Eric as I responded to you in the past, I will resend and respond again.

Eric, this young man is certainly able to open carry his firearm. The Officers in Town understand this and are aware of him doing so. This is a small community and some people were alarmed and disturbed. We identified the young man and allowed him to be on his way. I very much support his rights to open carry his weapon.

Sincerely,
Scott Ford

This is what I sent you and it is the bottom line.  This young man is well within the Law and it is his right to carry.  I hope everybody understands the residents of this Town do not see this everyday and some education will be needed and provided to them.  I hope everybody also understands we, the Police have to respond to every call by our residents.  Often when they call, they do not wish to give their name as was in this case.  We just got the call that someone was walking down a street with a gun.  The Police arrived identified the individual and when it was determined he had broken no laws, he was free to go.  The young man has no problem with the police department.

Thanks,

Scott Ford

Wow. Thank you very much, Chief Ford. With this information, I now know 100% that the PD has no problem with me. I don't hold anything that happened against you, or the department. This was merely a situation that you guys really had no experience with.

Hey guys! I have good news. The Chief is on my side.
Look at this email:

"I did tell you to get the CHP, but you have to be 21 so that is not really gonna be possible for awhile. The public's education is wanted and most likely gonna be provided by us(You and the Department) and them seeing you set the good example of being a responsible gun owner. Come by anytime."

Sincerely,
G. Scott Ford

This seems to be a good sign right here.
This right here makes me have more respect for the Chief.
Not only as an Officer, but as a person too.
Does this count as a win for our cause?

Welcome to the forum, Chief. thanks for what seems like a good outcome all around here - and we're glad to see someone of command rank whose head seems to be in the right place.

If you spend enough time here, you'll find members of departments from around the country who have changed procedure in dispatch for MWAG calls to include the question, "What is he doing with the gun?" If the answer comes back that the gun is holstered and he's shopping for lettuce, then the dispatcher can tell the caller that he's perfectly legal.

Haha...maybe instructional t shirts are in order...for all the old people who call the police whenever they see one of us carrying a gun while standing in line etc...something like.....Do not be alarmed, yes I have a gun and I am legally carrying it out in the open, please go about your business and do not bother the police by calling them about me, have a nice day!

Welcome to the forum Chief Ford and thanks for the quick and exemplary handling of
the aftermath of this encounter.

Most of us that OC just want a peaceful, non eventful day out, while OCing.
It helps greatly, when the LEO's of the area know and respect the laws of
this great state and nation, as you apparently do.

Thanks again for your attention and quick response to this matter, as it is greatly
appreciated.

I'm confused about something ? The Chief stated that the guy was I.D'd , and then let go on his way. In his opening statement he say's he was driven home and given a lecture.(In a unit i assume). BUT any way Thank You Chief Ford for the response, I look forward to visiting your great Parish soon.

I also suggest that you learn were the school zones are in your town so you can avoid them, if your town has a local newspaper maybe you can convince them to run a story on open carry so the local residents will be more aware of your right to open carry, that way they will not call the police and report that there is some crazy guy running around with a gun...
So how does one learn the 1000 ft zones around the property lines of everything the state considers a "school", when the parishes do not have the SZ maps they are required by law to have and make available to the public?

Interestingly, this was a point that helped the House Criminal Justice Committee vote favorably on HB 556, which would remove the 1000 foot zone for people with a CHP.

For us, the next step will be eliminating the zone altogether.

About all you can do is find the school zones in your local neighborhood and mark off 1000 ft, other than that you are screwed. You could park your car, or walk into an unknown unmarked school zone.

If a public servant is not doing their job, do you simply ask them... "please do your job"???? Perhaps there IS a way you can use the courts as an INDIVIDUAL to INSIST they do their job. MAYBE if one checked the RULES they MIGHT find just such a way.

Edit - Ahhhh Mr. estrch... you have shown your true colors in another thread... our discussion is over.
