Here's an eye opener. Article doesn't state in perfect detail if they're talking about OC, but it looks like it to me. Goes into details of definition of 'legally blind' versus completely and totally blind. Up to Sheriff in each county to make the determination. I like that they got completely blind since birth Stevie Wonder to say it was stupid a dumb idea - they didn't state if Stevie has sighted folks around him that carry his guns....

But a disability does not negate the fact that a law abiding citizen has the right to defend himself. Still...Scary.

Not so scary, option 1: Legally blind does not equal unable to see anything. Many can see better than the term implies and can do proper target acquisition. Naturally, they need proper training, perhaps moreso than a fully sighted person does. I'm aware of one person in Ohio who fits this description and has successfully obtained an Ohio CHL which requires one to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and aptitude necessary to shoot a handgun in a safe manner.

Not so scary, option 2: A completely blind person would likely not have the ability to determine an attack was imminent (depending on the manner fo attack, of course) and being unable to see would therefore probably rely on the ability to make a contact shot when assaulted. Also would need proper training. Again, a different sort of training than a sighted person, or even legally blind but still partially sighted person.

Depending upon the state and why the vision is being judged, 'legal blindness' can be anywhere from 20/200 (blind enough to warrant a cane) down to 20/70 (can't drive an automobile).

I find armed LEOs far scarier than a blind guy, law-abiding or criminal.

If he's law abiding you can simply leave him alone. If he's a criminal, you can just run away.

Either way, meh. If a blind person believes he will benefit from armed self-defense, who the heck am I to question it? Or even call it "scary"?

I completely support this. I support those that are completely blind exercising their right to defend themselves just like those who have perfect vision. Just because we have an impairment should not automatically strip us of our Natural rights. There are many instances when a completely blind individual could use a firearm for self-defense.

I do not have any concern when it comes to those that are legally blind carrying firearms. Many people who are legally blind actually have fairly good vision with the proper corrective lenses. The terminology makes it sound worse than it actually is, because when you throw the word "blind" in the mix it gives people a false sense of what is actually being described. Regardless of the impairment, we ALL have God-given or Natural rights that we are born with, and the right to defend our lives however we see fit is one of those rights.

I've never found the phrase "legally blind" to be of any value.

As far as I am concerned, blind is basically a binary status. The phrase "legally blind" is nothing but an example of dilution of language for no purpose other than to satisfy some bureaucratic nitwit's regulatory fetish.

Why can't we just call them "visually impaired"? Probably because that doesn't sound scary enough to justify arbitrarily classifying them as fully incapable (regardless of what their actual degree of capability is). So, better call them "blind" for maximum emotional appeal impact. Except, they're not blind, so now we have to create the fiction of "legally" blind.

last i looked my permit says "to carry weapons" a lot of home invastions happen at night so unless you have a light arnt you pretty much "blind" anyway? trying not to bring this up on purpose but wasnt the place where tryvon was shot pretty dark? i bet george didnt need to see him to shoot him. if im not mistaken dont you need a permit to carry if you are carrying a taser in iowa? or a knife thats long then i think 5 inches?

You're not mistaken. It's a permit to carry weapons, not a permit to carry a concealed handgun.
