Re: VA Open Carry - Hampton Roads

Those badges have been around for many years. They are just as stupid now as they were then. Those badges serve no purpose.

Pembroke Mall

Okay, so I put on my reporter hat and walked through Pembroke Mall taking pictures (not carrying in any manner).

BLUF (Bottom line up front) - Pembroke Mall prohibits firearms on the property
But - They do not do a good job posting that.
Pembroke code of conduct.jpg
There were 7 entrances to the mall proper from outside the building - Of those only 3 were marked with the signs.(both entrances on either side of Target and the entrance near Jason's Deli). There were no signs near the new main entrance at all.
Pembroke Entrance.jpg
Pembroke Entrance2.jpg
Pembroke Entrance3.jpg

Add to that all of the stores which have external entrances and allow access to the mall (Sears, Khols, Off broadway shoes, Target, etc) and there are alot of wholes. In addition the signs are TINY and hard to see. The Mall entrance by Jasons is "near" the access from Sears and where the entrace cooridor from the Red Cross entrance feeds into the center mall. You have to look close to see it from Jason's entrance. This shot is taken from sears looking at the entrance by Jason's (I added the circle so you can find it)
Mall entrance sears mod.jpg

Coming in from the Redcross entrance that sign is even harder to see and obscured by another sign.
Oops, can't upload anymore pictures, I hit my limit. Suffice it to say, Pembroke is not posted at all entrances and definately not with hard to miss signs. They don't seem to want people to know they are anti-gun but want the privledge of keeping us out anyway.

I know I can conceal carry and truthfully say I saw no sign on my way in but part of me is ticked and wants to poke the bear and open carry, maybe with 3 or 4 of my friends all coming in at different entrances at the same time to force the issue (Post for all to see or leave us alone!)

Maybe I will just call the management office tomorrow first and see if that gets me anywhere.

Well, as my wife and daughter pointed out to me....If all I accomplish is for the mall to post all entrances what have I accomplished. Get rid of the holes in the posting big enough to drive a truck through and now most law abbiding gun holders will not CC in a properly posted buisness. The safety of ourselves and our love ones is deminished, not preserved in this tilt at the windmill so it is probably better to leave mall management ignorant and CC when I go there since it is not posted (at least at the door I will enter through)

Please! Don't do that!

All you will achieve is making sure that mall management places larger, more noticeable signs on all entrances!

It is counter-productive and will accomplish nothing as stated in your second post!

Encouraging signage that opposes our cause is a definite "Do not do!"

Think. Do not help them.

Understood. Smoothing my hackles back. Part of my still wants to poke them in the eye but as my wife and daughter pointed out (and others here have confirmed) it would hurt and there is NO upside/anything to gain so I will grit my teeth and conceal if I need to visit that mall.

Gun Show

Just got back from the Hampton gun show. I didn’t get there until 2 PM and it seemed to not be extremely crowded like previous shows. I do know that there was also a show in Richmond this weekend which may have drawn customers away as well; or maybe the gun buying hysteria has lessened a bit? Still trying to decide between a Glock 23, Glock 27 or a M&P 40 or M&P 40 compact; any thoughts? I prefer compact guns but having a gun too small kind of defeats the purpose of open carry as the BG might not see it. Of course I can buy the extended mags and make the compact gun almost as visible as the larger model.

I bought a Don Hume leather holster which is meant for carry in the small of the back but can also be used for left handed hip carry which is how I will use it. The holster guy was nice and looked for 10-15 minutes to find the right model for me; I didn’t mind giving him my $25. Even though it is tension only someone would have to use a lot of force at just the right angle to get it out. I am considering adding a removable Velcro strap to it for when I am in a crowded area. I saw someone online saying that you can just superglue the felt to leather? Anyone ever tried this?

On another note, before getting to the show I was at a gas station where the cashier is on an island behind bulletproof glass. When he saw my gun he congratulated me for protecting myself and said that you need to around here.

I was there Saturday about 12ish. I'm glad I didn't want to look at any handguns. Every table was blocked with people looking at a handgun or waiting to talk to the seller. Same with any table that had ammo on it. And 9mm ammo was 50 cents per round for cheapo tullammo and federal. 100 round box fed and white win was 50 bucks. Yea no thanks. SOME of the tables with long guns were accessible. But it was pretty well packed Saturday. The couple Glocks I did get to look at were priced normally. Not a single 19 to be found tho.

Saying Hello

I've been a prowler on the forum for awhile, and though I'm moving to Texas in a month or so, wanted to say hey and thanks for all the good advice I've read over the past few months. I now open carry all the time with me beautiful XDm .40 and do so for preventative self defense. (Also trying to get all my CC buddies to OC). I finally wrote a post to ask a question from this particular group. I bought a shoulder harness for the heck of it and to possibly CC in Texas, and I wondered if you all think it "looks to aggressive" to promote in a friendly way the OC cause. I really like it simply for comfort and sitting. Normally I carry in a Serpa. Thanks for any thoughts!

A shoulder harness is pretty cozy when carrying, I especially like that you can cross draw. Since TX is not yet an OC state, I'd be careful with how you do it though, since if you're wearing a jacket, you'd not likely be able to take the jacket off, whereas with a belt holster your shirt could easily conceal. But that's just my opnion, and I haven't ever concealed while using a shoulder harness, and frankly haven't worn one in quite some time. I don't think it looks aggressive at all, but again, that's me. Safe travels!

Glad you didn't get any adverse comments at Red Lobster. I'd heard that was a "gun free zone" so I've avoided it. Maybe I'll have to rethink that.

Nothing on the door and I had not heard otherwise so I went in. Had to wait in the lobby for about 15 minutes, sat right by the hostess stand. Removed my outer jacket as I got ready to sit in the booth. I was seated so my hip with the weapon was towards the wall vice the isle but that was solely based on manners (lady has the view of the room, guy only has eyes for her) vice trying to be invisible.

Manager came to the table when we had a complaint (lobster tacos had mainly shrimp and very little lobster). There were no comments or urgent whisperings at other table that I could detect so maybe no one even noticed. I would like to think they did and it wasn't a big deal. Of course my smiling face and friendly demeanor could have something to do with how I am percieved. I am sure if I went in all surly and angry looking it might have made some people nervous, but I wasn't and I didn't.

Good to hear - thanks for checking it out.

Personally, I always sit with the best, most commanding view to protect and defend the one most important to me. My chosing the booth will also allow my OC to be most visible, strong side out - that's done for the same reason(s) I OC.

We've dined at our nearby Red Lobster many times. While I don't always OC (weather dependent), I've never had an issue. I try to sit facing the door, which sometimes exposes my strong side (OK, cross-draw), but either side out is good for me. Once while seated in a booth at a Longhorn(?) Steakhouse strong side out, some drunk at the bar noticed that I was carrying and actually came over and tried to sit next to me while asking about my gun. I slid further into the booth while blocking him from my gun by shielding it with my arm hand while pushing him back with both hands. If I can, I'll sit with gun toward wall.

Actually, for where we were seated I probably from a situational awareness POV chose the seat I had. I had a full view of the patrons at the bar. there was one table of 5 ladies to my back but their table was in the corner. Anyone entering the section of the restaurant we were in would have entered from my 8 o'clock. Not great but mirrors allowed me to watch that ave of approach without looking like I was watching it and I had the 90% of the customers in that section in my field of view.....But, I hear you and understand the rationale (and wisdom) of choosing the correct seat.

Oc'd today in LAFB off-base housing office, Wal Mart in Yorktown, Lowes and Taco Bell on Jefferson. Got a big stink eye in Lowes and a few minutes later a manager came up to talk with me. He was polite, asked if everything was good and if I had found what I needed. Never mentioned the gun and wished me a great day. I like polite people!

OC-ed to Food Lion today no issues. From the VCDL alert, I plan to head up to the meeting.

***************************************************
2. Reminder: VCDL
speaking in protest of James City County's censorship of Sheriff Deeds
TODAY
***************************************************

The James
City County Board of Supervisors got a barrage of emails on Friday. If you
didn't send an email to them, let's do so before 4 PM tomorrow
(Tuesday)!

If you can attend, please do so. If you don't want to speak,
that is OK, as I will ask for those who support our position to please stand.
If you want to speak, all the better.

ACTION ITEM #1:

Let's PACK
the James City County Board of Supervisors meeting with gun owners and GSL
stickers! Those who would like to speak should do so, especially those who live
in James City County.

The meeting is THIS coming Tuesday, March 26, at 7
PM at:

James City County Government Center
Board Room, Building
F
101 Mounts Bay Rd.
Williamsburg, VA 23185

If you would like to
speak at the meeting, you can send in a Speaker's Card **electronically** by
going to:

http://www.jamescitycountyva.gov/bos/speaker-card.html

(you
must send in the card before 4 PM on 3/23)

As this is a regular local
government building, carry should be OK.

ACTION ITEM #2:

Let's
fire an email salvo that will overflow the in-boxes of the Board of Supervisors
and get their attention!

Email addresses:

jccboard@jamescitycountyva.gov

Suggested
subject line:

Reinstate the Sheriff's Second Amendment
statement!

Suggested message:

As an elected official of the
County, the statement made by Sheriff Deeds showing support for the Second
Amendment, part of the Constitution that he and YOU took a solemn oath to
support, needs to be put back on the County's web site, where it belongs. At a
time when the Constitution is being shredded around the country, the citizens of
James City County need to see where their government stands on protecting their
rights.

To have removed that statement shows a severe disdain, not only
for the U.S. and Virginia Constitutions, but for Sheriff Deeds, and to the
voters who have trusted all of you to protect these rights.

Please put
the Sheriff's statement back on the County's web
site.

Sincerely,

-

WHY WE ARE HOLDING THE
PROTEST

After the James City County Sheriff, Robert J. Deeds, posted a
statement of support for the Second Amendment on the James City County web site,
the Board of Supervisors voted to have it removed! The County Attorney and
Supervisor Robert Middaugh seem to be leading the charge to do so, claiming that
the Sheriff's statement was political in nature. Not all on the Board agreed
with that, with the strongest push back coming from Supervisor Mary Jones (Vice
Chair), who fully supported the Sheriff's statement.

Here is the
"offending" statement from the Sheriff that was censored from the web
site:

“I, and the deputy sheriffs of the Williamsburg-James City County
Sheriff’s Office have sworn to uphold the Constitution of the United States and
the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The oath of office we
took includes upholding the Second Amendment of the U.S. Bill of Rights and
Section 13 of the Virginia Bill of Rights, each guaranteeing our citizens the
right to bear arms.

While I am Sheriff, neither I, nor any deputy sheriff
in this office will take any action to aid or abet encroachment on this
fundamental right of our citizens.”

The Sheriff is a patriot and is
reiterating a key part of his oath of office. To some people, like the Sheriff,
that oath actually means something. To some of the Board members and their
staff, not so much.

A link to a story on the issue:

From
wydaily.com: http://tinyurl.com/amr6seg

Video of
the County Attorney explaining why the Board was justified, in his opinion, in
censoring the Sheriff. It also includes Mary Jones pushing back. Every thing
starts around the 94 minute mark:

OC-ed to Subway, Rite Aid and the JCC Board of Supervisors meeting.

There were no anti-2a speakers and several pro-2a Sheriff Deeds supporters speaking.

In the end the BoS decide to table the proposal to restore his statements to the website until after they have a meeting to discuss policy of what should be allowed on County websites. It was the easy way out and no guarantee that they will reverse the censorship.

Their main point of contention was that they were leary of the Sheriff's comment that he wouldn't enforce any law that infringed on 2A rights. In their opinion he has to enforce the constitution and laws as written. In reality they all have the duty to nullify any law that violates the constitution but they just don't have the gumption to make a stand nor statement. Praise should go to Sheriff Deeds for taking a stand and informing his constituents that he stands by the Constitution!

I suggested they all resign if they couldn't stand up with the Sheriff. I ain't holding my breath. :-(

ETA: Only one BoS was 100% constitutional supportive and that was Supervisor Mary Jones who deserves our support!
