For the love of god, I thought NOT MAKING LINKS HOT was common knowledge for polls.

When you click through a link to another site, that site knows where you came from. It's called the Referrer.

The site running the poll can go back to look at their results, and see that all those No votes came from some "gun nut extremist forum", and then discount or disregard those results.

To avoid that, all poll links should be copied and pasted into the address bar at the top.

Might be wise if Internet polls held any scientific validity, which they don't.

Of course not, but since when does the general public care about crazy stuff like science, and numbers, and facts?

Well I'm in the general public and I care. Or am I an irregular public?

In this context, general public = non-shooters. Rephrased:

Of course not, but since when does the non-shooting public care about crazy stuff like science, and numbers, and facts when it comes to guns? Especially those tied to the media, where sensationalism is the MO that gets the money.
