If I had to have one gunappear in my hands during an assault, It would have to be the 1911, specifically one of my Kimbers. This is assuming I had to actually fire the weapon to save my life. In the event I was not going to fire it, I'd like the relative safety that a heavier D/A trigger pull would provide, so that I would be less prone to accidentally shooting it. One can argue the points about not aiming at anything you don't intend to shoot anyway, but defense situations are dynamic, and just seeing the gun pointed at them might cause them to stop their attack, thereby saving your life without a shot fired.
Still, if a shot must be fired, and I'm the one who has to fire it, I'd feel much more comfortable with my 1911 than anything else. Between my two pistols, I have fired over 4,000 rounds at paper targets in the last 12 months. Makes for repeatability. I haven't been to the range for several weeks, though, so I'm probably a it rusty. It's not like riding a bike, you have to maintain shooting skills. "Use it or lose it."
Between my other handguns, Ruger MKII's, PPK/s, they are great fun, but not what I'd want for protection. Still any gun is better than no gun, IMHO.
