Last night I had to file a police report. The responding officer was Deputy Brantingham of the Silver Springs substation. After the report was filled out, I asked him how he felt about citizens open carrying handguns. I don’t remember his exact words, but he basically stated he didn’t much care either way, and that he took an oath to uphold the Constitution and that included the Second Amendment. He advised me to keep an eye out for “No Firearms” signs at businesses (which I already knew about and know they carry no weight of law), as I could catch flak from them for carrying in their establishment, and he didn’t want to see that happen.
Overall, he was very nice, very professional, and basically gave a “Thumbs Up” to the OC community.:)

EDIT: He also suggested that, due to the nature of my report, that I get my CCW so my prints will be on file.

Sounds like all turned out well.

I am having a problem trying to conceive of how, because of the nature of a report you filed, it would benefit you to have your fingerprints on file? I am always suspicious of comments like that. My belief is the less the government knows about you, the better off you are. I'm not one for permission slips either.

That's a good encounter. Just remember, that's one guy. The next deputy may not feel the same. I don't look to LEO's for validation. But it is nice to hear one support the 2nd amendment.

I OC and have a CCW. It's worth it. I like the options it provides me. I never have to sneak through Federal Gun Free School Zone's.

Well, let's see... I don't know where to start here. You actually called the police to file some kind of report. I'm thinking it probably is never a good idea to call the police for anything. You may be lucky that when "they" arrived you weren't somehow suspected of a crime and taken into custody... that happens a great deal when cops are called. And, the responding officer was "very nice, very professional..." etc. Well, isn't that just peachy? And even better, he advised you that it would be a GOOD? thing for you to have your fingerprints on file with "the government." Yeah, I think you should run right down to the police/sheriff station and do just that... time is a wasting.

The report I filed was for Identity Theft. I did so on the advice of the IRS (who initially told me about the issue), and the FTC. The deputy suggested the prints because someone is out there posing as me, and the prints would help as an identifier. I told him I'd take it under advisement.
I understand that I don't need permission to OC. I also understand that that's only the feelings of one officer. In my small rural community, though, I can only hope that the feeling is at least shared by some of his colleagues.

Haha...seriously though, I hate that my fingers are in the system. Part of being an immigrant. Maybe I can just acid them off my hands.

Umm...when was the last time you were required to give your fingerprints to open a bank account, get a credit card, apply for a loan, or receive a driver's license?

Are police departments across the country really going to be dusting all the application documents for all of the above, to make sure nobody is falsely claiming to be you?

I fail to see how giving the government your fingerprints is going to reduce your risk for further identity theft at all.

In regards to officer's comments about OC, that is positive.

I think, but am not sure, that his reasoning may have been that with all of the documentation one can fake, fingerprints cannot be altered except for sanding them or acid. If it came down to two or more people claiming to be one person, fingerprints are the one to "seal the deal" short of DNA.
Like I said, I took it under advisement.
I don't see the cops dusting every document, but now that my SS number is flagged and credit locked, anyone who claims to be me and has forged documents would have that much of a harder time if they get caught trying to talk their way out of it if their prints don't match.
I doubt I'll be printed anytime soon, though.

There are good reasons for filing reports...such as this OP's. I had a firearm stolen from me...so I wanted it on record that it was stolen, so when the jerk that stole it commits a crime with it, they don't come arrest me. I have record that it's no longer mine etc. Hopefully nobody else disagrees with the OP's reason for doing a report about his id being stolen.

I have a ccw so my fingerprints are on file. When my firearm was stolen, they printed my place to try to find the burgler...at that time they took elimination prints from me. I suggested to him that they were already on file...and the CSI didn't care. He said they(the lab) just took them, and didn't look up in their system to use my prestine prints from my ccw. I don't get how some police are all like 'hey get your prints with us', but then when you're like 'hey my prints could help out, they're on file' they're all like 'nah...we'll print you again'

I too was a victim of identity theft. in 2005... people backed a pickup truck thru the side of the DMV building on Donovan and stole all the computers, My info was on them The Secret Service contacted me, put a seven year hold on my credit (royal pain in the A$$) They also told me to never hand my Diver License to anyone... (try that at a traffic stop, Or getting into court etc.)

I came out of the experience believing two main things.
The less the Govt. has about you the better. (would have been better to fight giving them my ssn)
Do not ask for advice from someone who has no interest in what is best for you!
