Some Texans, especially members of the Texas Citizens Defense League, are asking Gov. Rick Perry and the state legislature to allow citizens to carry firearms in plain sight. For some in the Metroplex, it's an insane idea. Many believe it will never come to fruition. On the other hand, many point to the fact that most states do allow open carrying of guns.

I'm a property owner in Tarrant County. I own two handguns, one shotgun and one hunting rifle. Except for hunting, skeet shooting or target practice at a private shooting range, I've never had reason to remove them from locked storage. I would never consider carrying those weapons with me. It's just asking for trouble.

Tarrant County is very diverse. We have a significant number of affluent and educated whites, black and Latinos. We also have more than our share of less-fortunate, less-educated folk across all walks of life. As a metro-area resident who interacts within most of these groups, I'm worried how this petition will affect race relations. I have lots of friends of Mexican descent, most of whom live in southeast Fort Worth, the suburbs and along the old highway to Dallas. They're worried the right to carry firearms openly will inflame relations and tension between area gangs
My friend Raphael was robbed two months ago, early in the morning, while walking home from a bar near the 2800 block of J street in Fort Worth. He thinks he'd be dead if the men who robbed him had guns. Nevertheless, he's now scraping together money to buy a handgun for protection.

Petition proponents were undoubtedly delighted with a Los Angeles Times story (run June 8 in the Star-Telegram) about a family in Provo, Utah, that openly carries firearms. It told the story of Kevin Jensen, who brings his Glock 23 into his bank, restaurants, shopping centers and even Ron Paul political rallies. Most days, he and his wife drop off their 5-year-old daughter at school. They both openly carrying guns. They receive no complaints. This is the type of situation petition proponents desire here in Dallas/Fort Worth. They may get something much different instead.

I've read the TDCL propaganda. I am not buying it. Their members do not see the turbulence they are causing in the community. Their online forums hide behind the fear that the state and federal government won't protect Texans against increasing illegal immigration from Mexico. They'd better be careful what they ask for. This petition will cause more trouble for Dallas/Fort Worth. The TDCL's opening statement is from Winston Churchill, talking about fighting Nazism. It had nothing to do with the right to bear arms.

This petition is not necessary, nor will it be beneficial for anyone in Texas, for the following reasons:

  • It will re-enforce stereotypes about Texans as gun-slinging, Wild West people living in the past.
  • It will inflame already high tensions between black and Latinos in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
  • It will give rise to citizen-applied justice if problems along the border increase and illegal immigration continues to increase.
  • It will, in the end, reduce the rights of citizens to carry arms and to enjoy recreational target practice or hunting activities.

This is a terrible time for me to start thinking about selling my home and moving elsewhere, but, believe me, I'm considering it. I hope and pray Gov. Perry will not allow this petition to see the light of day.

good god I hope I can get my article accepted rebutting this crap.

Yeah and just as with the CHL issue "the streets will flow with blood". I guess the part he does not get is we are talking about LAC not gang members. Go get him DK.

Where on Earth does Stephen Dudley get his "information"? As if I didn't know. This article is a perfect example of the reason I do not watch NBC5. Go get 'em DK.

What on earth is this guy talking about? Gang members are going to be completely freaked out knowing that law abiding citizens are carrying weapons in plain site. And if open carry passes with a version that requires a license, well then what gang member is going to cough up the money and sit through a training class, let alone passing the training class to obtain the license?!?!? Go get 'em is right!

It's sad how many Americans don't really get the 2d Amendment, especially some of our fellow gun owners.Particularly who only own guns for skeet shooting or hunting, like this Stephen Dudley fellow.

I suspect that the majority of the members of the NRA and the Texas State Rifle Association are either hunters or sport shooters (like Jim Zumbo, for example). They're not into EBRs or IPSC, and wouldn't dream of OCing. And this is why, I suspect, we probably won't see much support for OC from the NRA or TSRA. But I'd be willing to be proven wrong/pleasantly surprised.

I posted my opinion in the comments.

"For every one hundred men you send us,
Ten should not even be here.
Eighty are nothing but targets.
Nine of them are real fighters;
We are lucky to have them, they the battle make.
Ah, but the one. One of them is a warrior.
And he will bring the others back."

First of all, you can concealed carry in your car w/o a permit, if you are legally allowed to own a gun, AND NOT A MEMBER OF A GANG. There are already laws against gangsters carrying, and HELLO!!! MURDER IS ILLEGAL. Those kinds of people he's talking about won't carry openly, and wouldn't be more inclined than they already are to kill one another.

To be brutally honest, I can see some positives if they did kill each other.:celebrate

One city has a bunch of thugs, so lets punnish an entire state.
Why not just clean out the gangs in Dallas / Ft Worthless?
I know, how about a law baning criminals within 1000 feet of an OC zone.
It works so well for school zones. That way gangs would have to run away from OC'rs
and if a gang member has a gun, then the other gang couldn't go near him.

See all problems have easy solutions that work:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Looks like that article is down now.

Also, I clicked on the author's profile and it says he lives in Olympia, WA - he doesn't even live in Texas!

Yeah... he's a furniture designer or some such... From Colorado originally. Not a Texan by any stretch. Yep... he knows all about the Border tho...

(I can seeMexico from my front porch)

Colorado Springs is a "diverse" community also. Many of us here routinely OC - and I do mean on a daily basis pretty much everywhere I go- with very few exceptions in which case I CC.

The people I interact withrespond very positively to my being visibly armed - even comforted by the fact I think. If someone is uncomfortable with my being armed for my own protection -that is an issue they are going to have to learn to live with or overcome.

As is always the case,anti-gun loons rant, lie, and attempt to mislead others . The only significant result of "legal" OC in Texas will be an increasinglyLOWER CRIME RATE ! BG's just don't like hanging-out out with armed law-abiding citizens.

Common sense, prudence, and sound judgement must accompany OC wherever it is practiced. It takes some "guts", maturity, knowledge of the laws, and a good measure of human behavior instinct.

I simply cannot fathom the sheeply rationalizations of some folks - who apparently don't pay attention to the daily "news" about violent crime victims.

It'll increase racial tension? doesn't that translate into, "OMG give the blacks and Mexican guns and they'll want to shoot whitey!" Sounds like this guy believes that just because people can see you carrying a gun it's going to start some sort of race war... sounds like this guy is racist to me!

Let me just break down one of this guys paragraphs:

"Tarrant County is very diverse. We have a significant number of affluent and educated whites, black and Latinos.".... Aka I'm not saying that minorities are all stupid.

"We also have more than our share of less-fortunate, less-educated folk across all walks of life. As a metro-area resident who interacts within most of these groups, I'm worried how this petition will affect race relations." Aka The poor minorities are uneducated and not responsible enough to walk around with a gun, and I'm afraid they might start shooting rich white folk like me.

" I have lots of friends of Mexican descent," See... I have minority friends... that must mean I'm not racist!

I could go one, but this guy can cover it up with pretty language and side topics, but what I got out of the article is he's afraid of walking down the street and seeing a black or Hispanic person with a sidearm strapped to their belt.

Why would this person have to move, if Texas passes OC legislation, when he doesn't live in Texas?

Why should he care what Texas does about firearm carry laws in that state, if he doesn't live in Texas?

Why does he and others like him always want to meddle in afares that don't envlove them? Why can't they mind their own friggin business?

And I doubt seriously that he even owns any guns, dispite his claims to the contrary.

Why indeed? He was probably paid to write that article by the Joyce Foundation or some other anti-gun group. I find it interesting that the link to the original article no longer works. Now that I find out that he lives in Olympia Washington, everything he wrote is suspect.

"I have friends of Mexican decent..."

Ok... This guy is trying WAY too hard to be 'PC'...

I have friends that are Mexicans! Many many occasions I have been the 'token white guy'... This guy sounds like he is scared of any 'minority' having a gun! I call BS! Even without the revelation that this guy isn't even a resident...
Remember; Criminals don't follow the laws to begin with and therefore the guns that they use were not gotten legally! Gun laws only restrict the honest much like locks, they only keep honest people honest!
