no carry or posess IF Loaded

Sec. 227c.

(1) Except as otherwise permitted by law, a person shall not transport or possess in or upon a sailboat or a motor vehicle, aircraft, motorboat, or any other vehicle propelled by mechanical means, a firearm, other than a pistol, which is loaded.

From the way I read this, it is stating that a person shall not transport or possess any firearm loaded, on these vehicles other than a pistol. Unloaded should be OK. Pistol should be OK. So rifles should be good to transport if they are unloaded. Just my interpretation and IANAL.

Oh Yeah, this is my first post although I have been a lurker for quite a while. No OC experiences as yet, but I support the cause. Have known Michigan was an OC state for over 30 years, but never taken that step yet.

Welcome.

Whats stopping you from going out right now to OC? Just a walk around the block, it's a nice day.

Nice thought... wish I could do that, but alas all the blocks I can go around at the moment are in this hospital as I am recovering from pancreatitis.

No place to hook a holster on this hospital gown.

18 U.S.C. § 930

(a) Except as provided in subsection (d), whoever knowingly
possesses or causes to be present a firearm or other dangerous
weapon in a Federal facility (other than a Federal court facility),
or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned
not more than 1 year, or both.

(d) Subsection (a) shall not apply to -
(1) the lawful performance of official duties by an officer,
agent, or employee of the United States, a State, or a political
subdivision thereof, who is authorized by law to engage in or
supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or
prosecution of any violation of law;
(2) the possession of a firearm or other dangerous weapon by a
Federal official or a member of the Armed Forces if such
possession is authorized by law; or
(3) the lawful carrying of firearms or other dangerous weapons
in a Federal facility incident to hunting or other lawful
purposes.[b/]

(e)(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), whoever knowingly
possesses or causes to be present a firearm in a Federal court
facility, or attempts to do so, shall be fined under this title,
imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.
(2) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to conduct which is described
in paragraph (1) or (2) of subsection (d).

(h) Notice of the provisions of subsections (a) and (b) shall be
posted conspicuously at each public entrance to each Federal
facility, and notice of subsection (e) shall be posted
conspicuously at each public entrance to each Federal court
facility, and no person shall be convicted of an offense under
subsection (a) or (e) with respect to a Federal facility if such
notice is not so posted at such facility, unless such person had
actual notice of subsection (a) or (e), as the case may be.[b/]
--------------

So if the entry into the building is not "posted conspicuously" then no conviction under (a) or (e), even assuming you exemption under (d)(3) is ignored as exercising you fundamental rights is not currently accepted by the federal government as a "lawful purpose".

As far as the NPS looks at whether your CPL is required that I don't know.

From what I understand, the park adheres to the rules for Michigan in regards to firearms... so OC without a cpl would be ok. In some parks, since the ferry service is operated by the park service (eg Isle Royale), firearms are not allowed on the vessel because the ferry itself is designated as a Federal Facility
see http://www.nps.gov/isro/parkmgmt/lawsandpolicies.htm

However, the Manitou Island Transit Company is privately owned and you would need to follow the law regarding carry as you would on/in any other vehicle. (MCL 750.227)

Thanks for the bit of info Dr. Todd, I'll just have my CPL friends hold onto it to/from the island and then strap it on when we get where we need to be.

Additionally thanks to everyone else as well who chimed in so far.
