OC enroute to Sturgis

4 August, I Open Carried in Wall, SD in several stores and restaurants at the Wall Drug shopping center. Bought tourist items (T-shirts, patches) and no remarks or visits by Law Enforcement.
Felt like I was back in northern Virginia.

I'm headed out to Sturgis on Monday and always hit Wall Drug on the way.

Glad to hear you will be OCing! Take full advantage of this Gold star state. Just remember that you HAVE TO HAVE a Concealed carry Permit( or Permit to Carry) Just to carry it on your Motorcycle!

32-20-6.6. Carrying firearm on motorcycle or off-road vehicle--Exception for holder of concealed pistol permit or disabled hunter permit--Enforcement--Violation as misdemeanor. No person, other than a law enforcement officer or conservation officer, or any person on the person's own land or land leased by the person, may operate or ride on any motorcycle or off-road vehicle with any firearm in the person's possession unless the firearm is completely unloaded and within a carrying case which encloses the entire firearm. However, this section does not apply to any person who is carrying a pistol and possesses a permit to carry a concealed pistol issued pursuant to chapter 23-7. This section does not apply to any person who holds a permit issued pursuant to § 41-8-37 while engaged in hunting from an off-road vehicle in accordance with the provisions of the permit. This section shall be enforced by all law enforcement officers including conservation officers. A violation of this section is a Class 2 misdemeanor.

Just finished up the South Dakota portion of our annual summer motorcycle trip and I'll have to add to the original poster's thoughts.

I did open carry everyday and pretty much all day with zero problems.

Various stores, restaurants, city, country, interstate fuel stops and "local" area fuel stops.

100% perfect.

Why can't my state be like this?

Heck, why can't this be the standard across the entire country???

Once again, my thanks to the state of South Dakota for your excellent hospitality, excellent roads and great weather this year. Besides that, it's a beuatiful state to see the sights!

Yep, just like to say thx also. Open carried while on the bike traveling to the Rally the whole time, even tho my vest was all during most of the trip. We stopped in yankton to the museum but had my shirt over it. Spent the night in Winner but never left the hotel. Had 1 in my pocket at the pub. Stopped for the night on the way home in Yankton and 'open carried' in the pizza ranch. I say " cause my vest covered most of it except when seated. Some staff did see it. Same for McD's and the gas station in Vermillion. Never a problem. Alot of folks seen it at gas stops and while riding.
I never did open carry during the rally but had 1 in my pocket and will leave it at that. Talked to a Sturgis Leo at the Dakota mart as he was talking to another rally goer in line. The guy had gun questions and the leo answered them and was real nice. The leo told him that if he does get stopped, never tell them you are armed unless the cop asks. I told him he is the 1st leo that I hear say that. All the others say to disclose you are carring. He also said they just stopped 2 out of State leos for DUI and they were carring, which I guess is illegal in SD. He said they have felonies now.
Still cant get up the nerve to oc in Sturgis during the rally. I think the main reason is that I am or will already be drinking. Cant go into town and not have one. I'm never on the bike during this time tho. I take Da Bus into town.
The wife missed carring hers but i had 2 with me.
