I understand your point. I do my grocery shopping a a small local grocery store in my area and when I was there Sunday morning (not carrying) I went to the service counter as as to speak to the manager / owner. The lady behind the counter was polite and told me the owner was in and could she relay a message. I told her that I wanted to know their policy on open carry in the store. She did not know what "open carry" was so I informed her that it was about carrying a pistol in public. She thought for a few seconds and said " I do not think we have that law in Wisconsin yet". I politely informed her that yes we did have that law and she was probably thinking of "Coneal Carry", and that I wanted to speak to the owner. She went to his office and came back with the answer that he has only owned the store for a few months (loaclly owned, not corporate franchise), and that he wanted to do some research on the subject before he answered my question so he could based his answer on being more aware of what my question involved. The lady agreed to give him a note so I wrote down this website with instructions on how to get to the Wisconsin section. I called him this morning and he did confirm he got the message. I left him my name and number and told him if he had any questions or concerns to give me a call. I will say that I was impressed by his willingness to research the information before just giving a "not allowed: answer out of ignorance of fear.

I will update with his decision (and the name of the store) when I hear back from him. If I do not hear from him, he will again hear from me....

Finally, I know and understand that it is our constitutional as well as legal right to O.C. in most public places as well as most public places of business but as stated n my original post, being real new at this, I want to not have any hassles my firat few times O.C. in public. I really beleive if I had jsut walked in carrying, I would have been questioned and possibly asked to leave (until the owner could reseach what I would have been telling him, or worst case senario (for me) would have been the uninformed lady at the service desk would have seen or heard that I was carrying and called the poloice. I understand that to others here that that would have been an acceptable or even a prefered outcome while excersising a leagl right. I would just appreciate your understanding of my current position with the awareness that in the near future I too would also be more comfortable and even welcome either senario described above.

I think all of us can relate to your concerns on your first time ocing alone and there have been some over reactions (Brookfeild, Madison Racine). However There are thousands of times a week of opencarrying in Wisconsin that are event less and go unnoticed .
I general the worst case would be you are asked to leave.

A good first solo opencarry place might be Mcx's shop. the only thing you'll have to worry about there is theft of your firearm!!

Not really a theft, but "lost." It seems McX's collection continues to grow... Maybe there is a correlation?

ah yes lots of misplacen going on over there

Not really....He is only interested in 1911's.

Outdoorsman,
Actually..... you may be better off not asking a business's policy and just carrying.

Once you know or are aware of the policy and/or politics you may find your self
not doing business with them as often or if at all.

If your not aware of the policy worst they can do is ask you to leave.

If your aware of it and disregard it,then its possible you could be charged for trespassing.

Dont ask to perform a Right.

As I said.. I understand what has been said...it is more a matter of personal preference than what others think I should do... Being my first ever O.C. in public alone, it would be MY personal preference to just carry hassle free...

As soon as I know the owners policy then that will determine if I have to concern myself with future confintation in his store.. If his policy is positive I can carry without concern... If his policy is negative I will not have any concern either, because I will not be there...

Again.. I do understand and agree with the "don't ask to perform a right" mindset... I was not asking their permission to carry, I was asking their policy on the issue which would allow me to make a educated decision on wether or not to do business with them. I will admit that I am starting to lean towards just carrying and handle what ever happens at the time.... I am hearing what you are saying...

Outdoorsman1.

Added Info.... I would not intentionally violate a stores policy...which was one of my reasons for asking thier policy in the first place...If they allow, I am there... If they do not allow.. I would not carry there...

well,,,

just so you know, their is a good reason that asking for permission is just plain Wrong!

you may feel that you are being polite and respectful, BUT your actions really hurt the movemant!

many stores do not have a policy, they may be often frequented by OCers, and
not even know that they are, an OC friendly establishment!

When you call and inquire about their policy, they will quite often decide, that they should make one, and it will be NO GUNS!

Now your personally misguided inquiry has the effect of turning that establishment
against EVERY OTHER OCer, even though they may have been customers there for years!

DO NOT ASK for permission to exercise OUR rights!

Thank you for sharing that information... I AM new to all this...

I will keep you posted as to the stores decision which has not yet been made... I am thinking it could go either way...

"you may feel that you are being polite and respectful, BUT your actions really hurt the movemant!"

I will not ask permission in the future...

Last thing I want to do is "really hurt the movemant!"

How could a store be "often frequented by OCers" and not even know they are there?

Unless of course the OCer was not carryinig at the time, which i suppose would make my question moot..

I OC most times I leave the house and also usually where my 'guns save lives' button. I cannot count the # of times people come up to me and talk to me about my button and then when I mention I OC they look down and say 'wow! didn't even see that!' and I carry a full sized semi auto Taurus 24/7 in a paddle holster.

Please, do not take this the wrong way but I believe you are just self conscious. I was too until I got a few OC's under my belt, so to speak. The 1st several times I was jumpy and though EVERYONE was starring at me. After a couple times, I just don't think about it and in my experience, no one else does either.

I have heard it said i dont know how many time and i have to agree it helps going out your first couple times with someone else who is OCing. I am not saying this because they know how to do it better or anything to that effect but because it makes you feel like less of a "target" for roaming eyes (real or imaginary) That being said even the few people who have had an issue with me OCing have noticed till i had been talking to them for atleast 5 mins. I also do not believe the size of the ggun makes much difference either. I know of a few people who carry large revolvers that are on this fourm and would pass that issue to the but i havent heard of them getting any more or less attention than those that carry smaller guns

Like Paul and civilwarguy I was the same way the first few times I OC'd but once you realize that the majority of people aren't going to freak out and run screaming it becomes a non issue. You may get the occasional odd look but I've had more people ask me about it than overreact. Most are curious about it and ask why I carry, then I tell them to call for the police, an ambulance and a pizza and see which one arrives first :p. But once you explain that it is perfectly legal and the reasons why I do they pretty much get it. I've only had one person insist that guns are the root of ALL evil and people shouldn't be allowed to own, much less carry, guns to which I say the 2nd Amendment states I DO have a constitutional right to own AND carry for protection and that there have been two SC decisions in that past two years affirming that right.

New here

Hey guys and gals. My name is Will, I'm sure i met a few of you at this event last Sunday (March 6th). I'm new to firearms, shooting and most of all Open Carry. Sunday was only my second time ever carrying a gun in public (Saturday being my first) and it was kind of intimidating. I just want to thank all of you who were there and the support, engaging conversation and fellowship you all provide. Special thanks to Rob, Todd, and a few others. My friend Adam and I will be happily returning to this event in the future and hopefully brining along some other enthusiasts.
Well I'll just finish this by saying I look forward to seeing you all in the future and hope you all have a great week! :D

Outdoorsman..

First time I met Protias...
It was an OC Dinner...Lizzy's in fact.
I scanned the room 3x lookin for other OC'ers.
I missed him all 3x and he wasnt more than 10 ft from me.
I seen his face...missed the gun....and I was lookin for the gun.

Crowded Grocery store...easiest place there is to carry.
People are too busy filling their lists, and moving around other people carts, screamin kids, and in the frame of mind of spending money they dont wanna spend.

They are literally numb....Zombies....Sheeple.

Your not even 10x as conspicuous as you would think.
