I sent an e mail to Majority leader Fritzgerald on SB589 and got a response from senator Vinehout. her standard is is it reasonable... Wow what a way to make us second class citizens...is it reasonable..

here is her letter. I'll answer her tomorrow, but your thoughts are appreciated. SB70???

In looking at this type of bill, I would use a “reasonableness” test. What is reasonable for parents and community members to expect with regard to adult behavior permitted on school grounds?

Most parents would want anyone with a weapon in the parking lot to be immediately investigated and the school to be on lock down until the threat had passed. It is reasonable for parents to expect only law enforcement would carry inside the building.

It is also reasonable that parents would be able to store their concealed weapon locked in a vehicle trunk outside school grounds.

Preserving Second Amendment rights are vital. Carrying on school grounds requires an approach that balances Second Amendment rights with what is reasonable for the school community.

I’d be interested in your thoughts on the bill. I have heard mixed opinions about the bill from conceal and carry permit holders.

I don’t expect this bill to pass. The Speaker in the Assembly is opposed to the bill and has said he is not bringing it forward.

Thanks for writing,

Kathleen

"Reasonable" could be a valid query to ask AFTER this one: How does this proposal/bill impact Constitutionally Protected Rights?

ETA: After reading the complete posted letter: Suggest changing firearm in this context to "fire extinguisher".... Is it reasonable to only allow certified firefighters to possess or use a charged fire extinguisher on or in school property/buildings or Should we EXPECT all teachers/administrators and many adult visitors and even children to be able to lawfully use said extinguisher in the event of a fire? VS having the fire extinguisher depressurized or locked in a trunk of a car in the parking lot!

A candid and sensible reply by Senator Vinehout. SB589 is currently possessed by the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety and is not on Thursday's calendar as Nik Clark had hoped for. Low priority.

Good argument.

It is *not* reasonable to subject otherwise law-abiding moms and dads across this state to potential felony charges simply for picking up or dropping off their kids from school.

It is *not* reasonable to assume that all parents drive their kids to school and therefore have a safe place to secure a firearm carried for self-defense while walking through questionable neighborhoods.

It is *not* reasonable to expect parents to pull over outside of school grounds, unholster their firearm, unload it, and encase it all before driving onto school grounds - and then do the same in reverse after leaving again.

The mere presence of a properly holstered firearm is not a "threat", just ask various courts who have opined on this very subject.

It is reasonable for parents to expect only law enforcement would carry inside the building.
On duty and off duty, or on duty only. Cops are people too and break the laws as can anyone else.

State Senator Kathleen Vinehout (D-Alma)...all ya need to know.
