Look up "frog levitated by magnetic field."

Or, I could be a real gentleman and.....

http://www.physics.org/facts/frog-really.asp

EMP is a threat to gizmos. The detonation that generates a EMP is a threat to humans that use gizmos. Beyond the detonation hazard zone, humans are good to go. Their gizmos? Not so much.
I shall "keep a weather eye" for flying frogs, and do my best to avoid them. They will certainly not infringe upon my ability to OC, any more than the EMP which imparted to them that avian attribute would. However, in all likelihood they probably will create a significant hazard to navigation. ;) Pax...

EMP if it was so easy then everyone might do it.

Nightmare, you might be surprised just how likely an EMP attack on America is.

Understand that an EMP attack isn’t some wacko conspiracy theory or terrorist daydream, but instead people in the highest levels of government have studied and reported on this threat.

In the year 2000 the U.S. Congress established “The Congressional Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack.” And 4 years later, in 2004, the committee produced a 70-page executive summary on the EMP threat, and then they finally issued a final report in 2008.

According to the report,

“Several potential adversaries have or can acquire the capability to attack the United States with a high-altitude nuclear weapon-generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). A determined adversary can achieve an EMP attack capability without having a high level of sophistication.”

The delivery method of such an attack is not nearly as complicated as you might think. Intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) are extremely expensive, highly technical, and only available to a few nations, and, as mentioned already they can be tracked. But there are several other delivery methods that are readily available. In fact, it might be the simplest part of the entire thing; certainly much less so that acquiring or building a nuclear weapon.

Understand that an EMP attack is not a surgical strike. In fact, it could conceivably be hundreds of miles off course when detonated and still cause the same level of damage. If multiple weapons were used to provide overlap, accuracy becomes even less important.

This could be accomplished using a high altitude balloon, a jet aircraft (such as a chartered business jet), or a medium range missile launched from a ship in the ocean in international waters.

If the methods above seem farfetched, understand that I’m talking about a “simple” nuclear device. It does not require a complex targeting system based on GPS satellites, a military aircraft, or any other type of specialized delivery system. Balloon delivery and chartered jet are within the range of virtually any terrorist group. This is not science fiction or conspiracy theory. It is well within the realm of possibility. The weapons and the delivery systems already exist, both are already present in America today, and there are plenty of groups who would be happy to employ them.

Iranian Shahab-3 missiles, SKUD missiles, and others are candidates. The Russian-made SKUD missile has a maximum height of about 124 miles which is definitely high enough for an EMP burst. North Korea has bought at least 500 SKUDs from Russia. And North Korea has their own similar missile, the Taepo Dong-1. North Korea has shipped over 400 of these ballistic missiles to the Middle East. The biggest buyers were Iran, Iraq, Yemen, and Syria, but also include Egypt and Libya.

Islamic terrorists could fairly easily buy several of these missiles and launch them, armed with nukes set to detonate upon reaching a critical altitude, from a ship in international waters off the eastern seaboard coast, the western coast, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The ships could then be blown up with everybody still on board and sunk to the bottom of the ocean to further hide the source. There are many millions of Muslims who believe that 70 virgins will be waiting for them in heaven if they die as martyrs for Allah. So finding some towlheads to man the kamikaze boats wouldn’t be much of a problem.

And they wouldn’t even have to use their own boat. The EMP attacks depicted in the novel, “One Second After” are launched from missiles hidden in shipping containers loaded on container ships.

After the book was released, a Russian company started advertising missile launchers hidden inside 40’ long shipping containers made for launching from such ships.

Known as the “Club-K Container Missile System,” Morinformsystem-Agat JSC began marketing this stealth missile launching system in 2010. Their four-missile variant fits inside a commercial shipping container. By loading these containers aboard trucks, trains, or merchant ships, rogue nations and terrorists could launch a successful EMP attack on America using this method.

Watch this video about the Club-K:

http://www.military.com/video/guide...lub-k-container-missile-system/2932801006001/

Please read those last two frightening paragraphs again and think about it for a while. Only 2% of the containers that come into the ports are inspected. The rest remain sealed as they are shipped throughout the country. Such a doomsday container with a short-range nuclear missile hidden inside would have a 98% chance of being shipped into the U.S. without being detected.

And consider that A Russian company is actually selling shipping containers complete with multiple missiles inside and tops that hinge open, and that the Iranians have recently practiced launching ballistic missiles from ships, an EMP attack may not be as far-fetched as you think.

We live in a crazy world with a lot of crazy people, many of whom hate or have a score to settle with America. To me it feels like we are waiting to see which crazy person is willing to push the big red button first. Some, I’m sure, are just waiting to get a big red button to push.

Few people imagined that terrorists would do what they did on 9/11. Today few Americans can conceive of the possibility that terrorists could kill off up to 90% of our population by destroying everything we rely on that runs on electricity.

It isn’t a matter of “if” but instead a matter of which terrorist group or rogue nation will be first to hit us in the “Achilles’ heal.” An EMP attack would target America’s deadly weakness in spite of our overall strength, and would cause our complete downfall.

In general, EMP's are more disruptive than they are destructive, having their greatest immediate impact on the electrical/electronic infrastructure.

Actually, an EMP attack on America would be the single most destructive thing that could possibly happen. It is true that an EMP wouldn't directly kill a human, but according to an official U.S. government commission, approximately two-thirds of the U.S. population would die from starvation, disease, and societal chaos within one year of an EMP attack. It would be a disaster unlike anything we have ever seen before in world history.

I personally believe the death toll would be more like 90%. Only ranchers, some country folks, and survivalists would be able to survive. There would be as few as 30 million people left alive in America within the first year.

A single EMP over the central U.S. could potentially fry most of the electronics from coast to coast if it is powerful enough. This could occur in a couple of different ways. If a powerful nuclear weapon was detonated at a high enough altitude, it could produce an EMP large enough to knock out all electronics across most of the country. Several smaller bursts could cause the same level of destruction. So YES altitude does matter. A nuclear device detonated at just 120 miles high would blanket the majority of the country with electromagnetic radiation.

We live in a world where technology is absolutely exploding and we are dealing with threats that previous generations never even dreamed of. As the world becomes increasingly unstable, it is inevitable that these kinds of weapons will be used. It is only a matter of time before the U.S. gets hit with a nuclear EMP attack.

It is time to relocate out of the big cities. And to stock up on ammo, guns, tactical gear, long-term storage food, water, winter and summer camping equipment, and everything else you'd need to survive without electricity for years !!!

Have you taken your own advice?

I live on a small 20 sq. mile remote, isolated, rural and impoverished Island with scheduled access only by ferry.

(snip describing extensive preparations)

If you haven't already bugged-out, it's too late, someone is already there.

(snip)

Nightmare, first let me commend you for your excellent wisdom in having made such extensive preparations and for your choice of location and neighbors. I mean that most sincerely. Some aspects of your set-up really impressed me such as the ferry access.

As for me, yes, I've been into preparedness for about 17 years now. I'm about as prepared as I can be but I'm a lone wolf and I'm old and disabled. My chances of surviving the coming collapse, state of Martial Law that will follow, and the coming WWII for very long is not that great, despite being an expert in survivalism with extensive emergency medical experience.

As for your comment about it being too late, I only partially agree. It takes many years and a considerable amount of money to be truly prepared, but some is better than nothing. I'd strongly encourage everyone to start stockpiling food, guns, ammo, gear, etc. ASAP despite the lateness of the hour. I thought we were going to see the economic collapse in 1996. I'm quite surprised it has gone this long. At best we have maybe two to three years left, but complacency will get you killed.

As for your comment about somebody already being at your bug out location, I suppose that depends on what part of the country you live in. I'm in rural northwest Montana and there are huge area of National Forest and Wilderness with virtually nobody for many miles. If you are equipped enough and tough enough to handle the harsh winter weather here, other people are one of the last of your worries.
