When to Protest?

When is it time to protest a business that has an anti 2a policy? I don't mean standing in front with signs, I mean, posting on a personal social media page, "XYZ business doesn't support open carry." or "XYZ has a firearm free sign, don't go there." or "XYZ has a no-gun sign, call them and say, 'as long as it's your policy, I won't be shopping there.'"?

Contacting the business is always a choice and a change in policy by the business to respect liberty is sometimes enacted.

The respective state subforums, here on OCDO, are a good place to start. A state level gunrights org may have a website with a "do not patronize" list and should be researched. Also, state level gun rights orgs may have more information, the business is already on a "do not patronize" list, or know of a currently underway effort to persuade that business to change policy.

Always attempt to rationally and reasonably approach the business in an attempt to enact a policy change. Many businesses enact a no gun policy out of ignorance or misinformation received from others, namely the anti-liberty folks.

When? By default. Tag them and use hashtags. Also let them know you will be putting their business on open carry websites and the members will boycott the business.

Here's why I am asking... there is a local business and one of the owners recently told me, she doesn't want guns in her store. I went on my personal facebook page and asked other 2a and open carrier supporters to call the business, giving the business number, asking them to change their store policy. I was very polite and professional about it, I even said she was nice, when she informed me.

I seem to be getting flack from other people, claiming to be "2a" supporters, saying such things as, that is her right, these are good people, some people will give guns a bad rap, it's harassment, too many oc'ers are asshats and carry because they think it's cute... things like that.

Shouldn't we call these businesses out on their liberal stance? Shouldn't local businesses be more scrutinized?

They know where the unfriend button is. If they want to be ignorant, that's up to them. Do businesses have the right to ban guns? Yes, just as we have the right to decide they don't deserve our money.

That tends to be my stance, and most of these people seem to be getting upset, thinking I am attacking them (the store owners), personally, which I am not. I am asking gun owners and 2a supporters to politely ask a business to change its policy. I don't see what is so hard for them to understand or why that is so wrong.

Don't ever expect everyone to agree with you. Of course there will be people who say your wrong in wanting this.

I don't care how nice someone is, or how great they are, how many children they saved, and loved by all... if they have a business that prevents me from carrying my gun for self defense purposes in, then I will not go there, and I will tell everyone I know that they shouldn't either. Its not personal, its about me not forfeiting my rights to enter someone else's property. Do these people think the criminals who want to rob them or kill people there will abide this policy and not bring guns? I can understand not wanting guns in your store, but unless you can actually prevent it, they don't need to disarm the legal carriers only.

Immediately. I would make sure that it is actually the company's policy to do what they are doing before protesting, though. A lot of times, managers of corporate stores will make their own policy that goes against corporate's policy.

Here's a good site: Friend or Foe: Pro/anti gun rights database

the discussion has been made out on this forum many many times:

it is private property ~ they may do whatever they wish to do, even exclude those who carry.

you have tried by posting your thoughts on FB as well as talking with the proprietress of said establishment (BTW you did check to ensure this individual has control over establishment policies didn't you? if not shame on you as you have gotten personal advice instead of correct establishment policy )

otherwise, shop else where! you wish them to put up signs to make it official, i am sure they will oblige your request.

a sidebar, this establishment or it's employees may have a negative history in their past centering around firearms and the sight 'could' cause a legitimate discomfort.

i notice with interest you did not name the establishment, mom & pop, national chain? local chain?

...tried by posting your thoughts on FB...

Yes, do this. The only time I had a really negative encounter at a nation chain store, I posted the experience on FB, and the VP of sales called me personally to discuss the issue. The next time I went to said store, the same manager saw me, did a quiet sigh, and carried on with his business.

would presume one has a FB page...there are some who like some semblance of autonomy and do not feel the burning desire to project every moments activities for the world to see and record.
