"The most seriously wounded victim, Dan McKown, had pulled his own gun and told Maldonado to put down his weapon when he was shot and nearly bled to death. He's still mostly paralyzed in one leg."

If you are going to pull your gun, you better shoot. It is unlikely the criminal is going to stop because you told them to.

That whole story is pretty close to home for me (about half way between Spokane and Seattle, and yes, I remember the original trials when they were news.

My comment: If someone else is already shooting, let your weapon do your talking for you. A pistol is nothing against an automatic rifle so you need to be quick about it. When we were ambushed in Vietnam we were told to go on the offensive, it worked then, I made it back, It should work now.

I'm wondering what positions the two were in when our GG called the BG out. Face to face? At a "T" position? GG at BG's back? Were they moving or static? Was the GG not committed to pulling the trigger, or did he think his GG Gun and polite request would ward off evil?

I agree that once powder burns there's no Mr. Nice Guy. OTOH if I'm waiting my turn at Wendy's and the guy two up from me announces a robbery with his back to me, I wonder if giving him the option of a hasty retreat would be the best solution.

BG: "This is a robbery! Gimme the money!"

GG: "Drop it and run, or I will shoot!"

I would have to disagree. There are way too many things that could happens if you give a BG an ultimatum. He could start shooting, take a hostage, shoot you, etc. I think the best option would be to draw and take the shot, saying nothing, so long as you fear for your life or the life of another innocent person.

If they're armed with a firearm, there will be no warning, as most humans with a reasonable amount of practice can act faster than most other humans can react. He who shoots first wins.

If they're armed with a knife or other deadly non-firing weapon and fairly distant, I might give them a warning i.e. an opportunity to try something really stupid before responding appropriately i.e. with lead. If they surprised me and followed instructions to the letter (drop the knife, lie down, hands over your head, etc.), they might just survive. I'm not taking any chances, though.

Remember, in the original story, the guy was already shooting up the place. No need for warning if he is already shooting.

I don't see the point in giving a verbal warning, whether he was already shooting or if he merely had his gun drawn and aimed. Once his gun is out it's a deadly threat, and last I heard Glock didn't install a 'STUN' setting on their firearms.

If you want to shout warnings at badguys carry a bullhorn.

If you want to shoot and stop threats, carry a firearm.

Harry Temple: Alright, pop quiz. Airport, gunman with a hostage. He's using her for cover. He's almost to a plane. You're one hundred feet away.
[Jack doesn't respond]
Harry Temple: Jack?
Jack: Shoot the hostage.
Harry Temple: What?
Jack: Take her out of the equation. Go for the good wound and he can't get to the plane with her. Clear shot.
Harry Temple: You're deeply nuts, you know that? "Shoot the hostage."
[chuckles]
