When children ask why you have a gun?

I'm in a tourist area. 50/50 maybe the person talking to me is from Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, or Minneapolis.

I start off with the premise that it is a genuine question and go from there. I don't really think the best starting point is "I have a gun, and I'm a jerk." Maybe there is a time to go there, but not the place to start. With children I would say it is 100 percent a genuine question. If parents see me treating their children with respect, it might be the difference of them treating me with respect? Who knows?

I say I'm 1000/4 good/bad encounters in 5 years. I talk to a lot of people about the gun on my hip. The 1000 just means "a lot", but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm close to 1000 actual conversations about firearms. I just about always have my dog with me when I walk, as I'm out to walk the dog. 1/5 conversations probably mention a gun, the vast majority don't say anything about it. I suspect a different state, or a big city might have different results. We're a pretty strong gun/hunting culture here.

When I met PrettyInPink, I was introduced at the time to a 5 year old little girl who is now my stepdaughter. We were walking into a store, and as the three of us crossed the parking lot, the little one tugged on mommy's pants.

"Why does he have a gun?"
My better half let me answer. "To protect us from bad guys."
Shortstuff visibly pondered this for a couple of seconds, looking off into the distance. I could see the gears turning in her head.
"Oh, okay."

End of discussion.

The responsibility of being a parent/step parent is awesome and is its own reward. :)

I am getting to the age when it won't be that many more years I am able to Protect the family.

What I am doing now is getting the next generations ready. I am currently helping two of my older grandchildren get their LTC's in Texas. Maybe I will still be able to also help the youngest ones.
This year the spread will be from 25 to 3.

my grandson is 7 and he hits me with this sometimes
i think he is just wanting to challenge me and sometimes he is just repeating things he hears

for the most part I say: "there are bad people and dangers in this world, and i carry a gun incase they try to hurt us. I carry to protect you and me. "

he usaually takes that

I tell my daughter the same thing. There are bad people in the world that might try to hurt us and I'm not gonna let that happen.
