"UNLOADED" Open Carriers at the Ashland Town Center

I saw two different people today carrying their firearms openly at the Ashland Town Center, but one thing was odd about both... they were both carrying their firearms empty, with no magazine in the gun.

Was this anyone here?

I had to ask myself what the point is? Anyone that carries a firearm openly in Kentucky while the firearm is unloaded seems to me like they are just trying to make a point. Could these people honestly be so unfamiliar with the law that they believe they must carry like they do in California? Why would someone carry without at least knowing the basics of the law? What good is an unloaded gun if you are honestly carrying for self-defense?

So, was this anyone here?

Not me, brother. I carry my Glock locked and ready to rock:p But no, I don't see the point. It's like sitting in your driveway in a brand new fancy sports car that has no engine. You should have asked them.

I had my little one on my lap eating yogurt or I would have. I looked for them when we got up to leave but I didn't see them anywhere.

The people beside me made a statement that firearms were "against the law in a mall" which I quickly corrected them on.

I can't count have many times that I hear misquoted laws. I'll fully admit that prior to OCDO that I didn't know dip about laws. I'm still learning, but prior to then if I didn't know, I didn't pretend like I did or make up something on the spot. It seems like every shift we talk guns at work. Not complaining but just this morning a newer guy here was telling me about how to carry in a vehicle without a CCDW. He stated that your gun had to be X number of "motions" away from you, yada yada. I have heard this number of motions law quoted several, several times. I have no idea if this was an old KRS or what, but I can't find any old laws even close to this.

I had a 21 year old girl tell me a while back that she thought someone was trying to break into her house in the middle of the night. I asked if she owned a gun and her response was "wouldn't that be illegal?" I asked if she was a felon or in any way barred from owning a firearm and her answer was "no." I then asked how in hell she thinks that I can carry one on my hip for the world to see? She said that she had never thought about it. In her mind only LEO's and criminals were "allowed" to have guns. Never crossed her mind that LAC's have a RKBA.(at least in KY)

On a more positive note, when I came into work this morning I found a letter from another agencies employee. The employee wanted me to look at their firearm policy to see if it complied with 65.870. While reading the policy I get a call from a co-worker with a travel question. (this is what sparked the number of motions convo with the other guy) Sometimes I know by heart what the law says and sometimes I look it up just to be sure as to not give any bad information. Either way I have somehow became the "go to guy" on gun questions. No expert by a long shot but still kinda cool I suppose.
