Alright boys and girls, I have a problem. I haven't gone shooting in several months because I am sick of punching holes in paper at the range. Yes it teaches you lots of skills (if you are ever attacked by a sheet of paper) but it is boring. I tried just going out into the woods, but we've had so many people move into the area that there are houses everywhere. :X

So I thought about my fellow OCDO'ers in North Idaho. Somebody must have a place to go shooting. Then I thought of my family. Then I thought of your family. Why don't we have a Family Fun and Shooting Day? Barbecue, cold pop and lots of ammo! We can all bring rakes and garbagebags to clean up and lots of fun things to shoot. We can get to know each other and share our Open Carry struggles and successes.

I think that it can be done safely, legally and most of all FUN! :celebrate

What say you?

I would be more than interested in having a Family Fun and Shooting Day. Sounds fun. We could probably have a barbeque at the city beach too..... I'll talk with my wife and see if we can set something up. As far as places to shoot, I've been to one up Grouse Creek rd., but that's a bit far and I'd like to find something closer....

Sounds like that would be a whole lotta fun, LMC. Wish you weren't so far north... Me being so far south!

I had quit hunting for many years, simply because it was no longer fun. I had gotten quite good with my rifles, and if the critter was in my sights, it was as good as in the freezer.

So a friend of mine suggested that I hunt with my pistol. I had an old style Vaquero in .44 that I loved to shoot. That intrigued me.

I spent most of the next year and a half practicing long distance shooting, to where I got good enough to hit a notebook sized piece of paper, 6 out of 6 times at 100 yds. At 15o yds., it was 4 out of 6 shots. At 200 yds, it was 3 out of 6 shots. I had always wondered about some of the stuff I've read about guys who hunted like this. Thought it was a bit much....

Well, hitting a paper target of that size at those distances, using nothing but whatever might be there to brace yourself with (think desert or pine forests)... It's a tad more challenging than I had first thought. Fact is, when I first started, 50 yds seemed almost unattainable!

I'll be the first to admit, I'm a rifleman. Brought up with a lever gun in my hand. Shot my first muley at 8. Graduated to bolt guns when I turned 12. The only pistols I ever shot were my service .45 in the Marines. Never shot another pistol until I bought a Ruger P-89DC in '97, for home defense. Bought the Vaquero in '01 and have loved it ever since.

Went Elk hunting in 2005. Didn't get anything, but in 2006, I did get a deer out in the desert. 75 yd. shot. Clean kill. That really convinced me. Went and bought a new model SBH. That's gonna be my hunting gun. Yeah, I reload (couldn't afford all those .44 rounds, if I didn't!), so I have worked up some pretty nice cartridges for deer, elk and bear.

(Can ya tell that I've gotten excited about hunting again?)

I guess the point is that if standard shooting is all you're doing is boring, try something non-standard.
