I didn't have time to read through the whole thread, so others may have already warned you.
My oldest son, a former Marine and a police officer told me that if anyone offered me a Hi-Point for FREE, I should RUN, not walk, as quickly and and far as possible in the opposite direction. He said they are no good and very dangerous.

Hate to disagree with your son Greybeard but I've known people who have them and have shot a few (in 9mm not 40) and all have been ugly, heavy and unweildly but also unstoppable. They function great, at least the 6 or so I've shot! I've heard negative about the 40 but then the H&K MP5's won't run in 40 cal. at least not the ones our SWAT had! I had the 9mm Hi Point Carbine for awhile and it was a blast!

Don't know about the .40, but I have had a Hi-Point C9 (9mm) for several years, because that's all I can really afford, but I have put a lot of rounds through it and been very reliable and fairly accurate. I do use it as an OC weapon. It is a bit on the heavy side, but I'm large enough where not a major issue for me. Plus, as others have said, American made and lifetime warranty.

You need to make the choice

Read a lot, listen but when it comes down to it ,if price is a factor i like my HP. But i have not been shooting long so my word isn't much to go on. But when that BG breaks in or runs into you and you are so happy your saving up for that better gun,,, hell tell him to come back later cause you just haven't been able to buy your weapon yet.
Which ever you decide, it is your choice or i should say your fathers. No matter what you carry feel good you are exercising your rights and nobody should laugh at that.

After discussions with the friendly people at my range (Silver Eagle Group in Ashburn, VA) they said all their Hi-Point rentals are the most returned for breakage. Read: totally unreliable.

No offense, but they sound like the average group of gun snobs that hate Hi-Points for no reason. Most people will tell you how they've heard from a guy that goes to this range that met this one guy that had the rangemaster tell him about this one time that a hi-point blew up in their hands!! See what I did there? =P Gun snobs have gone so far as to saw the slide on a C9 in half and post pictures in forums saying that the gun blew up. I mean really, who does that?

Honestly, if you read the various reviews around the internet from credible gun magazines and bloggers, you'll see that hi-points always recieve great reviews and scores. There's even a series of Youtube videos that was only supposed to be one video...trying to run a C9 into the ground until it wouldn't fire, or blow it up. It took them 4(?) videos to do this, and just showed how durable those 'pot metal' guns actually are.

And yes, I own one, and will defend them to the death. They're cheap, efficient, durable, made in america, and have the best warranty.

well,,,

the hi point is the new american saturday night special!
it is an old design, made from cheap materials, and it is crude!
BUT they work well, and theyre guaranteed for LIFE!
the design goes way back to the quintessential saturday night special, the RAVEN 25!!
i have had a raven 25 auto since 1976!
it has NEVER FAILED!!!
high point is a VOLKS GUN!
a gun for the every man or woman, someone that needs to
defend their life, and their 2nd amendment right to defend their liberty!
many guns of all types come out of the box with problems, including hi points!
any gun with a problem needs to be sorted out and adjusted till it works right.
ive heard of kimbers that couldnt be made to work right!
ive never heard of a hi point that couldnt be made to work right.
ive heard of many hi points that came out of the box as excellent
and accurate, reliable shooters!
dont sell them short, cause, as they always say,
they are excellent for blunt force trauma.
