<grin> You've never worked a show with Bruce Jackson, then, have you? Definitely not a sit-and-wait!

Have any of you thought of 'adopting' a gun store?

Go to the VCDL web page, print off and application, make copies, buy a display, put it in the gun store, and keep it stocked.

Are the employees at your local gun store members?

We have thought of that, and actually have been gathering material for a loop for a couple of years. The issue is cost.

Example: F'burg - Table is donated by the promoter (I think table cost is $55). 1 Power drop at the Expo Center would cost $155. And that means 6 memberships are required just to pay for the drop. (edited to add:) and that is just EPO costs. The promoter is adding nothing at that price.

Laptops would not last all day

and show coordinators would not want to lug batteries around based on the weight alone.

I just stand in front of the table and bark. It gets results. One Richmond show we got 76 alert signups in 3.5 hours (Then my voice gave out) and at the last Fredericks burg show we got 18 members the first shift (more than the total of the previous 3 shows).

I have been pushing setting up a table at some of the larger stores (Gander Mountain, Green Top, etc) as well as changing our presentation to show we include protecting hunting rights, ranges, ammo selection, and more.

What if we set up with local gunshops to enter anyone that buys a new gun with a 1 year membership in the VCDL. Maybe VCDL could set up a fund where when the gunshop or new gun owner sends in their application, the money is deducted from this fund? The activist members would of course have to donate to this fund, but something like this would increase membership numbers significantly in a short time. I used to work at A&P arms in VaBeach, and while I can't speak for them, I feel fairly confident they would agree to something like this. Heck all they'd really have to do is once the gun purchase is complete, they give the new owner a specially printed/stamped membership application that they then fill out and mail in. Pretty simple, we'd just have to fund it. Thoughts?

If membership is free (and at $25 it almost is now) it would have no respect.

Would be better to get them signed up for the alert. Now, if you wanted to put a VCDL Green Card in every gun case, that might have some value and costs a bunch less...

For those who are talking about free or reduced price memberships...

4 to 6 issues of the defender. Renewal notice (up to 2) and replay to renewal (with membership card). You are looking at about $10 spent on each membership. And that does not include the VA-Alert costs and postcard costs for the occasionalspecial mailings to members....

Sent this email to Philip -

A lot of things are being discussed on OCDO regarding recruitment for VCDL. http://tinyurl.com/5z75p7
My additional suggestions:

Family memberships: Husband & wife $40.00 = 2 memberships butcommon Va-Alert & Defender + minor children added for small additional - $10.00? Object is to get more involved and numbers up.

College student or active miltary discount - or supplemented as OCDO thread suggests.

Myreal exciting thought (for me at least) is corporate sponsers - would love to approach a bank and see a Friend of VCDL window sticker instead of the No Guns signs!

Phil and I spoke a few months ago about putting a VCDL application in the student manual we give to all of our students. I'm still willing to do that if the VCDL can supply me with the apps. With the amount of students we put through classes each month, I'm sure we can get a few memberships out of it.

You do not need Philip's approval to pass out applications and endorse/promote VCDL. Easy enough to just do it. Next time you are at a gun show just pick up a couple from the VCDL table and run your own copies.

Send a note to the Richmond (Central VA) show coordinator. She may be able to hook you up with applications.

Phil tried to drop some off for me one day but the drop off location was closed. I just need to pick up a stack when I think about it next.

I'm a college student and joined last April at the gun show. I've been thinking of posting some VCDL fliers up around the GMU fairfax campus.

I appreciate the offer but I think I finally have the money so I will hopefully be signing up next week. I wouldn't want to deprive someone else more in need of a free membership.

If you know any students who would benefit from membership, I'll pay for 4 and renew them while they're still in school.

ETA: That applies to you, too, NOVA. As stated before, let's try to get them down to Lobby Day. I'll drive, got room for 3 others comfortable, maybe 4 if they're close friends (4 door pickup).

I just boxed up a bunch and will UPS them to you on Monday. Time has slipped by and I simply never had a chance to hook up with you, Jim. :(
