A 55-year-old woman has been shot in the parking lot of Patrick Henry Mall.
She'd just gotten out of her car and was about to enter the mall when she had an altercation with a man, said Newport News Police Lt. Mike Grinstead. The woman was then shot in the right hand. The bullet went through her hand and entered her leg, he said.
The shooting happened about 7:10 p.m. during what police said was robbery attempt outside the entrance near Old Navy and Starbucks. The assailant ran off, police said. Two K-9 units searched for the man as onlookers gathered.
The woman was transported to a local hospital where she is in stable condition, police said.
The mall area was crowded with holiday shoppers at the time of the shooting. A section of the parking lot is roped off with crime scene tape, and crime scene technicians have been canvassing the area. About eight vehicles were within the crime scene, and the owners of those vehicles have been unable to retrieve them.
Newport News Police Chief James Fox, who is at the scene, said armed robberies are extremely rare at Patrick Henry Mall.
Yikes.
