Tacoma Dome Gun Show will once again have Sheriff Dickerson on hand to issue Oregon Concealed Handgun Licenses to Washington residents.
Cost is $75 and includes fingerprints and photo. ($65 plus $10 admin fee). This year you won't have to stand in line for hours as the promoter (Wes Knodels) will have a number system and seating available.

Everything you need to get your CHL is linked through the following website. The online training is FREE ... With the Oregon CHL you gain one extra state (Nebraska) over Washington.

Please bring your forms filled out and completed to the show to expedite the process. At a minimum you must complete the application, fingerprints, photo and payment, the remaining items can be emailed/mailed/faxed into the Sheriff's office.

Conditions for Washington State Residents

  1. [*=left]You must have a Washington State Concealed Pistol License to qualify for your Oregon license. Your CPL can be used as one piece of identification when applying for your Oregon CHL.
[*=left]You must write a letter to Sheriff Dickerson stating why you want an Oregon Concealed Handgun License. Your reasons must be compelling in nature. (form letter below)
[*=left]The training requirement can be met by one of several ways: Certificate from a NRA certified handgun class, prior military DD-214, an Oregon CHL class certificate or the Washington DC Metro Police online certification (link below)
[*=left]There will be a $10.00 administrative fee for any fingerprinting of Washington residents by the Sheriff's Office for any purpose. The fee is applied to the cost of regular monitoring of criminal histories of Washington residents holding any type of Columbia County licenses or permits through the Sheriff's Office.
[*=left]We take only cash, checks or money orders (Cost: $75 new / $50 renewal)

All the forms for getting your CHL are on linked below.

Reference Letter: www.co.columbia.or.us/sheriff/images/pdfs/Reference_Letter.pdf
Two references are required to complete the CHL application process. Please use NON-RELATED character references (they do not have to be Oregon residents).

Compelling Reason Form Letter: www.washingtongunrights.com/misc/compelling-need-letter.pdf

Online Washington DC Police Department course WILL BE accepted by the Columbia County Sheriff as acceptable handgun training. It takes about 20 minutes to complete. Be sure to print off the certificate and bring it with you. If you are prior military bring a copy of your DD-214 in place of training.

Washington DC Metro Police Free online training is available here:

Per the Sheriff's Dept...
While we are always cautious about Concealed handgun Training we are even more cautious about online training. Obviously the instructors are qualified. The course outline appears to cover the material necessary. We would be willing to accept this course. At the time of application we will however require the applicant to sign a Declaration of Completion of an Online Handgun Safety Course.

Bill,
I was planning on making an appt. down in Grant County to renew my OR CHL.

If I do the April visit at the Tacoma Dome, do I need to re-do all the paperwork and safety class to renew? Or does my previous OR CHL show that I have already done it in the past?

Clarification would be helpful for me.

Thanks!

Bill

I was in the area last year so just went in to the sheriff's office in St Helens. They couldn't have been more helpful and when there was an issue with my fingerprint scan the clerk offered to meet me there on a Sunday afternoon to redo the scan. This is one properly run law enforcement office. I have my license and carried legally in Oregon last time I was down.

Props to them.

Since you are changing county sheriff offices you will only have to do the renewal process but will pay the full price. No training paperwork but you will need to do the application, references and compelling need letter.
