, court cases pertaining to your right to defend yourself.

They are free & we never sell, rent or give away your email address.

You can sign up on the VCDL home page, far right hand side, midway down.

VCDL is the largest, most effective gun rights group in the state of Virginia.
We educate, we lobby, we defend your right to defend yourself.

VA-Alert is an email notification system provided by VCDL. They will send out emails containing topics of interest to gun owners.... mostly as it relates to Virginia. Its a great resource to help people stay up to date on gun rights issues, and some of the on-going's within the state.

The Alerts are free, and do not require VCDL membership to receive (although becoming a member does help give VCDL the resources it needs to protect our rights).

You (or anyone else...) can sign up for the VA-Alerts here: http://www.vcdl.org/va-alert

Edit: Wow, apparently some of you guys type much faster than I do!! lol

Posting response time (PRT) is the result of correlation of reading time and type setting ability + carriage return function.

However such acuity is not indicative of any greater value - we each offer our own interpolations based upon our personal limitations.

Yeah, there's hardly a day that goes by that I don't pat myself on the back for having taken a typing class as an elective way back in high school....my best friend and I took it because we were the only two guys in a class of about 30 girls, great for getting dates. Who knew how not having to hunt and peck would be key to quick responses on a forum some day. And same for learning to type on first a Remington, and then woo-hoo, the big time -- IBM Selectric! Learning to type on those things sure make what we do today seem like a piece of cake!

OC-ed to Food Lion, Tropical Smoothie and Exxon for a lottery retirement investment. No issues.

Coming out of Food Lion I let a pick up truck cut in front of me from 7-11 and the guy waved to say thank you AND had a "Guns Save Lives" VCDL bumper sticker on the back. Just goes to show you that gun owners are polite. :)

I just read a good article referring to John Lott's research on concealed carry laws and its affect on crime. http://www.humanevents.com/2013/05/01/coulter-americas-most-feared-economist/

Okay, on my way in to job #2 I stopped by and spoke to the range folks at superior Pawn and gun on Va Bch Blvd. The answer is "it depends". If you are Concealed Carrying, well then they won't ask you to unload because they don't know you are carrying.

There were three guys working the counter and the answers to the questions varied. We read the sign together and 2 out of 3 believe the store is seperate from the range. One guy (one who the store is the range especially on saturday morning) will always ask folks to unload. THe others not so much. A lot depends on how you carry yourself. If you are behaving responsible you have a 50/50 chance of not being hassled.

Now, for the rest of the story. All three guys were able to relate numerous instances where folks just do dumb things which led to the "for everyone's safety" mentality. Numerous times, folks walk up to the counter, plop their loaded firearm down on the counter pointing at the staff and say "I want to shoot this here". Others come in looking for a holster, and begin trying out various holsters with a fully loaded gun, including practice draws.

So, yes they want you to unload in your car before you come inside. If you don't, will you be hasseled? Maybe, depends on the person that see you and how many times they have had people be stupid during the earlier part of their day. One thing is pretty clear, if it leaves your holster it needs to be unloaded BEFORE you walk through the door. These guys deal with gun owners and wanna be's every day and can tell pretty quick who is responsible and who is a buckeroo.

To complicate things more, you might get asked to unload even if you have been going in every day for a week with no hassle because unbeknownst to you, they clerk had to ask the yahoo standing 5 feet down the counter to do so not more than 3 minutes before you walked in the door and if they don't ask you the guy is going to raise a stink. Food for thought... sometimes it is not just about us.

Follow Up: So I wanted to test fire some various self defense rounds in my gun (an "inexpensive" 9mm which can = unreliable/picky but has been rock solid) and the superior range on Va Beach Blvd was the only place I could get to in the amount of time I had available that lets you shoot those rounds. So I park, get out of my car with my weapon on my side, open my truck, carefully making sure no one can see me branishing my weapon, unholster my gun, remove the mag and the chambered round and put the ammo in my range bag. Reholster and go up to the range. I still have my spare mag hanging from my belt on my weak side. Go up and wait my turn to checkin on the range, back against the wall, facing all the employees. (i.e. they could not tell if my weapon was loaded or not). Had my membership info loaded in their computer since it had been purchased at the other location, was assigned a lane and went and shot. Afterwards I sat at the table in the lobby and reloaded my magazines, packed up my stuff, asked about some of the range guns available that I want to test fire to evaluate for future purchases and left. Never once was I challenged or asked to confirm my weapon load status, so I will stick with my assessment that the folks there at superior treat you as your behavior merits. If asked to unload on some future visit I will remind myself of the above reason (newbie or jerk they had to call down 2 minutes earlier) and do so, but I was very uncomfortable "unloading" in the parking lot. As recent events have shown even if I loaded while sitting in my car someone could still report me for branishing......just easier to do it in the building if need be but I really don't expect to be asked to.

How expensive is an unloading station? - a sand barrel will do.

or

Simply insist with signage that ALL handguns remain holstered at all times until on the range or until authorized.

OCed to Yukia Sushi Buffet today for my birthday dinner. Dined near 6-7 of VB's finest, at least a few of which took note of my G17. Neither of them batted an eye or even looked at me funny. Literally nothing at all. Just like it should be. That was a good experience. Recorder was running just in case :)

OCed there, Target and (spent 40 minutes in) Total wine (getting some awesome craft beers!) All without any issues at all.

I just OC-ed to Taste Unlimited in NN City Center and had to walk by Toby Keiths restaurant. I'm sad to say it has a no guns or weapons sign at its entrance. What is the world coming to when Country Singers ban weapons in their restaurant!?!?!

I guess I "won't" have to try his new restaurant after all!

Well I'm not surprised since he is an Obama supporter just like Brad Paisley. I no longer support them as a result.

OCed to Yukai Sushi Buffet today for my birthday dinner.

1) HAPPY BIRTHDAY, my friend!!!
2) I've carried frequently to Yukai, they've always been very hospitable, and for a buffet, the sushi isn't bad.
3) I promise to have an event scheduled soon, or at least in the works, I'd love to see you and your wife again. It was great to see you at the gun show last weekend.

Take care!
