As I found out when I returned to college this spring as a "Non-Traditional Student", a term used for all of us old guys who aren't just out of high school, I found the college to be as far to the left without breaking the left wall. In fact, I was presented with material that (if I WAS the offend-able type) would not only offend me as a Caucasian who isn't playing for the other team, but found some instructors acted in the weirdest manners.
For instance, one professor locks the classroom door right at the start of class (not that bad), but also requires everyone to remove any hood, hat, sunglasses, or any other kind of head cover as they entered the room as a "safety precaution" he has used ever since 911. Ok, my response was not the inner monologue I intended on the first day, but I said "Oh Christ..." and was given a reprimand and a long speech given to class on my behalf.
And it's good to know that one thing on campus hasn't changed since I first walked onto campus in fall of 1988 as a freshman; if you are a white European male between the ages of 18 and fifty, you are the problem. I knew of it when I was 18 and in school because we got shoved through those race and gender classes taught by a teacher who thinks that if he dresses like he did in the 60's, they would come back and take him into the safety of his acid tab. But back then, I didn't care because I was A) young enough to think I could get away with most crap, and B) getting drunk and laid on a regular basis. What more could I need then?
We keep getting emails about dealing with perceived threats, how you can get the attention of either campus or city police at the drop of a sandal. What kind of actions in students we should be looking for, etc... Now that had me scared. Kinda.
I mean, I had driven to campus after a weekend by my folks and realized as I was sitting in class that I had a coffee tin of brass that had spilled out all over the floor of my truck (and come to think of it, one or two may have fallen out onto the ground as I got out of my redneck truck and raced almost late to class. So there I sat in English class talking about violence in the media thinking about all that brass. As twisted as it was, my main concern was that someone would grab it because it's so damn hard to find 45LC right now because of all the new Judge owners and I had to get them reloaded. It wasn't until I had it all picked up and I was at "home" that night separating brass when I figured out that I could have started a shyte storm for myself with the casings on the ground and all over the truck. And perhaps having more than one jack knife in my pockets, and a couple of magazines in the glove box. I guess I should be happy I left my 1911s by the folks.
But of course the whole point of this is that I got to see first hand how terribly brainwashing the whole college experience is, if you're weak enough to let it. A mass email sent to the entire college was about the upcoming elections and some links to information about the candidates. Let's just say that the links were either very slanted, or one side's links didn't work right.
Not that returning to school is all a bad experience. I mean I rush to the next city down the road every morning after dropping my boy off at daycare, thrashing through traffic on a rough 4 lane that's been under construction forever, trying to find a damn parking spot on campus after they close off a huge parking area for the construction of a new dorm, and have to head out soon after classes to get back home to pick up the boy and wait until the GF comes home so she can maybe help out a little. Then after everyone is in bed around 10 pm, I get time to do homework. But what makes it all worthwhile is this wonderful warm weather and they way attire conforms to the young female undergrads.
For all the crap I go through, that warm weather has become a good friend of mine.
