From what I understand, the ceramic part of the spark plug is used.

I am on the same thought pattern as you are Nemo except, in an vehicle I carry a 9mm by my right leg with the idea that if I would be grabbed at a stoplight I may need to shoot through the door. If he has me by the throat I don't know if I would be able to get the gun up in the window with all of the arms and hands flailing around and I would just as soon he did not see it comming. Otherwise I also have a 12ga for home defense and carry a .38 snubby.
A door can easily stop a 9mm and even some .357Mag rounds depending on what part of the door you happen to enter. I personally tried this on junk cars to see what it would take to penetrate.
If my defensive strategy included the possibility of shooting a 9mm through a car door I think I'd try to find some +P ball ammo, like Winchester Rangers, 124 grain FMJ, 1,235 F.P.S. But try them out on a junk car like I.K. did first to give you some confidence in the round.I had thought of this as well. I guess that I would hope that the shock would be enough for him to release me or to slow him up enough so I can raise the weapon and shoot out the window. If all else failed I would just spray the door.
What kind of a defensive strategy would one find themselves in that requires shooting through a car door?
:shocker:
World's slowest drive by perhaps? Death Race 2000 spectator?

The discussion had evolved to a carjacking with BG coming from behind and smashing your side window...
...I am only here to learn.

Reading comprehension, again...kids these days, I swear..
Car-jacking. Very common, you might have heard of them in the news from time to time.. or seen them on your Playstation games. (GTA)
An entirely valid scenario to consider someday, when you get a driver's license (IF you get one).
As to the car-jacking posts- 2 things to consider:
1) 9mm.. unless heavy ball loads, or an incredibly thin/crappy Yugo's door- forget firing THRU the door. likely to harm yourself more than anyone outside the vehicle. In the event you do manage to get one to penetrate, aim higher than intended, as when it passes through the intermediate materials (interior plastic, window glass if rolled-down, exterior metal, etc.) the rounds will usually be deflected down/below point of aim.
2) muzzle-flash. folks tend to forget that, esp. when firing so close to themselves-such as you will be while seating close to steering wheel, etc.
that flash can burn skin/ignite clothing.
Only Barbara Streisand's negligee. There's a point-shooting drill of shooting across one's chest with the gun held the grip thumb's width away.2) muzzle-flash. folks tend to forget that, esp. when firing so close to themselves-such as you will be while seating close to steering wheel, etc. that flash can burn skin/ignite clothing.
shattering your windshield won't necessarily make it a hole, since they are laminated with layers of plastic between glass to prevent flying glass. Your other windows however, will probably fall apart.

Learning here is possible, but you must have a great deal of patience and get used to snide remarks from the peanut gallery.
