Sig or 1911?, if your life depended on it.

I was having a discussion/disagreement about this with someone, so I thought I would ask the the knowledgable members of this group for thei opinions. Any 1911, Springfield to Wilson or whatever. I will reiterate this is if your life depended on it to go bang when the SHTF. Not ergo's or functions etc. Feel free to comment on your choice. Thanks for participating.

Random 1911 vs any SIG, I'd go with SIG. An optimized 1911 would however get the nod over a SIG.

I'm a HUGE Sig fan so the choice was easy for me. The Stainless steel Sig .40 caliber 229 is what I trust my life to now. I know that without a doubt, it will go bang every time. I've only fired less than 500 rounds through this Sig but my old Sig 228, I put 1000+ rounds through without the slightest bit of a hiccup. They may not have the ability to add as many accessories, mine doesn't even have a rail, but for SHTF situations, I'd trust my life to a Sig before anything else. Even my Taurus 627 (357) has a tendency to jam when the cylinder gets dirty or when I don't crimp my reloads good enough. I don't carry reloads for personal defense for that exact reason but still. When my life depends on it, I'm reaching for a Sig. I doubt I'll ever change my opinion about that.

I can't say that I have had much personal experience with either, but I think I would choose the 1911. 70+ years of rugged reliability for the U.S. Armed Forces andthe stopping power of the .45 ACP round help to sway my vote.

I would only like to point out on thing wrong with your poll. Sig makes a 1911. I trust my life and my the life of every one in my family to a Sig. Combat proved and they live by their motto : to hell and back! I always have my P229R HSP on my side. For you that dont know, thats the Homeland Security Pistol.

1911 with a couple of dollars thrown at the appropriate spots.
Mever had one fail to go bang yet... and I know you said to leave out ergos... but it points so natural for me... and I am so used to them... that reflex pointing with other pistols makes for wild flyers for me if I dont take the extra second or 2 to adjest point of aim and find the sights.

First off, my lifedoes depend on my sidearm... And I wouldn't carry one that I couldn't depend on in any situation, from combat-zone to my front steps.

With that said, I voted 1911. I have carried both 1911s and Sigs (and I would buy and carry a Sig 1911 GSR in a heart-beat). It is easier to conceal a compact Sig, hence the P239 which accompanies me much of the time, butmy full-size SA1911 is a slightly more effective tool for armed conflict because of it's long sight-radius and consistent trigger-pull. I wouldn't feel under-armed with either, but if the SHTF, I would reach for the 1911 first. That would be true of any caliber, whether comparing a.45acp 1911 to a P220, or a 9mm 1911 to a P226. The only exception, in my mind, is the advent of Sig's new SAO 226s and 220s... Those would seem to level the playing field sig-nificantly (couldn't help it).

My 1911 is very noticable. Why even worry about pulling if you can stop 99% while just walking around. BGs are likely to move on if they see you carrying. My friends sigs are not noticed as often.

Now, for CC, I'll take a sig (type). Smaller, hides better, and is easier to pull from concealment.

So I guess the answer is yes - Sig and 1911.

I was looking for the third option - anything I can get my hands on if my lifed depended on it!

OK, I guess what I am really getting at is reliability. I have never owned a 1911 but have heard more than enough from others about 1911 'issues', though they still love them. On the other hand Sig has a stellar reputation of reliablity.

I have600 rounds through my Kimber with no cleaning (I know, bad gun owner). I am trying to get to 1000 before cleaning, just to see.

I did clean after ther first 500 and did not have any issues.

I keep track of what I shoot at the range. I go through 50 or 100 in the 1911 each trip. Depending on how much I can afford.

I think you hit on the problem with 1911s. They can be very reliable but often they need to be broken in and may need tuning. SIGs may only need to be broken in and more often than not work fine right out of the box. So between 2 NIB weapons I'll take the SIG. OTOH if it was Jeff Coopers personal 1911 or my own Kimber and a SIG, then I'd feel comfortable with the 1911.

Just to be clear. My Kimber 1911 is out of the box. All I do is load it and fire. I have cleaned it once. I have never had any issues with it. It works fine.

I still do "clearing" drills and "jam" drills, but so far, nothing has gone wrong.


Now you guys have got me worrying about something going wrong.

Sounds like you got a good 1911 there, but I would clean it. I wouldn't want the first failure to be when you need it most. 500 rounds is a pretty good run without failure, I would be satisfied with that kind of reliability.

I voted for the SIG. I have a small collection (8 I think), 3 of which were purchased new, the rest used. After thousands of rounds, the only failure of any kind involved reloaded ammo purchased at a gun show that was improperly sized. The cartridges were too large and got stuck in the chamber. Needless to say, I don't buy reloads anymore. From a reliability standpoint I think the SIGs are hard to beat right out of the box. Even some other posters to this thread who voted for the 1911 qualify their support by stating that they mean a broken in, tuned 1911. Not taking anything away from the 1911. Its a great platform. But for a dead bang reliable handgun, I'll take a SIG.

How about one of the Sig 1911s? The original GSRs with Caspian frameshad some issues but I have yet to hear a single bad thing about the newer GSR Revolutions that are being made entirely in-house.

Every one is stainless (the black ones are a coating over stainless) with a match barrel, trigger, and hammer/sear set. Zero MIM. Low-profile Novak's tritium night sights standard. Checkered front (25 lpi)and back strap (20 lpi). Really sharp looking wood grips. A more comfortable grip safety that matches the grip when depressed. It comes dehorned out of the factory at no extra charge. Two Novak's magazines (they fixed the issue they had a few years back with the cracking feed lips). And it's all yours for *drum roll* $1,050 MSRP (and we all know we don't pay full stir anywhere any good).

I'm seriouslythinking aboutgetting one as a "Range Queen" gun, myself. Looking at the price and the stuff it comes with (especially the dehorning because I so hate kicking my/my clothesa$$ with my new purchase :cuss I don't see a better buy anywhere in the 1911 market.

I'd take a 1911 any day, i shoot much better with a single action trigger. Also I trust the reliability of the the design. My carry gun, a Para LTC, fired and fuctioned flawlessly right out of the box and has yet to experience a malfunction of any kind. It served our country for decades and I trust it will do the same for me.

I am fairly ignorant about firearms performance (I wish I coudl talk about guns like I can with my elcamino and engines and shit... ) so what exactly do you mean by thrown in the right areas? Or shoudl I start a new thread with performance questions like this?

In the senario you describe, the PLD (projectile launching device) is less revelant than the caliber, velocity and design of the projectile combined withaccurate shot placement.

That said, I would be most comfortable with the PLD I use most proficiently; My XD45Tac.

I don't yet own either a 1911 or a sig.

The SIG gets the nod from me. I carried one as a duty weapon for years, instructed with it and also shot combat style matches with it. I'd bet my life on the gun...along with my skills, that is.
