OC Incident at Scottish Festival

Attended the Scottish Festival years ago, just north of Richmond i think. Lots of pretty lasses, a big bonfire after dark and a number of OCers - was fun for a member of the Graham Clan. Then on, I OC'd every year at the old State Fair Grounds (RIR) Scottish Festival, but alas since their move I have been deemed untrustworthy...

It looks like we're headed for litigation. The OP, HGreen, has already ante'd up what he could, but we'll need more cash. Since this is civil, and HGreen is the plaintiff, it's not going to be as easy as the usual criminal defense case, and we'll have to cough up money for depositions and stuff. I see this as affecting law enforcement activity all over Virginia, and my (oft-expressed) feeling is that bitching and moaning about situations like this won't make a spit's worth of difference in people's behavior. But this man was assaulted, not once, but twice, by sheriff's deputies apparently moonlighting in uniform, for no legal reason at all, merely because of the presence of his self-defense firearm. I often hear stories about police arresting people on flimsy excuses because of their desire to at least get "punishment by lawyer". A person arrested has to defend himself, and pay money to a lawyer to get at least a chance, and as some folks see it, that's a better punishment than actually having been convicted of a crime. Well, this is sort of putting the shoe on the other foot, except for the fact that it's not merely a flimsy excuse. Go back and re-read HGreen's letter that started this thread, and see whether or not you want to help do something about it.

A soon as a PayPal account and link are set up with instructions for mailing checks direct, I am sure a separate thread will be posted and cross posted for national coverage.

As 'house poor' as I am at the moment, and in spite of the fact that I don't live in VA, I too will donate. Need an email address for PayPal...

Appreciate your willingness to step forward.

Recognition of the problem and a desire to be part of the solution indeed knows no state boundaries.

Just as soon as a PayPal account is formalized, a link will be provided.

This UTAH resident who has NEVER EVEN BEEN TO VIRGINIA is willing to contribute. Awaiting the Paypal account info.

If it happens ANYWHERE in this Country it can happen where you live in this Country!

Is it adequate to mark checks "for hgreen" in the "for" line, user?

Good point, JMelvin and Peter Nap: any time a person wants to make a contribution and designate that contribution for a specific purpose (or case in this instance), the agency receiving the contribution is legally required to use the contribution for that purpose and no other. So anyone helping out with HGreen in particular should write "HGreen" on the memo line of the check.

As to Paypal: I have really serious reservations about that. I've had some civil litigation experience with Paypal, and as a result of what I learned, I would never, ever, do business with Paypal, myself. Paypal is not confidential; Paypal is not a bank; Paypal is not a regulated fiduciary financial institution; Paypal's only liability is to let you go to California to file suit against them in Santa Clara County, if I recall correctly, otherwise, if they lose your money, tough luck. If I can figure out a way to do it that is completely isolated from everything else I'm involved in, I might risk it, on the assumption that anyone contributing that way will be losing their money if Paypal screws up, subject to their right to complain to the issuing bank.

My plan is to set up a "merchant account" with a bank to accept credit card payments after we get through the State Corporation Commission and can set up bank accounts. Until then, if there's any way to cut a check or money order and mail it, that's the only way to get money into the fund. At present, I'm accepting donations as the attorney for the organization that is in the process of becoming. Until there's a "street-legal" entity that exists as a separate person, I can't set up bank accounts for the organization. I've been working on this for months, and it's like, "any day, now" kind of status.

Currently deployed, so I can't mail a check but as soon as an electronic means is set up, count me in. It makes me sick to think about someone's rights being walked all over like this, after all the time spent out here to protect them back home. This kind of behavior can not be tolerated against citizens of our country.

Thank you for your service and your continued interest in the home front.

You have seen the loss of freedom first hand and could no doubt teach us much.

This letter was supposed to be a formal complaint to them. I may do the FOIA next if I don't get any positive response from my kind initial letter.

"FOIA next" is a big mistake. If you fire a warning shot, they'll just destroy the evidence and your late FOIA will yield nothing.

I'd love to contribute, but I already gave everything I had...

Can we attend court dates to show support as well? I'd like to do that and offer my donation in person. I look forward to road trips whenever possible... Just send me the courthouse address for my GPS and a date; I'm there!
