Exactly why you should have a recording device

Also have a what if question. Do you turn off your recorders in a movie theater? I only ask because of the possibility of being charged with piracy. I know of the story of the OCer in AZ who won a case against some LEO's who pulled him out of a theater. I think a recording of the event would be helpful if something like that happened, but worry a charge might stem from the recording(unintenional of course) of the movie. I know it may sound outlandish just wanted some others thoughts.

The only time any recorder of mine comes on is when there is a potential for some encounter [LEO entering the area etc] or a problem arises with an employee...then when the issue starts the recorder(s) come on.

I believe that is the exact same model as my current gum-stick camera. Though I payed a little more and bought it from someone who had all ready imported it. You should be getting yours in 3 and a half weeks.

Doc

I just recieved the same one a few days ago. Works like a charm so far but havent had any encounters with it on yet.

Does anyone's voice recorders lock. I mean if I go and get one from Wally World is there a way to keep what is recorded from being erased. I know several have said they use there I-Phones which are password protected, I just wondered if voice recorders are the same?

I got an Olympus. Don't know how many Gb it holds but it will record for about 80 hours. Even longer if you use the voice activation feature so you're not recording a bunch of nothing.

The damned thing is so complicated it took me weeks to figure out how to delete a file. I'm sure no cop could figure out how to delete the file unless he has one himself!

just because some "cops" are ignorant with enforcing their opinions, doesn't mean that all should be made out to be retards technologically. just sayin...

A cop who is inclined to delete a file does not have to actually delete the file. Your voice-recorder can simply disappear.

This is the reason I advise against telling a cop, "I am recording this conversation." (where consent was not required) That, and no sense putting him on guard. Cops say the darnedest things sometimes. :)

AFAIK, MO is a one-party consent state.

As far as the recorders, if you're really going to make it part of your daily mode of carry, don't skimp. You wouldn't buy a crappy handgun, don't buy a crappy recorder.

Personally I carry an iPhone, which, in addition to making and receiving calls (emergency communications, even over WIFI w/ Skype) and carrying all my zombie-killing playlists (ok that is supposed to be sarcastic), it can shoot HD video with sound and has an integrated voice recorder. Can't go wrong. I'm sure the Droid is just as good.

obviously you're referring to the iphone 3 series...because if you're not...then you're lying about the making calls thing... ;-)

that is unless you're doing this...hehe

ROFL, that's a great pic

Droid has a nice recording app with a widget for my homescreen, takes < 3 seconds to start recording. I am still considering getting the one from hong kong just so I can have it clipped on my belt or whatnot. Did the 8 gb SDHC card work on the hong kong one? And how much video does that record?

Don't do it. Get a better one. I got the Hong Kong special, and it didn't work. And at $7, including shipping, it wasn't even worth sending back.

Why are you in need of a recording device?

Why is there always a need with you guys and recording all these incounters it makes people think you are just a bunch of sue happy rednecks looking for a quick buck. Oh I was detained be an LEO for OCing in Quik Trip. It does not make sence why you feel it to be necessary to make yourselves out to be arrogant a$$es to LEOs.

Someone help me understand why this is such a big deal with you. The more and more I read this forum the more and more I really think there is no hope for the human race. You all want to attack the Police, who from the hundreds that I have interviewed, love the second amendment as much if not more than you all do. They are not out to get you as some of you think. They just want to make sure that the city, county, state, etc that they work for is as safe as they can make it. Why begrudge them. Why must there be bias and a hidden agenda.

I want to write a store for the magazine that I freelance for, about OC. I will admitt I have LEOs in my family and so there maybe a bias on my part, but I am not trying to draft civil rights law suits either. So please help me understand the urge to want to stick to the man.

Spend some more time reading the forum.

Voice recorders prevent the police from changing the story, also known as lying. Personally, I don't carry one in order to sue. I carry one so that abusive police cannot escape correction or discipline by lying.

I have been seized five times by police since 2006. Three of those seizures were facially illegal. The other two immediately turned into fishing expeditions beyond the purpose of the stop. Only one encounter had anything to do with my OC. So, OCers are far from being the only people into whose face government sticks its nose illegally.

Who really thinks that a formal complaint will stick without either plenty of witnesses who carry some credibility beyond the normal Joe, or a video or audio recording of the encounter.

Bloody hell, I am tired of people whining about the "poor police" and "lawsuit happy OCers" and "OCers who are down on police." Goddamit, if we supply the incontrovertible evidence of a bad cop, we are doing the good police and the public an effing favor. If a bad cop has a good cop supervisor, the damn supervisor wants to know if the cop is screwing up and violating peoples rights! Recordings supply the certainty that gives good supervisor cops the evidence they need to support taking disciplinary action. Or, the courts.

And, never effing mind that all any cop has to do is not violate anybody's goddam rights and they have nothing to worry about. The police totally have it in their power to avoid the whole issue. If the cop behaves correctly then the OCer's recording will PROVE the cop behaved legally.

The references to lawsuits occur because frankly some cops won't stop unless they have the threat of a lawsuit hanging over their head. We've seen some really arrogant cops treat OCers with more than just contempt. There has been more than one jurisdiction where it took overt threats of legal action to make them knock it off. Again, police have it totally in their power to moot the issue simply by not violating anyone's rights.

Nothing personal, Wavereceptor. You are, perhaps just inadvertently, the latest in a long line.

Okay so you are one of how many people on this forum that want to weed out bad cops. Well have you ever thought that Open carry is not something that is brought up until someone is fired. The law does not state that it is legal to carry a gun, It does not state that it is illegal, but again it does not state that it is legal. Police officers are as the title Law Enforcment Officer would suggest, trained in what is legal on paper and what is illegal on paper. Since OC is not mentioned specifically then why would you think that is on the list to learn. So now when a police officer, good, bad, or indifferent, comes and harrasses for for sporting your S&W 44mag you immediately assume he is a bad cop. Or maybe he is just a cop wanting the least amount of issue where he is. Another gun means another issue. Not saying you are a bad person, but look at it through a LEOs eyes. I have had countless conversations about this with LEOs. I guess I am just a more objective person that some of my fellow Americans on this site.

Well having LEOs in my family I can see it thru a cops eyes. The guy who has a distinctive bulge under his shirt scares me i dont know if hes a criminal or a ccw holder, the guy that lets people see he has a gun dont scare me at all becuz a criminal is not gonna let u see he has a gun until it is in his hand.

What type of store are you wanting to write? Is it a grocery store, department store, automotive store or what? How does one write a store for a magazine?

Help me understand why cops are always out to stick it to Joe Citizen?

Why do cops have the attitude that they are the only ones that should be allowed to be armed either CCW or OC?

A good cop apologist should be able to explain those attitudes.

Please explain why cops seem to delight in viloating the MO Constitution that gives the citizens the right to BEAR arms.

Okay so you are one of how many people on this forum that want to weed out bad cops.

I don't think he's saying he wants to weed out bad cops, certainly not in the sense that he intends to start encounters in order to gain evidence against them. Seems to me he's in favor of recorders just to have proof (call it an impartial witness if you will) to any wrongful behavior on the part of a LEO if necessary. People lie about their behavior all the time, cops are no different, except that if a cop lies YOU can pay the price not him. Every encounter between LEO and OC'er has two sides and the recorder just backs up your side if things go sour. That's why police have dash cams these days. Why should it be different for the citizen?

Well have you ever thought that Open carry is not something that is brought up until someone is fired. Since OC is not mentioned specifically then why would you think that is on the list to learn.

Laws are not written to tell you or police what's legal, they're written to explain behavior that's PROHIBITED.
If there is no law against something then it's legal, plain and simple. Cops are trained in what's illegal not what's legal. Do they know every single law on the books? Probably not and I don't expect them to. But they should certainly know the procedures for checking and the standard of behavior while doing so.

So what are you saying, that harassment is something to be expected from all LEO, good, bad or indifferent?

Why should anyone expect harassment for doing nothing illegal? It's not illegal to shop at Walmart, so I should be harassed for shopping at Walmart? It's not illegal to drink coffee, so I should be harassed for drinking coffee at Starbucks?

If everyone had that attitude, would you be surprised that people would hate cops if all they can ever expect of them is harassment for doing legal, everyday things?

If the carry of a firearm is legal where you are, then it's as legal as shopping at Walmart or drinking coffee at Starbucks, period. I don't care about a cops personal opinion about it. It's his job to enforce laws not his opinion.
If he's decided he intends to enforce his opinion under color of law, well, that's where that lil recorder comes into play. Good cops don't try and use their authority to bully citizens into complying with their opinions. And no, I don't carry a recorder. As yet, I haven't felt the need. I guess when I run into a "bad" cop that'll change.

I carry a firearm for my own reasons. I don't do it to defend others or their property, that's their own duty. I don't carry to antagonize police or make "issues" for them to have to deal with either. If they know that it's legal, as they should, then there is no "issue". I don't mind being checked as long as it's being done with courtesy and respect. Cops with a courteous and professional attitude get my respect, those that want to act like citizens are beneath contempt, don't. Yes, it's a fact of life that bad apples make it hard on the good ones. That's true of more than just police.

The law does not state that it is legal to carry a gun, It does not state that it is illegal, but again it does not state that it is legal.

Can you please show me a law saying breathing is legal? How about a law saying buying groceries?

The way most laws work is that it makes stuff illegal.

I used to think like you. I didn't care about my privacy because I thought I have nothing to hide. However, even though I still have nothing to hide, that doesn't mean I should allow fishing expeditions.

Let's take 2 scenarios.

1. good, honest cop. I am OC'ing and store my gun in the trunk. The cop sees this and since starts asking some questions. Since I know I've done nothing wrong, I talk to him, open my trunk and let him look. While he's doing this, he checks my drivers license and discovers that it is expired and that the guy who borrowed my car had left a bag of weed in the trunk. I just opened myself up to all sort of prosecution. Not saying my expired license wasn't wrong and that the bag of pot wasn't illegal but technically, he had no RAS let alone any PC to talk to me, let alone search my vehicle.

2. Bad cop. I am OC'ing and store my gun in the trunk. I have my recorder going. Cop comes up and talks to me and I refuse his questions and do not consent to search. He forces me to give up the keys and opens the trunk and runs my license with the same results as #1. He denies I told him no. I pull out the recorder and voilas, the search is thrown out and the cop is disciplined. If that happens, I probably wouldn't file a suit. If the superiors try sweeping it under the rug, then I'd work on a suit.

I finally started to understand that rights should not be given up freely.
