I have to thank you. The absurdity of your post was quite amusing, and gave me a nice chuckle.

The ignorance of yours is not, sadly. Proper SIEM allows for fast identification and diagnosis of which type of DDOS attack (volume/application/protocol) your facing. Once the type of attack is known, remediation can be taken to counter the threat. If remediation were not possible, companies like F5 Networks, Cloudflare, and Arbor (along with others) wouldn't exist.

Today it was a web hosting network. Tomorrow it might be the electric grid for the eastern 1/3 of the United States and Canada. Do you have any idea how little difference there is in the efforts needed to take one down over the other?

TFred

Do you have any idea that you can't just tack on "terrorism" to any activity to justify murdering the people engaging in that activity?

Feb 2000 WSJ article discusses DDoS:

quote: These attacks all take advantage of the inherently open and trusting nature of the Internet's basic design, .... unquote

quote: The ultimate long-term solution, security experts say, requires new Internet software and hardware standards.... unquote.

15+ years ago IT super stars discussed the issue, offering recommendation(s) on how to mitigate the issue(s)...

horse is out of the pasture....course it is good for the IT equipment manuf, distributors, retailers bottom line.

SIEM - Security Information and Event Management commercial buzzwords Follow the money

If it was so easy then everyone would do it and CERT's would not be needed.

Nightmare - I stated they needed engineers who know what they are doing. I did NOT say it was easy. Kindly do not attribute statements to me that I did not make.

In fact, the reality that apparently they have engineers who DON'T know what they are doing shows that it isn't easy. Certification is wonderful - but it only proves a baseline foundation of knowledge. For those in the IT field, one merely needs to look at the 90's and early 2000's when many so called "IT guru's" were merely paper certified guys (MCSE anyone?) who had no real life knowledge. They'd go through a boot camp, pass a test (or a few of them) and suddenly be "experts". Certifying entities have learned from that and certs do mean more today. However, we don't know what certs the datacenter engineers may or may not have. What we do know is their level of skill and knowledge was not sufficient to rapidly remediate the problem.

See my edit above.

Yawn...

Oh wow - you feel so proud that you posted an ambiguous set of letters that could be shorthand or an acronym which I misunderstood your meaning over the internet. Really? That is what gives you a "Bwahaha!"? You might outta get out more......

Then again - your tactic of inferring a statement to me which I did not make reminds me of someone else on here who is all about "oneupsmanship" vs intellectual discourse. Apparently you have chosen to put yourself in that same category.

So have a nice day.

A few years ago, the latter-day equivalent of the Politburo decided there would be no internet connection in the executive meeting area. No connectivity at all.

So, why--exactly--is crucial American industry connected to a communication system that would allow hacking? Who is responsible for allowing that connection?

This is literally in line with the Gunny in Full Metal Jacket. "You know there is one thing in this world I hate, and that is an unlocked footlocker! If it weren't for _______ like you, there would be no thievery in this world!"

Your concept of TCP is faulty to the extreme, just a bit worse than the other poster above.

Linode DDOS Attack

OpenCarry.org is hosted by Linode's Atlanta data center which has been the subject of an intense DDOS attack since Christmas. We have seen slowdowns and downtime since then. Linode is working to correct the issue.

No wonder a proxy server doesnt work

Wow...... looks like one of the most opinionated people on OCDO has managed to provide a better answer than than rest of you. I hope y'all don't carry firearms with the maturity you discuss things. You'll give the anti's a national holiday!

The solution is to upgrade your PC to windows 10 ! Then all your browsing issues will disappear and you'll have time to go outside and watch the clouds float by...

Bernie is not delusional. Make no mistake, he knows full well what he is saying - and where it would lead. It is the people who support him that are either delusional (by thinking that world would be "better") or so badly "informed/educated" to think his solutions would be positive.

I'll give you that actually. He and Obama are trying to deliberately ruin the country. Obama should have been immediatly arrested, the first time he signed an illegal executive order and every Senator that votes for unconstitutional laws should be stuck off. As should Judges. Qualified Immunity the way it is now understood is a curse

Networking Security 101: Responding to Attacks

If nations, particularly their media, followed these rules, there would likely be no terrorism at all.

Rule #1: Never let them see you sweat. Doing this only lets the attacker know of his/her/their success. It only serves to further encourage the attacker and others. Instead of providing any details, just post a note somewhere that mentions "temporary service outages."

Rule #2: Never publicly acknowledge the attacker. Doing so only feeds the notoriety which the attacker craves. This thread isn't helping.

Rule #3: Cooperate with the authorities to the maximum extent possible. They can't take the bad guys off the streets without the computer forensics evidence required for lawful prosecution.

Rule #4: Understand that as customers, some network outages are caused by physical breakdowns, others by logic (programming) breakdowns, and still others by cyber terrorists.

Again, drawing attention to their activities in any way, shape, manner, or form only encourages them further.
