That's a novel and common sense idea, but pigs will fly out of our butts before it'll ever happen. In military training, a handful of soldiers die every year in training accidents and accidents involving friendly (?) fire. The chance of even one firearm accident happening toa child in a government run social engineering facility would ensure thatgood common sense measures such as this one never get implemented. Nor will sound civics teaching, it goes against the grain of what the government wants the people to know.

Yes, I'm jaded and cynical. Who wants to join me for coffee?

I'm not saying we even have to put loaded weapons into the hands of children, there are several sims options, such as the miles gear given to our troops, or simunitions paint ball guns (oops...markers). The idea is education, and we all know how important the Dems think that is, "if it saves but one life". Most firearms accidents happen because of lack of training, every AD would be safe if the firearm was simply pointed in a safe direction. we really need to put the idea out that firearms education is THE solution, if after the training a person then causes a problem with a firearm we fall back to an almost forgotten idea....PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!

Can't have "Personal Responsibility". Ownership of failure is admitting that some people are winners and some are losers. We don't allow losers here.

Remember, everyone gets a trophy and is a winner because they tried.

Failure is not tolerated in the US. Everyone is equal so we all win.

I personally cannot stand the above philosophy. I'm a Type A personality. I am driven to achieve and to be #1 in anything I pursue. 2nd place is the 1st loser and all that jazz.

I've actually been told I should be happy with a less than perfect grade on school work.... because others can't do as well as I can and they have to struggle to achieve what Ireceived by less than perfect work.

This country is full or f&#*-ups, we really need to stop all the PC crap and start rewarding those who really deserve it. Both of my kids are A-B honor roll or better, and the idea that a child that barely puts forth the effort to pass should have the same advantages just because they're kids is B.S. I didn't get to be a success in business by dealing in mediocrity, and I don't expect anything less from anyone else. I started teaching my kids firearms safety when they were but pups, and guess what... not one accident in 12+ years. I can't make the world do my bidding until I get elected king (HA HA) but that's one of the first things I'd do, make every homeowner buy a firearm and then make them train, I just watched "The Patriot" yesterday, and all of his kids were proficient with guns.
Hollywood or not that's just the way things were back then, and we need to return to those basics.

SilentK-

If you are really 23, you are wise beyond your years. You give me hope for the future of this country.

Were we to hard on retiredeod? I did not think the responses were too personal or ugly. I would hate to lose a potential ally. Doug and MEM have never been shy aboutwhere they stand, in my experience. It is the fearful among us thatcreate tyrannical bureaucracies, not realizing what a mistake it is.

Conversingvia e-mail can be difficult. There is none of the nuance/body language/expression that can changeone's interpretaion of what is said.

The Luby's shooting and the story from the lawyer who lost her parents therecrystallized my beliefs in gun rights. If only a half dozen citizens could have taken him out when the threat was established. The Virginia Tech shootings, in such a tragic way, have reaffirmed my beliefs.

Be safe and good luck with OC in the great state of Texas

Where to begin? I am against any infringing of our 2nd amendment rights. Any. If someone is decided that they are worthy of being released back into the general population, they should have all their rights restored. That being said....this one burns me up.

The so called "retard" part of the argument. I am a disabled soldier who took a bullet in the head in Iraq in 04. I'd fit into the mental part of this argument as I have had shrinks tell me I shouldn't own a firearm and am a danger to myself and others. Oddly enough though, I have a respectable collection and have yet to do injury to anyone. I even carry a concealed handgun liscense (which I shouldn't have to have. I want my damned rights.)

When you try to protect civilization by attacking groups of people based on anything, it's dangerous. If my latest shrink told me that, if I admitted half the things to him I do, that he'd file papers to take my 2nd amendment away, I'd not go. And I know many soldiers like me. We suffer in silence to ensure the few remaining rights we have aren't taken by someone who "means well." To hell with any legislation that prohibits "retards" from exercising their rights. Afterall, how many groups would be after an organization for keeping that same "retard" from exercising their 1st or 4th amendment rights?

Many people change their ideas slowly. retiredeod wanted to be able to "agree to disagree" and still be able to work together. I think he would probably have listened to reason over time if he perceived the arguments to have been presented respectfully.

That said, I'll introduce myself: I'm from the DSA (Disarmed States of Australia :) and am encouraged by the existence of opencarry.org and other liberty advocating organisations in the US. I've been lurking here for a while and decided to participate after seeing what happened with retiredeod in the hope that I can make a difference by winning over some who think like him.

20 years ago you could buy longarms (but not pistols) and ammo across the counter here. Now it is quite difficult to buy guns legally and all sales must go through a registered firearms dealer. Self defense is not considered a legal use of firearms here anymore. Don't let it happen to you.

If I succeed in making a difference for you, consider making one for me: Write your federal rep about making the Bill of Rights a condition of military alliances and trade agreements rather than stupid copyright laws.

My own generation scares me. Many of them don't have a clue what is going on and if you try to explain it to them they don't listen. They don't believe it and more importantly they don't know the constitution.

When I was in the second grade the teacher asked us what we wanted to be when we grow up, my response was to become the President. Every since then I have kept up with government/politics/history and activism when I can.

I've been looking into running for State Representative for district 98. If anyone lives in this district please let me know.
