I have put off getting my CHL for a number of reasons. One of the biggies is that I feel that it is a violation of my rights and a way for the gun grabbers to know who to go after first!
Now I am in a quandary. With our new president elect I am afraid that getting a permit is about to get more difficult so although I would like to ride out until after this next legislature to see if we get unlicensed open carry, I am afraid that by waiting I may be 'shooting myself in the foot'.:banghead:

However, I still have the natural fear and reasoning behind not wanting a 'permit' in the first place! And my fears for that may be even a little stronger now!:uhoh:

I guess what I'm asking is if you feel that the results of this election will have (1)an effect on our state legislature and (2) is there truly a risk of the current procedure for CHL becoming more difficult between now and the end of our state session?

Also, any other thoughts?

I voted get it now. The way I see it when we get open carry in Texas we should still need a permit to conceal carry.

Although I don't necessarily agree with you on principal about needing a permit at all, I can respect your position on that. But my point is rather to the principal that I would simply rather not have a permit and therefore would be willing to OC at all times were it legal.
Anyone else?
You can vote without comment if you would like.....
The results of this are likely to have an impression on my decision within the next month or so....

I also do not believe that we should be required to go thru training and permitting, but this is Texas. Do you really think that we would have CC now if the legislature had not been able to tax it? I believe that we will eventually have OCbut we will be taxed for it. That is just reality.

My option isn't on your poll.

Get a non-resident CCW from Florida, or some other state that has better customer service, better turnaround time, and a better attitude towards gun owners than the Texas DPS does.

Your name still goes on a list, but not in the state where you live. Also, if you're a military veteran, Florida accepts your DD214 as proof of firearms training, no further training required. (Please bear in mind that you are still responsible for knowing and obeying Texas law, of course)

I am an NRA Certified Instructor and Range Safety Officer, and in Florida any of thehandgun safety courses I teach satisfies the Florida state requirement for training. I lived there for ~16 years, and just moved back to Texas in January of '07.

In Texas, in order to be qualified to teach the Texas Concealed Handgun License class, I mustattend a 40(!) hour class and pay $50, which only qualifies me for a year - I have to renew every year and give up some vacation time to do it. I actually considered this when we moved back, but I didn't know about the other drawback - the DPS only teaches the class once a year, and you have to commit early in order to get a seat, and by the time I found it was too late to do it in 2007. So this year, guess what? The DPS Instructor course coincided with the State Republican Convention. I was a delegate, so I went to Houston to take part in the political process. And have since decided not to bother becoming a Texas Certified CHL Instructor.

I'm not impressed with the way Texas handles its CHL program. I'll keep my Florida CCW.

I have been putting it off for quite some time as well, but I plan on getting it next week. I do like the idea of getting a non-resident CCW from Florida instead.

I have a couple of friends that teach the class here in Texas....
I had not thought about getting a non-resident permit from a 'friendly' state that would allow me to carry here.... I am (very) interested in knowing more! I will likely be in Austin next weekend for the Gun Show there, will you be around?
I am off to San Antonio today for a 'Welcome home from the Sandbox' BBQ!

I was under the impression that if you are a Texas resident, the out of state non-resident licenses were not valid. If a Texas resident, you must have a Texas CHL. Is that not correct?

No, it's not correct. Texas honors certain licenses, and doesn't care where the licensee lives.

OK, thanks for the update. Arizona doesn't allow that. If you are a resident of AZ, youcan'tuse an out of state non-resident license. With all the extra requirements for a Texas CHL license, I'm surprised they let you get around it like that.

Yep, Texas has not made me feel welcome to carry concealed, nor to teach the course. Seriously unimpressed with the program, coming from Florida.

If you're willing to consider other states, please shop around. I haven't bothered to check which state has the best one simply because I already have my Florida CCW.

It just happens that I used to live in Florida. They were one of the first states to have a 'shall issue' CCW, and they have good reciprocity, they accept proof of military service to satisfy their training requirement, and they accept NRA instructor credentials as sufficient to teach firearm safety.

http://www.carryconcealed.net/- check out their reciprocity map! And then verify the information on the respective states' websites.

Sorry, I'm booked solid for this weekend, but maybe we could hook up another time - probably after the first of the year. However, everything you need to know about the Florida CCW is here: http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/weapons/index.html

Enjoy the BBQ, and the Gun Show!

Like I said, if you're willing to consider other states, please shop around. I haven't bothered to check which state has the best CCW/CHL license.

Things to consider:

- How much does it cost?

- How long does it take for the license to be issued once you've satisfied all the requirements?

- How long is the license good for?

- Which states honor it/grant reciprocity?

- What are the training requirements?

Agree wholeheartedly. Being taxed to exercise a right is downright detestable.
