A muzzle break well help reduce muzzle flip. They reduce but do not eliminate recoil.
Actually they do reduce felt recoil, that is why they are used on 50bmg sniper rifles. Part of the recoil is from the jet engine affect of gasses burning after the bullet leaves the barrel. The fact that a shorter barrel, which has less velocity with the same load used in a longer barrel recoils more.
I don't care for the top ported guns, I hate them. The noise is directed upward making shooting without hearing protection more painful, and in low light blinding. I do like side porting which reduces the the gases burning forward, pushing the gun backwards. I have side ported shotguns for women who did not like the recoil of a 12 ga, side porting lowers the recoil to 20 ga levels. Recoil in 380 can be lowered by using faster powders such as red dot, but there will be some loss in FPS.
This should give an idea of the power of hot gasses.
