S&W 340PD

I'm considering purchasing a S&W 340PD. I was hoping that someone had an opinion on this particular gun. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this gun, here's a link - http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=14765&langId=-1&isFirearm=Y. Basically, it's a J framed, 5 round .357 magnum weighing in at an unbelievably light 12 oz's!!! Now I've looked around and can't find anything in .40 caliber or above that weighs anywhere near that little! The closest that I can find is a GLOCK weighing in at around 19-20 oz's. Now I've shot this little bastard and it straight up hurts to shoot. However, I'm looking for a deep CC piece and I'm just wondering what y'alls opinion is of this. The chances that I'll ever need it are slim to none but if I do ever need it, I don't want to be missing the target 4 out of 5 times from flinching. However, on the other hand, you can't beat 357 power in a package that's light enough to forget that it's even there.

The pros of this gun is that it's a very light 357. The cons are that it's a very light 357.

So what's your opinion?

I've got one. Very tiny.

The accuracy isn't the greatest, but it's great for concealed. As a matter of fact I got it for the pupose of concealed carry, but since I got it I've been mostly (stirring the pot here in Pittsburgh) carrying openly.

Kicks like a mule, but I've shot 50 rounds out of it at the range. Unless you're a girly-man you can take it.

Don't tell me you shot 50 rounds at one time!?!?!? I wouldn't consider myself a 'girly-man' but I don't think I could handle shooting 50 rounds at one time out of this lil monster.

Oh yeah, I just remembered that I've posted another thread on this forum that dealt with this particular gun. Sorry.The focus on that thread was whether to shoot 38's or 357's out of it. I'd like this thread to focus on the gun itself and whether or not it's a good CC piece for the ankle. Basically, it's either between the 340PD and an XD40 sub-compact. Thanks again.

Yes, at one time. If you hold onto it you're fine.

I let a younger fella shoot it off at the range, he put one round out of it and opened up a cut on the back of his thumb.

"Ummm, son, I told you to hold onto it. What did you think I meant?"

It was my first handgun, so it is the baseline by which I judge all others. I got used to shooting 38's out of it. I have some slightly larger rubber grips by Crimson Trace on it, which helps. I can shoot 100 rounds of 38 in a day no problem. .357 is a whole different ball game. I always finish the day w/ magnum, and seldom load it again for another 5! Don't trymagnums in cold weather without gloves!

Do you you remember the gun "little cricket" from the Men Men in Black movie? Thats the 340PD w/ magnums. But I love to feel the power on occasion.



The part is in an ankle holster it doesn't move at all and you forget it is there.
