Don't know where that linked jump in from wow

Which bear are you referring too the one shot with the 454 or the one shot with the 45
Hi point doesn't make a 454

Is Jim the guy with the 454 or the guy with the 45.

Sorry about the confusion, Jim is the guy with the Hi-Point .45 that shot the bear on Kenai couple weeks ago. I edited my post to clarify that.

OK, that's the one I remember reading with the .454 Casull. I personally carry my 12Ga with slugs when I go out and about in these woods. I'm not as worried around town (Anch, Eagle River, Wasilla, etc) but when we go out on a hike away from people, I carry that 12 Ga. I know though, that if the same thing happened (brown charging at 20yds) I probably would have to draw my pistol before I could get the shotgun mounted. One key thing is that he (the .454 C guy) said there were none of the tell tale signs. No huffing, no jaw popping, no standing to threaten. That's a scary bear.

I currently have a Glock 19 and am in the market for another Glock I want to choose between the 21 23 30 and 36 OR get the 26 to go with my 19 and im having a hard time picking one lol I know what the current prices are for 9mm ammo but what am I looking at for 40 or 45 ammo prices and what are the pros and cons vs the two?

9mm and .45 are the common pistol rounds. We have both.

Just like 5.56/.223, 7.62x39 and 7.62x51/.308 are the common rifle rounds. We have the first Two.

.22LR is good and cheap for practice if you have an identical pistol (and a rifle). We have both.

Shotgun - 12 gauge. Handy to have as well.

When ammo is in short supply, riots or other bad things happen. It's good to have backup firearms with alternate common calibers. Plenty of people to possibly trade with.

My wife has 9mm and she is small frame but shoots my xd45 fine.

It's all down to practice. The recoil on the .45 doesn't bother her at all.

Pistol-caliber choices are personal and everybody has an opinion. But opinion isn’t fact, and there is some misinformation out there that needs to be addressed.

Many readers are under the impression that U.S. special operations forces have returned to using .45 caliber pistols since the adoption of the M9 9mm in 1985.

This has some truth to it, but in most cases SOF units use 9mm, experts maintain.

I don't shoot the XD .40 or P90 often enough to be concerned about excessive wear issues. But, a 9mm may be in my future based on the availability and cost of 9mm. Also, a easier shooter for my DW than is the XD or P90.

Most good quality hand guns well go many tens of thousands of rounds the first 10 thousand well cost you 4000 dollars @20 dollars a box.

Reloading well bring that down to about 1000 dollars

Shooting enough to wear a pistol out is not cheap most never even get close.

If you have enough money to wear a pistol out you have enough to buy a new one.

I have one revolver that has over 50000 rounds through it and still going strong to replace it today some where in the 700 dollar range.

The cost of the handgun is cheap compared to the cost of the ammo it takes to wear one out.

So I'm talking to Jim (the guy who shot the bear on Kenai with the Hi-Point .45 in early July '14).

For the record he had Blazer FMJ in the Hi-Point.

ETA: yes, one of the first two shots killed the bear, but even after a fatal wound the bear ran off approx 50 feet before it died. That's important to keep in mind. The bear lived long enough to run 50 feet after essentially being killed. CNS, period.

Ok, good to know. Thanks for looking into it. From the news stories I've read, most bears do not drop when shot, so remember space is your friend.

There's a youtube video of a wildlife photographer who was charged by two grizzlies, and fired a warning shot to scare them off. Vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=401ATHqOCOg

Yeah, space definitely is your friend. Guy I work with now was charged by a black bear down near Portage Lake. The bear was between a group of campers and their kids and was moving toward the kids. He grabbed his 12Ga and ran at the bear waving and yelling. Usually a non-aggressive bear will just run off into the woods at that. And this one did, for a bit. The kids got back to their parents, but the bear turned on him when he was alone. He fired a shot into the ground right in front of the bear. The spray of dirt and junk in the face scared the bear off for good.

Pepper spray only works on non-aggressive bears. Generally a momma brown will run right through a cloud of pepper spray if she's worked up enough.
