i live right across the tennessee line in kentucky, in kentucky cities and counties can't ban carrying firearms, if they even try they can face fines from the state. i was in lafayette tn. the other day at the city park, saw signs that banned firearms from the park. can cities in tn. do this?, if not who do i contact?, and if they can could i leave my gun in my car and be ok? thanks

Tennessee has state preemption, except that local ordinances in effect before April 8, 1986 preempt State law, per T.C.A. § 39-17-1314(a). Local governments may post signs per T.C.A. § 39-17-1359 to prohibit carry on government property, just like private property owners.

This is correct, except parks are covered under 39-17-1311. Actually unless the sign meets all the specific requirements it is not by the letter of the law illegal to carry in the park. Although our AG has ruled that you can be charged even if no sign is posted at all.

I would contact someone at city hall if you want to get this changed.
