So I've tried searching and can only find clarification on OC in YNP, but not the rest of the state. I am a resident of WA. My wife and I wish to plan a trip to Cody. Wyoming does not recognize my CPL so I can't CC. But I can't tell if the state law intends that I can't posses at all (ie OC) if I don't have a CPL from a recognized state. I generally OC in WA unless I am too cold or need to CC, and WY laws on prohibited places is similar to WA. But I would like to know if I can OC as a non resident from a state that WY doesn't recognize my CPL from.

Thanks
Puma

Handgunlaw.us: quote:
Non Residents of Wyoming must have a Valid Permit License to Carry that Wyoming honors to carry a concealed handgun in a vehicle. Anyone who can legally own a firearm can carry a loaded handgun anywhere inside a vehicle as long as it is not concealed on your person and is visible. Wyoming law only covers the concealed carry of a defensive firearm in a vehicle.

Open Carry is legal. Places as listed in the “Places Off Limits” above apply to those who open carry. See the “RV/Car Carry Without a Permit” section for carrying in a vehicle.

The state preempts all firearm laws in the state and local authorities can’t have Laws/Ordinances against open carry. Remember that if you enter any property and the owner/responsible person ask you to leave you must leave. Failure to leave can result in Trespass Charges. The Minimum age for Open Carry is 18.

In some states Open Carry is forbidden in places where those with a valid permit/license can carry. This is not the last word on Open Carry in this state. Check at www.opencarry.org...unquote

further, if a regular visitor to WY, get a UT permit, reasonable and 4 hour course! Ck UT BCI website for instructors in the evergreen state?

Across most of Wyoming, nobody is going to stop and search you in any case. But the cities are turning more "liberal" all the time. I'd stay out of Cheyenne, Laramie and Jackson Hole if I were you. Cody is not always gun friendly either. But you are probably not going to have a problem as long as you don't do anything stupid.

Thanks for the input folks. Sometimes the way laws are written it gets confusing. So what do they consider "concealed in a vehicle" or "visible in a vehicle?" If I were to carry in a holster on my hip and don't have it covered while walking down a street, it's visible. But if I get in a vehicle and close the door and the door is on my strong side, then it's really not visible. I know this is nit-picking but the last thing I want to do is wind up in jail while on my trip.

Thanks for the link Grapeshot, but the article is talking about firearms as museum property on display, not patron carry. I guess I'll find out when I get there. Worst case is I end up locking it up in my truck.

I live in Laramie and frequently go to Cheyenne and I OC when weather permits. Yes Laramie is a college town but the liberal attitude has not infected either the city police or sheriffs dept, I have frequently encountered officers from both departments without problem and had pleasant about firearms several times.

Cheyenne is the state capital, but is more like a small town; hell there are only ~ 550,000 people in the 10th largest state and least populous of the contiguous 48 states. There is NO problem OCing in Cheyenne, I do it frequently and never draw a second look. I was in Lowe's
the other day and there was a problem finding an online order, the manager was on the computer, while waiting on the computer he looked up and asked "What-cha carrying" I explained the Para P-14 and he just smiles and said "Sweet. I like it when you guys come in, keeps the bad guys guessing".

I honestly can't think of a place in Wyoming that you would have trouble OCing except buildings in Yellowstone occupied by NPS personnel, I have OCed in the park several times with no problem.

Can anyone comment on the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum in Cody? Does anyone know their policy for patrons carrying?

It has been a couple years since I've been there, but there was a large sign on the door with hours and at the bottom in fairly small print saying "Check visible firearms at security"

Was just gonna say. Had no problems OC around Cody for the most part. Went into the Walgreen's by our hotel and the Dug Up Gun Museum (way cool place) without incident and yes, the Museum of the West (Bill Cody museum) did have the sign about visible firearms. The security desk had lock boxes. I just left my pistol behind because I didn't want the hassle. Much of their firearms displays were missing guns and the basement level for firearms was closed. They're doing a major remodel to reopen in July. The rest of the museum was well worth the money and spending the entire day walking around.
