Has there been a decision on what the billboard(s) will say?

Sorry, I just love this stupid banana thing, reminds me of that family guy episode.

I have full confidence you'll have a brief easy to understand message. The OCDO home page picture of all the people strapped would work well too.

Mike and I will be posting the current billboard ideas in a separate thread with a poll so that you can help us select from amongst the competing ideas.

I'm sure once they get around to posting the thread with the ideas, someone will cross post the link on this thread.

Might I suggest 2 billboards, I will donate another 100 myself. One on I-35 near 290 for North Bound, and one near Ben White for South Bound. Those areas are always a nightmare during rush hour, and there will be plenty of time to see them.
I'm not sure we can gebnerate enough $ - we need like $5K to get it made and up for 2 months, then another $1,500 per month therafter - and If we do have that kind of donarship, then maybe we should put the sign outside another maor metro area like Houston or Dallas

I think a Billboard in Houston or Dallas would be more effective. Austin is such a Hippie town, completely detatched from the rest of our Lone Star State. I think one in the DFW area would be best, even though I'd LOVE to see one on here in H-town, because there are seemingly more people in that part of Texas that are HARDCORE about their fire-arms rights and would hop on this bandwagon more eagerly than in Houston. Just my $.02

I'd like to reitterate my thanks to all you folk caring so much for my safety and the right of Texans to defend themselves how they please. The fact that so much has been generated so quickly brings my eyes to welling. :dude:

Most of us understand that we are all in this together.

I wish I could do more but I am in real estate related businesses and as you can imagine, I'm not making big bucks in the current market.

Houston and DFW are going to be tough to decide where to put them. Houston has 9 majorfreeways coming into it and DFW probably has more. I vote for a second one in Austin. These tree huggers andretired hippies up herewill scream bloody murder and that will get all kinds of attention. whutdyathank? Shoot, I bet the Austin Anti-American Statesman will even do a hack job about it.

Morning, Boys!

I just did PayPal for $100.

I just got back from a month in South Texas and was astounded to find that it is illegal to OC in Texas. I was even more astounded to find that if someone sees your weapon while carrying concealed - it is "brandishing". What nonsense! Brandishing is pulling your weapon and waving it around in a threatening manner. Don't they have dictionaries in Texas?

Anyway, I just quit my job, partly over the carry issue. As a geologist in charge of a nuclear logging rig (potential terrorist target) I was, initially allowed to carry. Then the Canadian home office decided that under no circumstances was anyone to be armed on company property or in a company vehicle. The carry issue and other lies by management led to my willful self termination.

It is high time that people grew up and took a bit more responsibility for their own actions and their own safety.

Any of you make it to Wyoming, stop in for a coffee and some conversation.

On topic: billboard is great but I agree that D/FW would be better than Austin. Same with Houston. You have a chance to influence more people.

Ido think that we need to be very active right now as our legislators are running for election. Make sure that Joe Driver (R-Garland), a big CC proponant, and other influential legislators are well acquainted with the benefits of OC. We should also hold a rally/BBQ in Austin while the Legislature is in session. Go lobby your members during the day (maybe with an open empty holsteras a jesture or CC-ing if you have a CHL) and then fellowship that evening.

Big Ugly: whoever told you about brandishing was telling you a whopper. There is no such thing under Texas law. Yes, OC is illegal at the moment (with some exceptions). As for concealing, you have to INTENTIONALLY fail to conceal your gun. The wind blowing your shirt open or a garment riding up as you reach for a can in the grocery market isn't illegal. If you truly were waving a weapon around and looking crazy you'd be charged with disorderly conduct or, if you pointed it at someone, deadly conduct.

Good luck with your next career step, hope you had fun in Texas, and we want to more closely mimic the Cowboy state regarding open carry real soon. :)

Good point on election coming up - OK, we had better do thsi asap.

On bill board location - I am starting to torment myself - so many factors:

  • Maximize the total number of people who see it at least once inX number of months - i think I-35 truly gets as much or more traffic generally from Texans from all parts of Texas, yes?
  • Good so people can see it from road.
  • Maximize the net number of people who see it might lean pro-gun.
  • Whether the location has particular significance that will raise publicity - I think having it near Austin and/or San Antonio (The Alamo) might help raise publicltiy - news reporting on advertizing :)
Also, maybe we can have enough $ to have one fixed villboard and a few electronic billboards in different metro areas.

Comments? Anybody have any specific leads on electronic bill board venders in their city?

Mike, I know of 1 electronic billboard in Austin. I'm fairly certainit rents by the day. I'll get the number when I go out to scout billboard spots. It's on the northbound side of I-35 just as you leave downtown.

Who's the message intended for?

If it's for TX citizens to contact their legislators, Austin seems the least effective, as Austin tends to be the liberal enclave of Texas.

More effective might be places where one finds large groups of population D/FW, San Antonio, Houston, etc. - and along commuter routes.

If it's for legislators to see and think (as if that were possible), somewhere in Austin near the Statehouse seems most appropriate. (For future consideration - do the legislators stay in hotels? Key-cards accept advertising.)

true - but then again, fact that it might be an anti-gun enclave might get the billboards more publicty state wide, and hence the issue and petition gets more publicity.
