I am just curious if anyone has had this issue or not before sending my gun to Ruger(I am sending it anyways to remove the safety to make it a DC only). So here goes.

I usually get the Blazer brass or the UMC at wallyworld for 15 bucks a 50 pack/30-100, with my 10% off I get, but now they only have(if they have it) Federal Champion 230gr FMJ RN rounds. Brass if anyone doesn't know. Now I have shot Federal before...I use to use hydroshocks before my RBCD's so I guess I am kinda stumped with this. After buying over a case of this stuff.....not so happy. To the gun now:

Ruger P90, KP90 if you wanna get tech with it. For a few years I have put thousands of rounds through her and it never skipped a beat. It is a dinosaur and it has always outshot every gun aside from the 5.7 with no problems also. Anyone that knows this gun, knows why people buy this gun. You don't buy it because it because every other magazine advertisement is for it.

The problem. After 2-3 mags, for the first time I about cried. Every other round, almost everyone jammed. It would not eject them and had to drop the mag to get it out. The ONLY gun I have ever had do that is a M16, but that's expected(don't send me hate mail)...I have NEVER heard of a Ruger, any Ruger for that matter, just turn to garbage like that. Everything I hear about this ammo so far has been good thing. Putting 2 and 2 together....the P90 has a brick for a slide, and with cheaper ammo....not as easy to kick back as say a XD or Glock, or even one of the new Rugers.

Normally, I would get a new Ruger anyways, so possible I wouldn't have that problem. Not being able to say your gun has never jammed has really made me a sad panda, but I can't sell it because it was a gift from the wife. So after this long long post I would like to hear some thoughts of those who KNOW about guns. I don't wanna hear "should of bought a glock"....

Having in the past shot around a case of steelcase wolf and other ammo through it at a single time a few times...then going to this.....thoughts?

I had a similar, although not as drastic, issue with my Ruger in .40 S&W. I determined that the extractor--where it grabs the spent casing after firing--had worn down over time. Ruger sent me a new one for free, which I replaced myself--and I'm no gunsmith--and it has been fine ever since.

Should have bought a HiPoint (I'M KIDDING!)

IANAG, but it sounds to me like if you've put many thousands of round thru it, and only started getting problems when you switched ammo, that something is just plain ol' worn out (like extractor oly mentioned). Tolerances have loosened up just enough for cheap dirty ammo (making a big assumption here) to gum up the works. I'd say have it checked by a gunsmith or just let Ruger do it if you're sending it back anyway.

Hipoint...

Made me chuckle. The gun is in the same shape as the day I got it. It cycles my RBCD and other hollows. It doesn't look like the extractor is worn, but it could be worn enough to the naked eye enough that cheap ammo like that has issues?

I am just looking at options and possible retirement of this gun, even though we had another that has been shooting the same every weekend since 91. I am just happy it is a Ruger, because they like to make people truly happy. So I don't think I would worry too much, but more days they have it are days I am without. For now it's either this or a Vaquero...

I'll venture to say that while it may look so to the naked eye, it's probably not in the same shape as when you got it. Metal moving on metal causes wear, no matter how good the lube. Combine that wear of a few thousandths or ten-thousandths of an inch with a different ammo where something else is just a little different, and that might be your problem. Now if it works just fine with every other ammo except the federal, well then maybe the gun just doesn't like that specific ammo and you'll need to avoid it. Wouldn't be the first time someone has discovered that.

I have a Ruger P94 in .40 S&W. No problems at all, even though it's seen 15 years of shooting.

If you are sending the gun back to Rugerfor work anyway, I would senda description of the trouble you are having and ask them to look at the extractor and anything else that may cause the problem.

Also, as stated previously, it could just be your gun doesn't like the ammo you are feeding it.

If it's worn, Ruger will make it right again.

hello MM,

- I have a CZ-75B. I've owned it close to 20 years. Through most of it's life, it has been ultra reliable, eats almost anything i put into it. Hollow points from various brands, old military ammo, hand loads, etc. etc. I recently replaced all of it's springs with a performance wolf set.... However, prior to it's tune up, wife and i brought it to the range, and again, it ate everything in site...... except one brand of some cheep FMJ deals i got from walmart. I believe it was federal bottom shelf bargain FMJ too. Failure to extract was the exact same problem i had. I inspected the extractor and became concerned the weaponmight beat fault. Well, since replacing the springs (extractor was fine), i have not had a single issue again. I do however avoid the ultra cheepy ammo, unless i am intentionally training for stoppage.

~ Rugers are great guns, and yes ruger will take care of you, however, remove any custom parts, including springs, before you return any gun. Many companies will remove custom parts and springs, then return a gun in stock form for liability reasons.

- My suggestion: Field strip and pull the extractor, inspect it while it is out of the gun. Pretty simply, it'll be obviously worn, or not. Rarely extractors will sofly round and stop working (this condition will allow it to slip off the rim of the cartridge: usually ends up with the new round butting into the old empty case). This is can be seen if you have a small magnifying glass (or really good eyes) and good light. If your extractor looks good, it probably is. - That being the case, springs are a common upgrade in older guns, it helped my CZ-75 to run better than i ever felt it - sosmoooooth.

Check out wolf springs at http://www.gunsprings.com/-They are cheap, and will breathe new life into your pistol. I recommend a new extractor spring, recoil and mag springs. mine were one step up from standard strength. I think i paid about 30 bucks for the whole set.

- Ifyour rugerwas previously running good, and recently developed the trouble, and If nothing is cracked or visibly worn, chances are it was just the ammo. A new set of springs would be a yummy treat for a fine ruger.

-- I hope this helps :)

If you want, you can always buy my Ruger P97DC, it's in great shape and still eats whatever crappy ammo I toss at it. Actually got a free box of Blazer at a recent get-to-gether because that gun doesn't care. $350....

My P-90 fed everthing perfectly from day one. Dead accurate, ugly but like a tank is ugly. I'd suspect the mags before the pistol. Carried Hydra-Shoks, 230gr, before Federal came out with HST +Ps, which I now carry in my .45s. I don't recall a single incident with the Ruger of any kind--certainly not with Federal ammo. Check the mags.

After talking to gunsmiths and Ruger all morning......will be fixed with a set of new springs. My mags are brand new and work just fine. The ammo in question uses really crappy powder and so it has an issue throwing back my slide so it seems. Thanks for posts guys :D

So their solution is a lighter recoil spring?

Recoil spring isn't that bad, I believe it to be the hammer..It happens to be a lot "stiffer" than normal. After shooting more of those rounds I have noticed that shooting 15 rounds or so = a case worth of black residue everywhere. So combination of things it seams.
