In OK? That's one of the few states I'd sort of expect "cowboy" to be accepted.
Not that carrying = cowboy, mind you, but to some people it does.

MIL is from Ohio. Though her son who's 20 just got a handgun (gifted to him by his dad since he can't legally buy it from the store) and wants to start carrying, and her husband has also started buying guns, and MIL always says how we need to prepare for the fall of the U.S. (or for the apocolypse, which term she uses depends on her mood) cuz Washington is ruining the country. So it was just all around odd that my gun would bother her, but her own family having guns doesn't. Though I think it has more to do with her simply not liking me and the gun was just one more thing to complain about as she has repeatedly ignored me in the past and even hinted that my wife and I should get divorced. She has been cut from our lives till she can apologize for how she acted (as my wife put it, she threw a tantrum worthy of a 4year old), and FIL has been cut out due to how he acted when my wife called to say that MIL was no longer welcome to visit or talk to us until she apologizes.

A bit off topic, but the whole situation just makes me mad, and to think that she wouldn't want me to be able to defend my family in my own home :banghead:

Posted in a diff. thread, same topic, but-if someone's out there to do harm-they might not hesistate to just shoot the dogs. Happened to me-they killed mine when it began barking to alert me to their approach. Not fun at all.

I can see the loss issue, but I consider my dogs to be working dogs or tools, in that I understand that it would totally suck to have them killed by a BG, but they would get off a few barks before anyone one would get close enough. Unless of course they snipered them, then I would be totally SOL. It would suck to lose them, but if it gave me enough time to respond it would be worth it. I don't mean to sound cold about my dogs, they are part of the family, but my blood comes before any animal.

It's with me all the time !!

It's with me all the time. I wear my .45 on my hip in a safariland level III holster. When Im driving it's in my lap or on the seat next to my right leg with quick come uppance. When Im sleeping I block the door so it cant get kicked in and put my .45 on the nightstand next to the bed, the tritium sights let me know where it is.

when Im pumping gas I take the keys out of the ignition (duh !!!!) and have my .45 on the drivers seat or on my hip with the door unlocked so I can get it in a hurry if I get jumped pumping gas.........

last friday morning at 5 am I was pumping gas and there was this guy all spaced out standing in the road, another car left the station and he pounded on the windows of that minivan, that driver must of called the po po because it was only a couple minutes later they came, but in the meanwhile that guy was staring my direction.... nothing happened, but you never know when or where.

Badger, that's interesting, but I sleep under a blanket and my firearm sleeps with me. If the crap hits the fan I'm good to go in less than a second, whether inside my place or outside.

I'll worry clothes, later. And who knows? My condition might startle an intruder enough to give me some tactical advantage.

Heh, I was teasing, but keep in mind that cell phone, extra clips, tac-light, and other minor accessories (OC spray?) in a bandolier can be indispensable. You can fasten it around the waist or over shoulder and crawl around keeping low, if needed and not be wanting or searching for that stuff. When I get up at night I grab the BUG and put it in the t-shirt under-arm sleeve so I'm used to finding it in a second in the dark. One person on another forum talked about using the rope on the side of most mattresses to put an IWB holster for easy reach. I'm still experimenting.

I started carrying at home after reading about several home invasions that took place in the middle of the day with the homeowners present. I usually carry whatever I carry out of the house. When I don't feel like lugging around a full-size pistol at home I carry my PF-9 or Taurus PT-738.

I OC around the home all the time (its the only place I can legally do so for the most part). I've answered the door multiple times like that and every person who noticed at least acted approving of it. I was actually surprised by their actions given that its illegal to OC in public here. It's actually been friends and family who have been more alarmed by it. My mother-in-law even asked my wife when I wasn't around "what's up with that cowboy crap?" But then again she left 10 days into a 30 day trip because we didn't agree on a LOT of things.

Yeah, MILs

Actually, in Oklahoma there is no restriction on carrying inside your own building ... as a business owner, you can open carry inside your building ... as long as you were concealed when you went out in public. Whether your business is open to the public or not, it is still private property.

As for me, I OC whenever I am inside my own building, home or business. I also answer the door after dark with the pistol in my hand and safety off. Deputy sheriff came one night (problem with my business) and being as tall as he was, he could see in the windows in my door and saw me with the pistol in my hand and he and his partner drew theirs. I opened the door, identified them and secured my pistol and they did the same. One even commented that he is trying to convince his wife to do the same

Of course, in a rural area such as most of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, NM, Arizona, the Sheriffs are generally a little more laid back/understanding about firearms.

You should also check all local ordinances to see what applies to your particular area (can residents of DC have handguns or not yet )

And a metro LEO might not be as understanding, and I know for sure that there are LEO in my town that would shoot first and ask questions later ... especially me.

As I see it, the more LEO that have a good encounter with a LAC w/gun, the less hysterical objections to OC/CC getting passed. Carry on however it is available to you now.

We live back in the boonies so far we rarely get any visitors. Most of the neighbors have vacation property, and the few full timers are all pretty private...(including us)...but I strap up if I hear a strange vehicle, especially if it is headed towards one of the part timers properties.

It's funny to see the reaction of someone not expecting a Dobermann and an openly armed person walk out of the woods. So far it has never been someone that should be there, but the neighbors always thank me when they come back. They also make a point of introducing us to their friends and relatives that may show up when they are not present.

Wake up, stand up, pull on pants and stick a firearm on my hip. Long before the shoes...

Hunting Mama I completely agree with you. I keep a pistol on my nightstand and another in a holster under the mattress. I have a holster on my belt and after putting the pants on, the pistol on the nightstand goes in the holster. The pistol goes back on the nightstand just before I get in the bed. The rest of the day is armed. I live in the Great State of Washington. Here "We, the People", can exercise out 2A rights daily

I carry around the house because of where I live.

I live in a rooming house. Basically we rent a room and share the rest of the house, Pay by the week, the problem lies that it is open to anyone who can pay the rent there are no BG checks. We have had several tenants removed from everything from prostitution to dealing drugs. I only live there because its cheap. (Currently the guy across the hall is a felon on the sex offender list)

I dont have a CHP but state laws allow to CC on my own property and thats what I usually do. I dont even go the the bathroom with out it. The only reason I dont OC around the house is I dont want them knowing I have it, they may try to break in my room and steal it when Im gone (even though it stays on me at all times)

I open carry around my house pretty much all the time. I don't ever rarely put my pistol away unless for a valid justified reason. I'm not really too worried about having a break in or some moron breaking in the house during the day, but there is always that chance and I don't want to take that risk. My area of town is pretty clean on crime except for the occasional gas station robbery and the few abductions we have had here. We don't get alot of active crime here, usually if something happens its not reported until the next day!

I get up, get dressed, and strap on the gun belt. I’m setting hear in front of the computer with my gun on. If I’m out in the shop and I do take my gun off it isn’t far where I am. I don’t get many visitors. They don’t know if I have any of my kids out. See I raise Wolves, everyone is more afraid of them than they are of me. But it is the other way around. The barky Dogs are inside at night. If the dog does start to bark I usually grab the shotgun and slip out the back doar.

I am always carrying at home. I switch back and forth between OC and CC depending on where I am going that day (GFSZ).

When I OC I have a BUG CC-ed so when I have to go to a place where I have to CC I often simply use the BUG in CC mode.

I liked the comment from someone that 100% of home invasions happen in the home. :)

One thing I have noticed is that I tend to bump into counters and corners alot more when OC-ing and luckily the holster takes most of the abuse.

I prefer a Sig P220 Stainless Elite or my H&K USP for OC depending on my journies for the day. I consider my Sig my "dress up" gun and my USP a every day carry gun.

One time while at home I had the front door open and the screen (glass) door closed a person selling door to door (magazines or cleaner can't remember) got big GOOGLY eyes :shocker: after seeing my gun and lost any interest in making a sale and promptly left my yard. At least it saved me from having to be gruff with him.

I'm prohibited from carrying at the office, but as soon as I get home, the gun goes into the holster on my hip. Not going to work that day? The gun gets holstered as soon as I get my pants on.

I have yet to get a pistol that I can conceal better! My Glock35 is a big too large for concealing! But I will NEVER get rid of any my firearms. I am still considering on buying a compact Glock for my CC pistol. At the same time I want to get a .45 ACP for a compact! My idea is to get different pistols of different calibers just to have a wide variety.

I don't open carry around the house the way some people think. However, there is never a moment in my home where a firearm is not less than a foot and a half from my hand. When friends ask why, I tell them it's much easier than dashing to the bedroom to grab the guns in case someone tries to break in. I happen to live a block from where the wanna be thugs and drug dealers live. I figure, I keep gun handy just in case, I hopefully never have to use it.

There's only one sure and certain way to keep the less than Very Dedicated people from coming to your door.
Get one of those custom engraved brass plaques and put it prominently on the door by the bell, reading -

"If Nudity Offends You,
Please Do Not Ring Bell."

Do it a few times and the problem takes care of itself. You might get a 'reputation' in the neighborhood but what is that compared to the peace of one's own home?
