Greetings,

I am seriously looking into either an XD40 or an XD9 subcompact for daily carry. I was wondering if those of you who own one would give me your honest thoughts on it? Specifically I am looking to know if there are any FTF problems or rust issues. (I've heard some of the XD's are rusting like crazy, true or no?)

Thanks so much!

(If you want to comment on Caliber, go for it, I havn't decided, but I'm not intending this post to be about caliber- just about the XDsub line)

I have had my XD9sc for a few months, about 1k rounds, and it is hands down my favorite handgun, period!!!! I am more accurate with it then any service size handgun I own or have owned. I have not had a single mechanical issue with it, FTF/FTE etc. It's the only gun I carry now, even open carry, which I used to reserve for larger sized guns.

Finish seems fine. I read they changed the finish in 2006, not to the Melonite finish that is on the 45 but it's not the Burinal finish that was used prior to '06.

Get a Pierce grip extension for the 10 cap mag and you will be good to go.

Welcome to OCDO!!!!

I have put thousands of rounds through my XD9 subcompact. I have never had problems with defensive ammo, but with some target ammo, I have misfeeds (well, whatever you call when the slides comes back to quickly and catches the brass).

I clean about once every few months, and never had problems until I have been to the range about 10-12 times. I usually go though a couple of boxes of target (100/box)and one box of defensive (100/box).

I am usually shooting at least once a week, sometime more if I can schedule it around the kids - cannot wait until they are taller than the shelf...

I also have little problem if I us Winchester target ammo, it is the Atlantic and Wolf that seems to give me problems (they are a lighter load).

i have an XD40 and i carry it daily and use it as my competition gun. I've only ever had one problem with it and that was the cause of a low end magazine that was bent causing the bullet to feed into the side of the slide. needless to say the mag found the circular file. i love my xd other than that one failure and its got several thousand rounds threw it and hours of competition with that one problem is an amazing testament to quality. I've had more problems with my 1911.

Hey Thanks everyone for the input, I have given this a great deal of research and I think that I will go with the XD subbie. Now, I just have to decide on caliber...If only they made a 9mm conversion barrel for the XD40SC.

Thanks for the warm welcome VAOpencarry!

Both are excellent. Rent them and find out what you like. I love 40cal and my wife likes 9mm. I carry a Glock 27 only because I got it for a great deal. I went to buy an XD. I got my wife an XD 9.

I bought the SA XD SC 9mm because it was a good deal (bought it lightly used for only $450. I went with 9mm because I am thinking of getting a 9mm carbine in the future and it is a less expensive caliber than .40.

(Note to myself- write Springfield Armory asking them to do a 9 mm carbine based on the XD so mags will be interchangeable. That would really get people goingif they saw me open carrying a carbine, ha ha! As long as it was under 20 rounds, I would be legal in Virginia!)

I am not a heavy shooter (200 rounds or so of theWinchester target, 20 rounds of the Winchester SXT JHP personal defense to make sure it works) since I bought in May.

I like to keep my gun lightlyoiled on the exterior so it will not rust. Never heard of the rust problem though.

Take good care of your gun and your gun will take good care of you!

One more question regarding the XD40 (.40 in general, sorry it's a little off topic)

I have shot plenty of 9mm, that's my current gun (SW9VE) Anyway, I heard that .40 can sometimes be too much for the gun and cause explosionsor something of that nature? Any truth to that, or just BS? Forgive my ignorance, I only have experience in 9mm and .22LR.

I have the XD40 SC that I OC in a Blade-Tech holster. I got it with 2 mags/case/holster/tact laser/light for about $575 shipped and FFL'ed. (Edit: I meant to specify that it was lightly used as an off-duty weapon - I picked it up via GunBroker. A heck of a deal.)

We have put a couple hundred rounds through it and I'm absolutely in love with it. It has an amazingly natural point of aim and great balance. It fits my small chick hands perfectly (hehe), and I suspect would be equally great for a man who chose to invest in the 12-rd. extended magazines. (The only complaint I've gotten from the guys who have handled it is that the grip is a bit short for man hands.)

My boyfriend prefers shooting it over his Beretta 96 (the .40 version of the 9mm service pistol he carried in the Marines for years) and I just really can't stress how happy I am with it. I have had zero problems thus far - oh, and I feed it Winchester target loads.

I really recommend the .40. You only lose a round or two of capacity over 9mm, which you can basically get back if you get the extended mags. You will be amazed at how little recoil you'll actually experience, and how easy your second-shot acquisition will be. This gun has sold me not only on the .40 round, but also made Mike and me HUGE fans of the XD line. Our next handgun purchase is likely to be a full-sized XD.

Enjoy it when you get it - and as for rust, like someone above me said, take care of your gun and it'll take care of you! We clean after every trip to the range, even if we put just a few rounds through it, and keep it lightly oiled with Break-Free CLP. No problems here.

BS.

I have a H&K USP in .40 S&W that I bought new in '98 and have probably put 10k rounds through. I don't believe I've ever had a single problem with it and it has definatley never gone KB.

I just bought a Glock 23 that was former law enforcement. God knows how many rounds the former owner put through it, but I've already put about 500 through, and it shoots like butter too.

The .40 round does have more powder in it, so when it goes bang you feel it more than a 9mm. It was enough that my wife doesn't like shooting my guns, and distinctly prefers a 9mm. My advice would be to find a range with rentals and try the same (or very similar) guns in the two calibers and see what you want. I would be amazed if any decent range that did rentals didn't have both the Glock 17 and 22 and/or 19 and 23. I'm not saying try it for the sake of trying a Glock, but just that the difference in caliber can be quantified better by using the same body gun for both tests.

FWIW, YYMV, IANAL, But I did stay at a Holdiay Inn last night, etc. et. al. ad. infinium

Goodnight. :)

I used to own an XD-9SC, for concealed carry. And I still currently owna XD-45 Tactical. Both XDs performed flawlessly with any ammunition I fed them. The XD-9SC had just under 3K rd through it when Isold it, and is nearing 5k now according to my friend, who has not had any issues with it either. I never encountered any finish issues with either gun, but I did/do keep them very clean. XDs are remarkably accurate and natural to shoot, well ahead of any other polymer pistol in it's price-range. Plus, as several torture tests have shown, the XD isat leastas durable as any of them, as well.

Go to a rental range and shoot them, and if you find that it fits you, buy with confidence. I would still have mine if an acquaintance weren't insistent on buying it from me after shooting it... I was hoping, also, that SA would introduce a SubCompact model chambered in .45 GAP, like my other one...

Well, I'm off to a rental range today to trya sub.40. I hope they have the XD40, but we'll see.

However, I think I am going to go with the XD9SC, mostly for cheaper ammo, and because I already have a 9, I can share ammo with the two. We'll see though, it may change.

Thanks everyone for all the info and comments! I'll let you know what I choose in a week or so when I make the purchase!

The only way I can think of that a Glock would have anything resembling an explosion would be if one fires reloads through it. Glock barrels have less case support than most, and in the area lacking support, the case can weaken and/or bulge. Reloading and firing this weakened case can result in such an event, causing damage to the weapon and likely injury to the shooter and anyone else in the vicinity. No reason why factory ammo can't be well tolerated indefinitely in either the XD or the Glock. I have never owned an XD, so I haven't done the research, but as far as I know, they don't have the case support issue that the Glocks do.

I own the xd 45acp service(4") as well as a xd 9sc. I love both guns. I used the xd9sc 100% for my off duty carry. then when I got my xd 45acp I have been using that as both duty and offduty carry. I find its well consealable when needed. In my use of either guns I have not had anyproblems, no ftf fte or anything like that. the finish on both is still great with the 9sc comming to three yrs of service and the 45acp 6monthes. keep em clean and oiled properly(to much is as bad as none) and thell out last any of us.

this summer I dropped my xd 45acp in a mud puddle while hiking(stupid me forgot where I positioned the holster) and it still shot fine, yet when i got it home it was very very dirty and stiff to cycle. bit of oil and cleaning and vuala(err how ever you spell that) like new.

any xd is a good xd, man all the options.......
