Does anybody know the firearm policy of the Simon shopping malls? After a group of juvenile wannabe thugs pretty much took over our local shopping mall one evening until the police could arrive in force, I requested specific information about their firearms policy in Virginia shopping malls. They refuse to answer and I can not see where any type of policy isposted on their web site.

What about the doors?

If they have a policy forbidding firearms, it would be a reasonable conclusion that if they want it to be effective, they'd have to notify the public, right?

Without a sign or anything posted notifying the public, it would be pretty far reaching to expect the public to follow a policy that wasn't defined, wouldn't it?

Therefore (I'm just guessing) I would say that, similar to ordinances and laws, something that wasn't explicitly forbidden would be implicitly permitted. If they don't have a "no guns" sign posted, I would conclude they are allowed.

As for their actual policy, I don't know. The only Simon mall I've patronized was in Illinois. I'm pretty confident about their firearm policy.

Our Simon mall in Aurora Colorado had it's No Guns Allowed poster in the back offices of the mall where 99% of patrons never go.

I only saw it because I walked my wife to the restrooms down that hall.

If it's posted by the doors you walk in, it's so small that I can't read it.

I don't read every sticker posted on a window before walking into public stores.

So I ignore it and have not been hassled to date.

In the absence of clear notification, it sounds like their policy is to follow local laws.

This probably falls into the category of "Don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to."

If you aren't violating any local laws, and you have not been informed to not carry, the worst that would seem could happen is that you be asked to leave.

IANAL...

Can you PM me the mall location? I have one in mind and would like to know more. If it's the one I'm thinking of, they have signs at the entrances stating policies, one of which bans carry.

I used to be a Director of Security in the Worcester, MA Simon Mall. While we had to develop plans for shooting incidents, there were no overall policies against carrying weapons. This meant that only the "gangstas" who carried illegal weapons were the only ones carrying. So my plan was to eliminate the groups of teens in the mall. The General Manager was somewhat against this, as he believed that even they would purchase products within the mall. I convinced him that all the groups did was to add to vandalism, assaults, theftsand drug problems within the mall property.

The nicer of the two malls in Montgomery in the eighties allowed loitering. They feared that breaking up groups of kids just hanging around would shoo away shoppers. The other mall maintained a security "presence" and challenged groups that seemed to be just milling around.

Naturally, the gang activity gravitated to the "nicer" mall. That mall lost its last tenant during the past year. It's still a beautiful building. It's just empty.

Sounds like my living room. Not neat or pretty but everybody is welcome. Go to the home where you have to sit up straight, use a coaster and don't touch the books on the shelf. Looks good in the pictures but who wants to spend time there.

Go ahead and put up those no dogs, no guns, or Irish allowed signs. I'll go down the street where I might have to pick up the debris by the door and put it in the trash can but I feel welcome inside its confines. Must be the country in me.
