I was listening to Michigan radio today and on "This American Life" with Ira Glass they had the story of Adrian Schoolcraft, a NYPD officer who recorded the day to day goings on in his precinct for 17 months. VERY INTERESTING. If they would do that to one of their own GOD HELP US ALL. Go to NPR.com and look it up. I'm sorry I don't know how to link it.

I'm a convert

There are some on here that say to turn it on as soon as you go out your door...... if nothing happens then just delete the file. I have the Olympus VN8000PC that has the USB port. the mike works great and has enough recording time to go the distance. Its stories like this one that has convinced me that you HAVE to PROTECT YOURSELF. Its a sorry state when our "protectors" become the predators. I truely don't mean to LEO bash but....take this for what it is.

Try this link to hear the radio story...
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/414/right-to-remain-silent?act=2
Below is the URL of the audio player of this segment....
http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/?play=414&act=2

The voice article is VERY long but the radio show is much easier to follow and after hearing it all you can say is...WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's chilling is when his own police buddies show up at his home, with SWAT, and forceably arrest him, get him committed for a EDP/Physc hold at a distant hospital basically "disappearing" him. Then when he quits, moves in with his father 350 miles away, he's still got NYPD cops banging on his door. AND IT'S ALL ON TAPE. You KNOW that if he answers that door they are going to gun him down in his own doorway. I hope he wins his lawsuit and gets every cent he's asking for.

I have a recording App on my Iphone. Once it is turned on, you can't turn it off unless you have the unlock code for the Iphone. I tested it out by starting at 100% battery charge and then recording. I recorded for 2 hours, and the battery was only down to 97%, so basically my only limitation is available memory. The Iphone I have has 8G of memory. I have about 3G of memory available. The 2 hour recording took up 157.52 MB of memory, so with the available I can get about 40 hours of continuous recording. Battery life looks like it would run out in about 30 hours. More than enough for any recording I would need.

How "unstoppable" is it if your phone is "dropped in your scuffle resisting arrest and gets stepped on"?

I just downloaded the app, and it looks like it has automatic upload capabilities, so even if your phone os destroyed, the recording is secure on a remore server.
Now that is friggin cool! I'll check it out in a bit to see how well it works.

I have a little Sony voice recorder I usually carry with me. It'll do several hours, and the batteries last for a couple of weeks. At home I use a wall-mounted camera that stores video on a remote server.

Other than smart phones, Is there a recorder that's portable that'll stream to a remote site? With Google Cloud Storage and Wi-Fi available in a lot of places, it should be fairly simple to design a device that records audi+video, and streams it to online storage whenever in range of wi-fi. Might not be as ubiquitous as 3/4G, but I'd be interested in buying one.

I use "Unstoppable recorder" on my IPod (not phone) and with it's Otter Box double protective case (hard shell case and then an outer soft rubber case, it would be pretty damned hard to damage to the point of destroying the recording.

I haven't done the math on max recording capacity or battery life but a 2 hour recording hardly dented the battery and with the 32 gig model I have there is no way I'd ever need that much recording time.

Also, I've done a recording while it was in my front pants pocket and while it the sound was muted, it was definitely of sufficient quality to be transcribed. If it's legal to record non stop in your locality just start the app when you go out the door and turn off the device. The recording will continue and who's going to pay attention to a phone that is turned off? If you also have your device passcode protected to open it, there is a double layer of security between anyone with it in their hand and the ability to stop the recording (if they even realize it's recording). Short of destroying the device (hard to explain to a court when it's in a protective case) there will be a record of the conversation where the device is located....maybe even while sitting on the hood of a cruiser while you're cuffed in the back seat as they discuss what charges to fabricate????

The application is also available for androids.

I highly recommend this app to anyone with a device that will run it.

I also highly recommend having TWO recorders if you're in a "high threat" environment. One that is a decoy so that they think they have THE recorder and the second that will hopefully go undetected (at least as being a recorder). This is particularly useful in localities (such as Oregon) where you must inform that you are recording.

iPhone recorder

Don't forget that the iPhone has a built-in recorder called "Voice Memos". I think it's better than the app mentioned previously in this thread because you can email or SMS the recording to yourself or anyone. The built-in app also runs while your iPhone is locked.

Guys, thanks for the info on the iPhone and iPod touch recorders. I use my 'touch only for pics and music while riding my bike. Had no idea I could use it as a recorder.

Thanks again.

Never kept one and no need for one, yet. Plus, I just can't afford it right now.

Average cost of a simple digital voice recorder at WalMart or on Amazon:
--$40

Potential cost of a run-in with an out-of-control power-freak LEO who wants to make your life miserable because he can't stand the idea that a mere "citizen" might have the RKBA:
--Humiliation in front of your family and friends
--Incarceration
--Physical abuse/police brutality/being tazed, maced, or beaten with a nightstick
--permanent damage to your legal record
--revocation of your carry permit and the ability to own arms in the future because of a bogus "weapons violation"
--possible loss of job, voting rights, professional certifications, and CHILDREN because of a felony conviction

How can you NOT afford a voice recorder?

For chrissake, dude, I live in Maryland where I can't carry at all outside my home, and I carry a voice recorder everywhere I go. Of course, I'm usually EHOCing (Empty Holster Open Carrying) but still, knowing what I know about the history of PG County, Howard County, Montgomery County, and Baltimore LEOs, anyone up here who DOESN'T carry a recorder is insane. Just operating a motor vehicle or even walking down the street at the wrong time can get you beaten, maced, tazed, and charged with "assaulting an officer" when you try to ball up to protect yourself from the brutality.

We are in the midst of a hostile takeover of our Nation by foreign corporate interests, who are militarizing the police, training them that anyone who mentions the Constitution or Founding Fathers is a terrorist, and brainwashing them to believe that EVERY traffic stop is a shootout waiting to happen.

The revolution has begun, brother. And Cameras and Voice Recorders are the "Brown Bess" of the 21st Century.

If you are exercising your RKBA, you simply have NO CHOICE but to also exercise your RKBR (Right to Kepp and Bear Recorders)...
