The more I've been on this site the more I have been thinking about open carrying more. I open carry to the range and once to the gas station. I've got a Safariland ALS holster that currently has the paddle attachment on it. Is this an OK setup or do I need to attach the belt loops?

Nothing at all wrong with the paddle. It has advantages in comfort and ease of removal. Wear whatever holster works best for retention and comfort and carry on!

It boils down to personal preference, I like gun belt worn outside the belt loops myself. Just as easy to take off, and it allows me to wear it outside my coat.

I only use the paddle attachment on my Serpa (different holster, but similar concept). It's a bear to get off myself, so I have no worries about someone yanking it out of my pants. I have to un-gear when I get to work every day, so if I were to use the belt attachment, I'd do as WalkingWolf suggests and use an external gun belt.

That said, do what makes you comfortable.

Thanks for the responses! I do prefer the paddle so I will stick with that, just wanted to make sure there were no retention issues.

If you're concerned about it, test it. Preferably using a dummy gun or Airsoft pistol (don't need anyone getting shot accidentally!), have someone try to grab your gun and yank it off. If you don't have a dummy, just wear the empty holster and yank around on it in different directions.

I do this with every holster I wear. Verify that it is empty and have my Sweet Baboo try to remove it makes me feel better about the (rare) gun grab.

Good suggestions! I carry an M&P, I believe there is a replica airsoft gun made. If so, maybe I will use that and put gun grabs into my training.

I have a paddle/belt holster buy safari. It's got 3 screws that hold either the belt clip attachment, or a paddle holster attaxhment. Paddle is excellent, and is my prefer method going to and from work. Keep me from undoing the belt when I get there to disarm.

What's so rare about a gun grab? According to the mentality of the CC only crowd it happens all the time. I use a Blackhawk CQC, with my 5.10 belt, it is a major struggle with those clips to get the holster off without removing my belt.
