Might be more to the story but seems to be beggars belief it's considered an offence to return fire in this scenario.

A Tasmanian home owner has been charged for allegedly shooting at four men who had come to his home in the early hours of the morning and tried to force their way inside.

Key points:
•Police say four men fired shots at a Colebrook house
•The male occupant allegedly returned gunfire, hitting a man in the leg
•Three men from the car have been charged and the resident has been charged with wounding

The 68-year-old Colebrook man has been charged with wounding.

A 50-year-old man remains in the Royal Hobart Hospital after undergoing surgery yesterday for a single bullet wound to his upper thigh.

Police allege he and three other men went to the property in Colebrook at about 6:00am on Sunday morning.

It is understood they were acquaintances of the man's son, who they believed was staying with him.

It is alleged the men fired two shots at the house and then tried batter down the front door of the residence.

The 50-year-old and his alleged co-offenders, aged 42 and 48, have been charged with aggravated burglary and recklessly discharge a firearm.

They were picked up by police driving a red Magna a short distance away from the crime scene.

A fourth man — a 38-year-old — escaped on foot.

Police allege the home owner fire a gun at the men.

The 50-year-old's injury is to the back of his thigh and he may have been running away at the time.

The three men are all expected to face court later today, while the home owner has been bailed to attend court at a later date.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was travelling on Colebrook Road between the Tea Tree turnoff and Rhyndaston Road between 6:00am and 7.30am on Sunday and may have dash-cam footage of a red Magna, registration ES3962.

Police would also like to speak to anyone with information in relation to the incident.

Information can be provided to Glenorchy CIB on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.

It comes as a home intruder died after an altercation with a resident at a house in Sydney's south-west on Sunday.
