A firearm in a side holster cannot be considered concealed, even if it's difficult to see by casual observation.

On the other hand, an unholstered weapon may be considered to be a threat, not quite brandishing, to be sure, but getting close to it.

A quick roll to the left and I can easily unholster my sidearm.

Food for thought...

I just leave it in the holster, sense I carry a Compact XD40 the seat belt goes right under my holster. I have a lot of room to get to it if I need it in a hurry.
(I drive an F-250)

I personally keep it holstered, I carry at about 3:30-4:00 and it does become somewhat covered by my seat belt. But I feel the more a firearm is played with the more likely it is to go off.

Great topic...

I typically keep my pistol holstered. I, too have leather seats, but have never felt that my sidearm would cause a problem.

Rough parts of town I'll lap it. But if I'm wearing my horizontal shoulder rig, my full frame 1911 is pretty visible, because I have a long drive to work and don't like being in a coat that long

Normally, I keep it holstered. I have a cubby in my truck that fits my holstered BUG pretty well, I have a holster that I rigged up just for this reason. I simply got some velcro and put it in the cubby, and on the holster. Works pretty good. :D It's the only way I get to pack my BUG around anyways, since it's too small to OC, and I'm not old enough to get a CC permit.

You shouldn't be playing with it in public, anyway. :p

I'm surprised no one has mentioned putting it under your left leg. Secure and easy to get to.
I'm right handed, so tuck my bug between the seat edges, grip up - its then directly beside my leg and under my right hand when my arm rests on my right leg in my RAM pick-up.

I'd have to give up my armrest in my Honda FIT. Oh, wait, that gave me an idea for an OC holster rig on the armrest itself....

When firing from the driver side as a righty, how far out do you need to lean to get a good aim?

Same as if you're a lefty, if your ambi. One of the reasons I own a CZ 85 B. :)

If you don't know or can't shoot one-armed from both hands equally well, LEARN. It really sucks to have one's right arm nerve severed by a lucky shot only to be totally defenseless despite a perfectly good firearm and a perfectly good left arm/hand, but totally useless due to lack of training.

This has been a great thread to get me thinking more about in-car carry options. (I did vote, by the way.) Most times, I leave my gun holstered. However, I really like the holster in this thread that clips underneath the steering column, although I'd want to make sure it had a reliable thumb-break.

With that said, I also maintain situational awareness while in the car and leave room between myself and the car ahead of me for a quick getaway if necessary. I keep a small can of pepper spray in the side door pocket and usually have it in hand when stopped at traffic lights in the Spring & Fall when my windows are rolled down. I also don't rule out using the car as a bludgeon.
