... and that would be why I allow them to put a hi-lighter on my receipt. I always OC at Sams, too. Never had a problem. I've had a few fellow shoppers ask about it and once in a while someone decides to be somewhere else, but I've never had any interaction with store employees, so I just assume they're ok with Walmart Policy.

Bingo!

Sams, BJs, and Costco are all membership warehouse clubs. I believe it is in the membership contract you sign that they can check your purchases before you leave.
And at ANY TIME you decide you DON'T want to wait to have it checked, you can LEAVE. (Their only recourse is to cancel your membership)

It is illegal to seize someone's person or property because the had the ability to shoplift, you have to have seen them take something(or other RAS).

It is also illegal to seize someone's person or property because they break a contract with you.(leaving without being checked)

As for the Wal-Mart people- I never stop unless the alarm goes off. I've yet to have a checker stupid enough to try and stop me. (Wal-Mart doesn't even allow their loss prevention to TOUCH a person, much less detain them, even though legally they can do so for shoplifting.)

I've renewed my BJs membership several times over the years, I've never seen any wording directly about receipt checking. It probably falls under some sort of acceptable behavior broad brush.

I'm just curious why you feel the need to stop when the alarm goes off? It's not my problem there is a malfunction somewhere. I don't stop.
Did you read through the earlier posts in this thread? Apparently if the alarm goes off, they are legally allowed to assault you to get you to stop until they figure out what happened. I never knew this, and for the life of me, as often as these things give false alarms, I can't figure out how this passed the General Assembly.

I suppose you could assault them back, but they are specifically exempt from civil liability. You are not.

It's a horrible law that needs to be changed.

Christmas time Wal Mart posted a senior citizen at the door to check receipts. He said, "Excuse me, sir, I need to check your receipt!" I said, "No, you don't." and kept walking. I kinda felt sorry for him - it looked like he just had no idea what to do.
If the alarm goes off there is reasonable suspicion of a crime occurring.

back when i worked at walgreens i found this out. when you scan a bar code on the counter or using the ray gun, your supposed to swipe it over a magnetic tablet thingie underneath the counter. it is supposed to disable those weird purple sticker anti theft things. a lot of time any type of electronics will have them. video games, electronic toothbrushes, some makeup and perfume boxes have them.

If the item doesn't get swiped well enough over the magno tablet, then the door alarms read the purple anti theft sticker and your item will trigger the alarm.

A good friend of mine was entering the local Commie-Mart and observed a largish, darkish female being chased by two employees from the store wif a bag o loot. My buddy took her down and held her until the popo arrived. Not recommended, but he enjoyed himself. Citizens arrest I guess.

He had no problems for this action, but his spousal unit was preturbed that they could face a civil lawsuit. Thankfully J. Money Cochran is rotting in a hole somewheres.
