One of Amazon's top-selling electronic gun safes contains a critical vulnerability that allows it to be opened by virtually anyone, even when they don't know the password.

The Vaultek VT20i handgun safe, ranked fourth in Amazon's gun safes and cabinets category, allows owners to electronically open the door using a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone app. The remote unlock feature is supposed to work only when someone knows the four- to eight-digit personal identification number used to lock the device. But it turns out that this PIN safeguard can be bypassed using a standard computer and a small amount of programming know-how.

why oh why would anybody purchase a small handgun container with bluetooth capabilites...

course the real question centers around what bad guy is going to spend time playing with SW codes on their ‘MAC’ trying to figure out how to open something that can be discreetly slipped into a bag, taken back to their hideout and smashed open with hammer and screwdriver to get the firearm..

oh wait, screw it, smash the container w/hammer & screwdriver where you found container then run like the devil with the firearm in hand...

me thinks some people’s children have way too much time on their hands if they believe this is productve work!

What I find funny is that most combination safes can be opened with a key, even the electronic ones. The key is supposed to be a fail safe in case the electronics fail. So my question is, why not just get a safe with a key lock, which is what I have. Any safe can be opened with enough effort, angle grinder will get through the most expensive in about a half hour. A safe is a deterrent, but in the privacy of your home when you are away the thief has plenty of time.

Not only that, these electronic locks don't survive a fire in the home even IF the safe does survive. You still can't get in after the fire.
