A man who broke into a Georgetown business Thursday night was shot dead by a store employee and a second intruder was held at gun point until police could arrive.
Very glad that the employee was not harmed and I am curious to know the business owners stance on firearms.

On the surface a good tale of self defense.

Employee working late, store was closed and bad guys (2) broke in and were confronted by employee. Store in bad neighborhood. Employee defend his person, shooting one bad guy and refraining from shooting the other, called police and waited with 2nd bad guy at gun point. No over the top heroics, simple self defense.

Nice job to the employee. (Worst the employee did is 'violate' a company policy. But a small business is unlikely to have any detailed policy. More than likely I would guess the owner would be ok with an employee CC closing up shop in a bad neighborhood.)

Outdoor power equipment store, I would expect the thief was stealing the chainsaw,,, and, IMHO, a new chainsaw chain is more of a weapon than any knife...Not that the employee needed an excuse.

Follow up...

STORY

Awakened by breaking glass at about 11:20 p.m. Thursday, the employee got his legally owned gun, went into the store office area and confronted a man carrying some chain saws, presumably from the store, according to the court document.

The employee told the man to stop. When the man, later identified by police as James Stapleton, 46, reached for his waistband, the employee feared for his life, raised his gun and fired one shot, according to the document, known as the suspect-information report.

Everything about this story seems like a by the book case of self defense.

Thursday, the employee got his legally owned gun

Phew so glad he didn't get his illegally owned gun....(sarcasm)

State law also says homicide is justifiable if an individual using deadly force is lawfully defending himself or another person from someone committing a felony or someone who presents an imminent danger.

Something we have discussed at length here.

I am just glad the guy is OK, and hope the surviving crook has learned a very valuable lesson and has a change of lifestyle.

Deceased criminal history emerges....

STORY

James Stapleton, who had a long criminal history spanning several other states, also killed someone in a Georgia vehicular homicide case for which he was convicted in 1999, according to police and court documents.
Stapleton, 46, had convictions for attempted theft in Nevada, DUIs in Washington and Georgia, assault in Pennsylvania and burglary in California. Between 1987 and 1996, Stapleton had at least three assault convictions, according to court documents.

Looks like he reaped what he sowed. Eventually his lifestyle was going to catch up to him.

Even without the history the store owner/employee did the right thing.

It was refreshing to read a story about a citizen shooting to defend himself and only needing one shot to do so. One head shot and the show was over. A lot better than those stories that we read where "several shots were fired and nobody was injured".

Also refreshing to see that there is one less "repeat offender" consuming oxygen.
