Point Blank Range, Mooresville - thumbs down

Walked in after seeing the sign on the door, immediately informed I could check my gun or store it in my car. Would have just left if wasn't there because of my buddy, so in disgust I concealed my gun (actually was priceless to see the guys face as I concealed it, as he thought no matter what I would need to disarm). Then proceeded to ask them about the policy and why they value cc over oc. Talk about lousy talking points (mind you, they are all OC)
1. Well with cc there is training
2. Customers aren't used to seeing guns (wtf - in a gun shop, seriously?)
3. All gun stores are like this

I told them that they can make their own policies and was 10 min ago at Gander Mtn which has no issue with OC. They could care less, I said well guess you don't like my money then. Talk about hypocracy at its worst, do you think they would only sell to CHP holders? What a bunch of tools.

Only thing I could think of is you are allowed to exercise the 2nd Amendment as long as its not in here, but please buy your guns and ammo here :-$

I read the sign and walked in because I figured my Glock in the holster is absolutely in a safe condition, but since their fire range wasn't open they were not having any OC at all

Customers aren't used to seeing guns. That comes across as an extremely stupid thing to say in a gun store. In addition, how would your gun be any safer to anyone concealed. A complete lack of logic is what I see. I doubt I'll ever be in your area but if I am I'll steer clear of that place. What a joke.

Does the sign say "no loaded guns"? Or, "no unconcealed handguns" or what? Can't read it on my browser for some reason.

The sign from the picture reads:

Store Policy
Lawfully carried concealed handguns are welcome at Point Blank Range, provided they stay concealed at all times. All other firearms must be unloaded and either in a case or carried openly in a safe condition until you are on the firing line.

Wait. So, where was the conflict? It sounds to me like the OPer was in compliance with the sign.

Uh, oh. Is this maybe a case where the OPer made an assumption about the sign's meaning, and started an argument that didn't need to be started?

You see, had I seen that sign. I woulda just walked in OC (holstered) and conducted my business, browsed the shelves, or whatever. If anybody said anything, I would have been genuinely surprised because I would have known I was in compliance. I'd be perplexed at why there was an issue.

Now, if the sign said, "Unloaded OC with open action only" that would be different.

I think he was irritated that they don't allow the open carry of holstered firearms in their store.

I've only been in one shop that didn't want any loaded guns in the shop. The clerk informed me they post the sign so people who are bringing in guns for service keep them unloaded. They should just reword the sign to say "any firearms entering for service must be unloaded". I've never understood why a gun shop would ban OC/CC. They sell guns for personal safety, but won't allow people the right of personal safety in the shop?

The worst shop I've ever heard of is Handgunners in Burlington. They require everyone to read a sign outside before they buzz you into the shop to browse or shoot at the range. They also have pretty racist policies (although I agree that prohibiting gang looking people from entering is okay).

Forget the buzzer. They require a criminal background history before allowing you to shoot. Are you kidding me?

Thanks. I re-read the text posting of the sign, noticing the part about unloaded. Missed that the first time.

Now I see the trouble.

Yuck. What a mess that store is.

Well, to each his own. I'm sure another store would like the sales.

I see your silly sign, and raise you this one.

I've OC'd in all the stores I frequent with no issues at all. If there was an issue, I would not return.

I had the same reading comprehension issue as I don't really like standing outside the door of stores in the heat reading verbose signs, I simply missed the word 'either', which when taken out of the sentence made me think it was OK to OC. After I was immediately approached to check my gun or remove it from the store and I complied by concealing it, I began to ask about their policy and why they would have such a policy against legal and lawful open carry (esp since they were all wearing pistols on their hips). I plan to follow up with a letter to the owner as us 2A people and those surviving gun stores have enough problems with the Brady Bunch and the anti-2A's, why would anyone with similar beliefs try and alienate a customer base? It's just very bazaar.

My letter to the owner

To the owner of Point Blank Range:

Congratulations on opening your business, I wish I could say that I would support your business, but my first impression of your policies made that impossible and cost you the sale of a firearm that my buddy was going to buy when he saw how I was treated.
I take offense to your policy of no Open Carried handguns in the store. While I see that Concealed Carry is welcome, I find it hard to understand why you would alienate another proven customer base of Open Carriers. Your policy gives credibility to the government that unless a CHP is obtained, the 2nd Amendment isn't really in full force. As a CHP holder, maybe you would think I am OK with that, but I am not and neither are many of the people who are on the OpenCarry.org website (here is a link to the story I put up about my experience in your shop: http://forum.opencarry.org/forums/s...Mooresville-thumbs-down&p=1576278#post1576278)

Perhaps you should follow the lead of Gander Mountain (5 min down the street). Gander Mountain policy is that guns being brought in for service must be unloaded and cased, otherwise legal OC and CC are welcome, and they are much more than a gun store. Would also like to let you know that I had no issue walking into and buying from Dick's Sporting Goods in Birkdale Village or Cold Stone Creamery that day.

Also, not sure if you were present in the store when I was there, but your employees didn't do a good job of handling the inquiry as to store policy. Maybe you can articulate a reasonable justification for the policy and why you feel it necessary to have it?

It's too bad in this climate full of anti-2nd Amendment government policies and advocacy groups, that the stores who make their living off the 2nd Amendment can't recognize it properly. Perhaps if you review your policy and change it, I may like to visit you again.

Best of luck

I have never had a gun shop say anything to me other than "what you got there"?

There is one small shop that takes guns on consignment that has a bright sign in the door that says, "any guns brought in for trade/consignment must be in a case and unloaded" but then below that in bold it says "this does not apply to people who are lawfully carrying for protection". That is perfectly reasonable.

I don't get down to Charlotte, but if I ever do, I will make sure to steer clear.

I find it especially sad that every employee in there was OC. So you are saying, we are good enough to do this, but you are not??

I find it IRONIC that he had the nerve to say the customers weren't used to seeing guns (then why the hell are they in a gun store, DUH).

Sad, sad, sad.

They also need to teach the employees about guns. I asked to see a 9mm and was handed a .40 cal. he didnt know the differences in the Springfield XDs and XDMs nor could he tell the different Glock Generations apart (even though the tags said it)

Oh you want some serious irony? as i was standing at the counter showing the clerk a thing or two, another customer beside me pulls out his LOADED, CONCEALED handgun and shows it off the guys behind the counter. They were passing around a loaded handgun! Thats when I decided it was time to leave

Redfive48,

Thank you for the info. I live just five minutes from PBR and am greatly dissapointed to hear that this is their position on OC. I currently drive 25 miles one way to practice at a friends house in the next county and was hoping to give the fuel money to a local buisness instead of Saudi Arabia. Needless to say I will continue to make that 25 mile drive until the policy changes. Please keep us updated.
